Explain the etymological origin of your user name!
PHILLYQ replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My two sisters have called me Philly for at least 30 years(My name is Philip), and Q is my last initial. I don't know the etymological origin of my last name, but it is in the dictionary, and according to those who know me, describes me beautifully! -
The disc is on the pricey side but well worth it IMHO. If you dig any of the guitar work that Pete Cosey did with Miles in the '70s, this disc is a must-have. Laswell(the producer, I believe) lets Cosey strtch out and wail, and he does so to great effect. The combination of Laswell's bass, Drake's drumming and Cosey's space guitar provide a nice rhythmic and aural landscape that allows Sakata to roam about with much alto & chanting. I enjoyed this disc a great, and I was hipped to this disc from someone on the board(can't remember who, but thanks).

My Mosaic purchase and the ensuing guilt
PHILLYQ replied to TheMusicalMarine's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Musiacl Marine, Once these sets go out of print, they usually turn up on Ebay for(sometimes) outrageous prices. One way you could look at this is an investment- it will probably be worth more in a year thann what you paid for it. -
Well, I went to the opening night of Visonfest, and some hits, some misses. The first group on was the Ra-less Arkestra, complete with space costumes. THEY COMPLETELY ROCKED THE JOINT. The music they presented was Saturnian swing, Space jazz, whatever you want to call it, they swung VERY VERY HARD but kept a foot 'outside' at all times. I could also post this as an entry in the WOW thread, as it was a peak performance that transported me to a musical nirvana of 'inside/out' music. Next up was a group that I was very glad to have missed most of their set. It was a collaboration with a bass player, dancer and poet. Maybe somebody liked it, but from my seat it was a colossal bore, the type of failure that is almost guaranteed when one attempts to make 'art' with a capital 'A'. Following was the Khan Jamal quintet with a spoken word performer added. It's too bad the spoken word performer was not subtracted. Jamal's quintet was excellent, but the music was frequently undermined by the repetitive incantations of the spoken word performer. She repeated the same banal lyrics/poetry quite a bit, and hearing it again and again didn't make them any more interesting. She also seemed to have no idea when a player was finished soloing, so she cut in on some nice trumpet and vibes solos. Without her, I think the music was excellent. More later, gotta go now...

I'm not that jaded, but I gave 'Exspensive Shit/He Miss Road' a try, and that is one smokin' disc! Fela has that groove so strong, I wanted some James Brown(15 minute version of 'Make It Funky') right after that, followed by 'Low Rider'. Thank you for recommending the Fela

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
PHILLYQ replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Be extremely careful and don't take the initial diagnosis at face value. My sister-in-law has a son who is now 14. When he was 2 or 3 he was quite a wild child, and some suggested that the kid may have ADHD. He was not evaluated and not diagnosed, and he is now one of the calmest kids you can imagine. I believe that a lot of kids grow out of this without need for medication. If they are suggesting drugs for your son, look at alternative therapies. A lot of school systems don't want to bother with kids who are somewhat rambunctious, so their solution is to drug the kids up so they'll behave. Now it is true that some of those kids do need some help, but I doubt that the number in need of help is quite as great as school authorities would have you believe. I'm sure there's plenty of information on the web, etc. Read up on it and make yourself an expert. -
You know that Jason Kidd was known as ason Kidd, because he's got no 'J'

This is a very interesting and thought-provoking topic. Thanks for bringing it up.I guess I qualify as an almost 'old' person(48 next month), but as a previous poster mentioned, I keep my mind very active and I don't 'feel' old. I started listening seriously to music when I was 10, thanks to two older sisters who loved folk, blues and rock. So I was exposed to lots of good music early on, but that music was contemporary music. Later on, at 16, I discovered Mahavishnu and fusion, which led me onto a voyage of discovery that went back to early(pre-1969)Miles, Keith Jarrett and many other players who were primarily acoustic. By that time, I was totally out of the contemporary loop, listening to music that hardly anyone, then or now, listens to. Sure, some of my friends joked about my radio being broken because it was always on the jazz station, but I felt such a passion for the music because it transported me to places that I had never been to and alleviated a dreary(at that time) existence. I still have that love and passion for music, and it still excites me to no end to hear something new, different, or old that's very well done. I consider myself extraordinarily lucky- I get to listen to music I love, and I don't care if was recorded 50 or 100 years ago- if it's good, it's good. As what Duke said about there's only two kinds of music, etc. As for the future, people who love good music of whatever type and people who love to make good music will always be around. I don't think that that will disappear in jazz, either, so there is a future, however bleak the present economic situation appears. People will always find a way to produce good music, whether that's an almost 'underground' type of activity that hardly anyone subscribes to. It is true that the Music Business is a wreck, peopled now not by music nuts but by suits that are interested in 'product', 'crossover', vidoes and the like. Thanks to things like the internet and its capabilities, artists can now be independent of major music companies, albeit on a much smaller scale. The possibility is there- we just have to now figure out the HOWS to ensure that the music stays alive.

Help ID this young girl (serious post)

Here's a story from the NY Post on the efforts to identify the girl: TOT I.D. BLITZ By MARSHA KRANES -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Email Archives Print Reprint May 20, 2004 -- Photos of little Courtney, the abandoned 31/2-year-old who doesn't remember her last name, are being shown to staffers at all homeless facilities in New York City in a bid to find someone who recognizes the tot and can help reunite her with her family. The adorable toddler, who says she's from Brooklyn and misses her mom, has been in a temporary foster home in Baltimore since May 5 - three days after a man identifying himself as her father left her with a stranger and never returned. The New York City Department of Homeless Services, working with The Post, yesterday said it would begin circulating a picture of the pint-size toddler "to all family facilities in the city in hopes that it can provide helpful information," a spokesman said. The Post had sought the department's help after a reader called to say that Courtney "looks very familiar — she looks like a girl who once lived in a shelter in The Bronx." "I remember her face," said the caller, a former employee of the Jackson Avenue Family Residence in Mott Haven. She noted that shelter residents "regularly move around between sites" and the girl she recalls may have settled in Brooklyn after leaving the Bronx facility. At The Post's behest, the DHS began showing Courtney's photo to staffers at the Bronx shelter late yesterday, and agreed to broaden its effort after no one there recognized the youngster. There are about 150 family shelters in the city, the DHS spokesman said. The department's action delighted officials in Baltimore. "It's wonderful," said Sue Fitzsimmons, spokeswoman for the Baltimore Department of Social Services. "We're thrilled . . . We know if someone who knows her sees her picture, they'll want to help her." The man who identified himself as Courtney's dad left her with a woman in a Baltimore apartment building on May 2, explaining that he had to cash some money orders to pay the rent on an apartment in the building. He told the woman that he and his daughter had been living in an abandoned warehouse. When he failed to return after three days, the woman contacted police and Courtney was turned over to child-welfare officials. Since then, Courtney has been living in a foster home with other children while caseworkers try to track down her family. But the youngster has given them very little information to work with. She has told them her name, her age, and that's she's Puerto Rican and from Brooklyn. But she doesn't know her birthday, or the names of the mother she cries for or the father who abandoned her. And she hasn't mentioned any brothers or sisters or any other relatives. As soon as The Post reported Courtney's plight, readers started calling and e-mailing with offers of help. Several said they wanted either to adopt her or welcome her into their home as a foster child. Joanne Capestro of Brooklyn called to say, "I'm a 9/11 survivor, and I've always felt God left me here for a reason. I wish I could foster-mom her. She's all alone." Several readers sug gested that Courtney may be from another Brooklyn - perhaps the neighborhood known as Brooklyn on Baltimore's border with Glen Burnie, Md. But Baltimore child-welfare workers said Courtney was quite specific when asked where she lived. "She told them, 'Brooklyn, New York,' " said Fitzsimmons. Fitzsimmons said there's a lesson for par ents: "Children need to learn their complete name - not just their nickname - as well as the names of their father and mother." If Courtney had been given that information, she said, "there would be ways to find her in the system." How do you feel about the electric bass in jazz?
PHILLYQ replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I can't recall the exact recording, but I believe Ron Carter has played electric bass on one of his own discs, maybe 'Uptown Conversation'. Sonny Rollins has used electric bass almost exclusively for over 30 years. If it's played well that's all that matters to me. -

First game of the season no-no was Bob Feller, AKA Rapid Robert(This is also a good piece of trivia, as it's the only time in baseball history that a team ended a game with the same batting average as at the start of the game.) July 4th no-no was Dave Righetti in Yankee Stadium against the Bosox, now pitching coach for the Giants(He struck out Wade Boggs to end the game.)

Candidate Cities to host 2012 Olympic Games
PHILLYQ replied to EKE BBB's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Anyplace BUT NYC. I live there, and I don't want 'em. The Olympics that were held in Atlanta wound up costing the city about $1Billion! We have enough budget problems in NYC without spending mass amounts of $ building facilities and providing security for dopers. We have enough dopers here already. -
HAPPY BIRTHDAY,CHUCK!!!!! Keep producing those great discs!
