Thanks alot guys. I just placed this one in my queue over at Yourmusic.com 5.99 is a beautiful thing.

I run off a cable modem and honestly have very little to complain about. I pretty much have the computer on 24/7 most of the time and rarely have to make any adjustments with the modem. I have Road Runner with Time Warner Cable and costs are $45/mo. No reason for me to switch.

I just ordered this one from Concord which is still having there 'blowout' sale. An easy choice based on the positive feedback here.
-
Thanks for great recommendations guys. I especially like the Maggie's Back In Town and Together Again release with Teddy Edwards. I read some online reviews on both and they sound like great ones.
-
Guys, I was just watching an amazing video which featured the likes of JJ Johnson, Sonny Stitt and Howard McGhee. I especially enjoyed his performance. Which leads to me ask, how about throwing out a few recommendations for this poor soul who owns no Howard McGhee. Thanks fellas as always.

I was thinking of driving to the Paramus, New Jersey store on Monday being Columbus Day and a holiday for me and checking things out. Does anyone know if the 30% sale Bertrand mentions, good at all Tower stores? Perhaps a phone call might be warranted before heading out for the 1hr+ drive down.
-
I hear ya Eric. Judging by the responses here, Tower was(is?) just a shadow of it's former self. Still to me, that was awhole heck of alot better than the alternatives I have. Things are pretty pathetic in my neck of the woods.
-
Firstly, I find it sad that Tower looks to be headed towards liquidation. Nothing to me including the internet, replaces the excitement of going through the bins and looking at the many different selections. You see, in my area with very few exceptions, music stores basically stock the same crap. If you're interested in music outside the major releases, forget about it. Slim pickens to say the least. I've always looked forward to traveling to Tower. The place always made me feel like a kid in a candy store. I could easily spend 2 hrs. there. I'm gonna miss that experience. I know some of you guys may feel differently, since many of you live in or close by major cities. Maybe it's not that big of a deal, since you have many more alternatives. I don't really. It's pretty much the internet for me these days. It's just not the same experience.

Paul, All MusicGuide published a classical guide and is available at Amazon or even your local B& N or Borders. Don't own this one, but own there books dedicated to jazz and blues which I find satisfactory. I do own the review book 'Classical Music' The Essential Listening Companion. A pretty comprehensive book. Also available at Amazon. Let me also 2'nd the suggestion to drop by the 'Good Music Guide' classical music forum. I'm a member there, although I rarely post. Some of those people there are incredibly knowledgeable. As far as classical music forums go, it's probably the most active classical forum on the net. Good Music Guide

Was just on the site and had no problems accessing any of the threads. All's good for now.

I live in the Catskills, and never even try such chain stores. But Rhino Records in New Paltz (maybe there's a branch in Poughkeepsie, but I've never been), seems to be run by somewhat of a jazz fan, and occasionally stocks newish RVGs. Once in a while, interesting used discs show up, though their pricing can be off (eg, they tend to charge the "full used price" for old OJCs, even if newer K2s and/or RVGs have been released). But the flip side is the occasional OOP find (eg I got Ike Quebec's "Easy Living" there). They also have a lot of good titles on vinyl, but I can't speak for the prices, not being an LP collector. Not sure if it'd be worth the drive for you, but worth a stop if you happen to be in NP. Thanks! I'm quite familiar with Rhino, and I usually find excellent stuff there. They closed down the Albany Rhino about 10 years ago, and closed the Poughkeepsie location maybe 8 years ago? The New Paltz location is all that's left. It's a shame. One can obtain just about any title on-line these days. Record store shopping offers threadbare stock and fewer and fewer surprises, which is something I miss quite a lot. Where the heck is the New Paltz Rhino store these days? I heard they moved out of the old location after many yrs. to a much smaller store. I wouldn't mind dropping in. It's been a very long time.

Well I saw this on Amazon with a scheduled release date of September 12. Offer me up your thoughts. Thanks. Amazon *Sorry, it might have been more appropriate to have placed this in the Reissues section. My apologies.

The McLean release looks very interesting. Anyone want to comment on this one? Don't know much about the Blakey release either.

I was and still am a huge of fan of there music. In there heyday, they were one ot the best touring bands going. With the death of Moon and Entwhistle a few yrs. back, I can't quite warm up to the idea of these guys trotting out just one more time for old times sake. Mixed emotions at best. I'll be more curious about the upcoming release than say the tour. Any thoughts out there? Should these guys give it up or do you feel it's still a worthwhile venture?

Some of the stuff is pretty funny. The Litttle Richard segment is a hoot. I wonder how many takes it took to get through that one without Richard or the woman featured in the commercial cracking up at least once?

what are you drinking right now?

A protein shake! -
Sorry to come across this news. While I don't own any of his recordings, I clearly remember as a kid, a neighborhood friend who was a trumpeter, being a huge fan of his. When I was over at the house, he could usually be found playing his recordings over and over. R.I.P.
-
Oh gosh, this is great stuff. You can get all 15 of Shostakovich's symphonies for pretty dirt cheap. The performances are highly rated also.
-
I thought they were very funny...did you actually watch them? Sorry, I didn't realise this was going to be a spoof. Great stuff indeed!
-
I'm sorry, but do I really have to watch this? I mean, I still have some sort of standards. Running out of the room...

Thanks for all the great input guys. The reason I mentioned Hargrove in my initial post is that I'm already familar with some of his recordings and consider myself a fan. I don't own the recent recording(Nothing Else), but will keep KH1958's suggestion in mind since I've already heard some good things about this one. I've run across a couple of Dave Douglas albums recently in a local B&N. That might be worth further exploration. Some of the other names mentioned I'm not familar with. I'll keep a list of the many fine suggestions and report back at some point in the future. Cash is alittle tight at the moment but it doesn't cost anything to complile a list for future purchases. Thanks again fellas.
-
Hi guys. When it comes to jazz musicians, I'm pretty much stuck in the past much preferring the old guard musicians. I do own some modern recordings, but that's a very small part of my jazz collection. So let me ask you felllas, starting with jazz trumpeters. Give me some names besides Roy Hargrove that are worth my attention. Specific recordings would be helpful as well. Thanks.

What's the Blues equivalent of the Organissimo Bulletin Board?
Tom 1960 replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Not to get into a debate on politics. But we try to keep a good vibe on the forum and that's why we don't allow political discussions. Blues fans have even lesser outlets to come together and discuss what they love. Appreciate the good words fellas. -

Hey, what the heck give it a shot. We have some pretty serious blues collectors on the forum. I'm sure someone there might show some interest. Good luck to you. -
Yes, and ones that haven't closed have slashed their jazz sections down to microscopic size. Sad. Fortunately, not true for my local Tower on the upper west side of Manhattan near Lincoln Center. It has a huge jazz section downstairs with a big selection. They converted the whole downstairs into jazz, blues, oldies, soul, etc. I spend a lot of time in there. I've got to get my butt down there soon! One wonders how much time is left for Tower? Very sad to read these news reports. Man, this sucks.
