  1. From the article I learned that 1. Billy Taylor and Frank Wess went to high school together and 2. Taylor gravitated to the piano due to Wess' mastery of the sax. Good read, I just wish I could attend the performance Friday night.
  2. I've been enjoying Grooveadelphia and thanks Jim for the signed copy. To me, it's a little less funky and more lyrical. a direction I like. Good job!
  3. I've seen him a couple of times, the last on his 99 tour with "guitar goddess "Jennifer Batten who really pushed him. I agree his albums are inconsistent but Who Else is overall very good and well recorded. When he's on, he really is a master.
  4. thanks. ordered the Quincy box. At this price, no rush to receive it
  5. and don't omit the Ellington RCA box. I finally removed all the discs and put them in their own individual cases. The book also fell apart.
  6. interesting discussion for this B3 fan. Jim, were you playing the above system when you were at Twins in DC?
  7. SAw Phil and friends last night for the first time and enjoyed it more than I expected. St Stephen>The eleven>Eyes of the World was quite nice. They opened for the Allman Brothers who played an excellent set ex. Mtn Jam>Dazed and Confused>Mtn Jam. Gregg was in great voice and really playing his B3.
  8. I think if you are burning a cd close to its data time limit i.e. 80 minutes or so, the fastest speed may cause an error. I agree that it does also depend on the burner and quality of the blank.
  9. His recordings with the Heath Brothers and many of his solo recordings the last 25-30 years have been dreadfully dull. Again, I think you need to revisit some of these Heath Brother's recordings. I just wish "Live at the Public theater" was available on cd as there is some wonderful ensemble playing on this recording. "Brotherly Love" features a lovely solo from Jimmy on Autumn in New York (available on cd but screams for a proper remastering!).
  10. totally disagree. I've seen him play so many tuneful solos that I can't believe you would make that statement. Dull is word I would NEVER use with this great artist

    Billy Cobham

I liked his work with Larry Coryell on "Live from Bahia" very tasteful and not flashy
  12. any Baltimore-DC dates for the world tour? I need a fix bad.

  14. I like not love this session. As others have noted you gotta love electric piano. Worth it overall though. I've found a video of this band which I'm acquiring.
  15. I will be in NYC next week and spotted this regular gig at Smoke which is convenient to where I will be staying so I thought I'd check with the locals and see if this is worth the $20??
  16. Could anyone point me to a copy of the 88 release?
  17. no problems with my one purchase on audiogon but I exchanged several emails and spoke with the seller before I paypaled from cc. Also worth checking out the sale boards of the various audiophile sites-audioholics, etc.
  18. I have this so please release "hold"
  19. Agreed, one of my favorite Getz recordings period. I just wish the backing group had been better-they get the job done but that's about it.

    Butch Warren

Cool! Is he still doing his Wednesday gig at Columbia Station?
  22. I heard an interview with Larry Coryell recently and he said this cd was a tribute to Jimmy Smith-I liked what I heard and Coryell is a great storyteller. I just wished I could have made it to Blues Alley to see him as it was a celebration of his 65th birthday.
  23. pm sent on THE COMPLETE RCA VICTOR RECORDINGS and Festival-Ellington
  24. I preordered the new Yamaha YAM RXV663BL from J and R for $400 delivered. I've been shopping for a inexpensive HT receiver that had enough new technology to keep it current with current audio and video updates. I hope this will fit the bill.
