  1. JSngry, to answer your question concerning whether Dell provided a backup disc for McAfee? The answer is no. That's the first thing I looked for after I found that I couldn't load the Zone Alarm program onto the computer. Would they provide me with a new disc? Doubtful. When I spoke to the service rep on the phone yesterday, I made mention of going out and purchasing a replacement disc. No offer was tendered to mail me a new one instead. Jim A., as to what exactly I need? Well, Microsoft Vista does have a firewall program and that currently operating. Is that satisfactory enough? You guys may know better than I? As for a anti-virus program that's something I should take care of although RoadRunner does support some sort of anti-virus program. So I'm not completely naked out there. AVG is a product a friend has mentioned to me also and that may be an option? At this point in time, I'm real reluctant to further screw around with this system. When it comes to computers, my knowledge is very limited. I may get my friend from work over here next week, who knows his shit and have him guide my through this. I really appreciate the input here guys and please continue to offer your thoughts if you like? Right now everything is running great and the temptation to mess with things is low. This past week has been very frustrating. I just want to spend alittle time online without getting pissed off.
  2. Speaking of Brahms Piano Concerto's, #2 with Richter and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is a fine one. Great sonics.
  3. Well certainly no expert here, but one of my favorite concertos is Dvorak's Cello Concerto. A real keeper is this performance featuring the late Mstislav Rostropovich and the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan.
  4. To update you fellas. I took Chuck's advice last night and hit "System Restore" back to May 6'th, the original date I had the new computer connected. It supposedly reloaded the McAfee program and that's caused unfortunately, a whole host of problems which I'm certain Chuck had no intention of causing. When I would boot the computer, shortly after the blue screen would appear with the icons on both the large screen and the bottom of the page, the screen would suddenly go white stating I could not connect to the internet. In both the upper left hand side of the screen and bottom rectangular box appeared, "Toolbar EULA". Whatever the heck that means! This would render all programs inoperable except for shutting down the machine. Nothing would work! I tried numerous times rebooting only to get this white screen with the same Toolbar EULA. I even disconnected from the internet, same result. I got Dell support on the phone and after a lengthy conversation, we placed the place the computer under "Safe Mode" and then hit "System Restore". Everything has returned to "normal" except the McAfee program has disappeared again. As for Zone Alarm, I didn't realise when I made the initial purchase that it wasn't compatible with Windows Vista. It ran great on the old computer running XP. I guess to save myself any further grief, I'll go out and purchase the McAfee program. Too many problems in such a short time, I don't need it.
  5. I recently purchased a new firewall/anti-virus/spyware program called Zone Alarm based on a friends recommendation. I was running off Norton previously. My friend told me to toss Norton since it's slows the computer down quite abit. I downloaded the program initially as a 15 day free trial. Cool, it worked great. I then purchased the program outright. In the meantime, my old computer was having serious issues with speed and it became obvious it was time to get a new computer. Ok, I've got a brand new one now and want to install the Zone Alarm program from the backup disc. No dice says my new computer. It states it's not compatable with the Windows Vista OS. Crap!!! I wish I had known this before I deleted the Macafee program which was already pre-installed on the computer. Question. Does anyone else here run off this program and care to offer some ideas or solutions? Frankly, I'm pretty pissed at this point and am thinking of getting my money back. Oh yeah, the telephone support system costs $3/ minute. Let me also add, I had the Windows firewall program shut down temporarily to see if this would change things. Again, no dice.
  6. I think that might be the recording? I was taking care of some work here in the house and heard this coming over the stereo. These guys were really swinging and wooping it up good!
  7. I've been really digging the vibes sound of Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson recently and after just listening to a track off XM called "Flying Home" by Lionel Hampton which in fact really cooked. I am now asking for some recommendations as a good starting point. Thanks guys.
  8. Mike, this is local charity event and not related to the Mass. race. Since I've gotten back into riding I've been aware of this event but have passed on it since the local Juvenille Diabetes walk is scheduled on the same day and I can usually be found there. This year I might just donate some money to the walk and ride in the other event. As for your nephew, that's a heck of a ride. Good luck to him! Tony, I'll keep in touch on my progress and let you know if I participate. Thanks for the encouragement my friend.
  9. I hear you guys on being adverse to dealing with the traffic. I kind of feel the same way myself, mainly confining my riding to less traveled roads. On occasion I'll ride the bike into work on Saturday's for the main reason that there's a heck of alot less traffic on the roads compared to weekdays. I will ride trails on occasion, but after getting a taste last year what it's like to road ride, I pretty much ride exclusively on the roadways. My bike is what you call a hybrid, good on trails and highways. It's a TREK and I'm pretty happy with it. Maybe in the future I'll invest in a good road bike, but I'm cool for now. TD and Tony, you guys are the hardcores and I have immense respect for what you're able to accomplish. The miles you guys log on a regular basis is serious stuff. A goal I have set for myself is to get a 50 mile ride in before the cold returns here in late October. They have a cancer charity ride in the fall where participants can ride something like 10, 25 and 50 miles. I'd like to give that a shot. But I'll have to gauge my progress this season and then make a decision. So far, I feel real strong this year and that gives me hope. Tony, coffee stops are cool! I'm what you call a coffee fanatic. That's probably for another thread.
  10. Something I've gotten more into the past few years is road biking as opposed to mountain biking. I try to ride twice a week and ride at least 25 miles on most Sundays. It's something I never thought I would seriously get into. I don't ride more often since I already spend 4 days/week working out at the local gym with the weights. I've been involved with weight training for the past 20 years and that's something I'll never give up on. What I really enjoy about riding though is the adrenline rush I get out of it. I'll tell you, after a good ride it will put me in good spirits for hours. Something I've never gotten for the most part out of weight training. I started riding almost 3 years ago. It was very humbling at first, thinking with my job which requires me to walk on the mail route everyday, I figured I was pretty fit all around. Guess again! It was real tough at first when just riding a few miles was a real effort. Cardio wise I thought I was a wuss. But over time and with alot of patience and alot of off season training in the gym, I think I'm beginning to make some serious progress. Now when I ride, I can basically go the entire time without stopping for a break and I'm not fatigued by rides end. This year I decided to get the clothing and at least look like I'm serious, even though I realise I could never seriously compete with the hardcores I see out on the road. Well enough from me. Anyone else out here bike? How often do you ride and how many miles do you travel? What kind of bike do you ride? I'm curious to see if there are other enthusiasts here also?
  11. Great story KEYS, thanks for sharing!
  12. Sad to say I have only one recording of his music, the album "Point Of Departure". I guess that will change in the upcoming months. R.I.P.
  13. I hear you brother! I have the Mobley and Turrentine sets on my radar screen along with a few of the Selects. I'd even be interesting in splurging on the OOP Blue Mitchell since I read it's available on EBAY at a reasonable price. Whatever that means?

    Junior Cook

Thanks to all for the many great recommendations. At the very least I'll purchase "Junior's Cookin' ". I'm definitely interested in purchasing "Cup Bearers" w/Blue Mitchell since I'm a big fan of his. The Steeplechase recordings look interesting also. Brownie, you're killing me! You saw Silver, Mitchell, Cook and Hayes back in '59? Damn, that must have been one hell of a show!

    Junior Cook

I'm really coming to appreciate Junior Cook's playing after recently purchasing Horace Silver's "Blowin' The Blues Away" and "Finger Poppin'". So what I'm asking at this point, what further sessions featuring Junior should I also be made aware of? I should also add I already own "Song For My Father". Thanks as always.
  16. Well since the response for "Soul Street" may be lukewarm at best, any thoughts from others on "Soul Battle" as a better alternative?
  17. Tom. I've got Nothing Serious in my queue. What do you think of it? Sorry GA for taking so long to respond. I really enjoy "Nothing Serious". There's some pretty strong playing here from Roy. Slide Hampton plays on 3 of the 8 tracks. Roy has a pretty good band backing him. I know nothing of Ronnie Matthews on piano, but he's quite good. I think you'll enjoy this? Good stuff.
  18. Personnel: Jimmy Forrest (tenor saxophone); Oliver Nelson (conductor, tenor saxophone); Jerome Richardson (alto saxophone, flute); King Curtis (tenor saxophone); Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); Art Farmer, Idrees Sulieman (trumpet); George "Buster" Cooper (trombone); Gene Casey, Hugh Lawson, Ray Bryant (piano); Calvin Newborn, Tiny Grimes (guitar); George Duvivier, Tommy Potter, Wendell Marshall (bass); Roy Haynes, Clarence Johnston, Osie Johnson (drums); Ray Barretto (congas). Oliver Nelson Big Band includes: George Barrow, Seldon Powell (tenor saxophone); Ernie Royal (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland (trombone); Chris Woods (piano); Mundell Lowe (guitar); Richard Davis (bass); Ed Shaughnessy (drums). I recently purchased the Oliver Nelson recording "Afro/American Sketches" and I thought this might also be an interesting session? Your thoughts please!
  19. I'm enjoying the many great responses on this thread. I just recently purchased "Red Garland's Piano" and already own "Groovy" and look forward to seriously beefing up on his catalogue. Alot of the OJC stuff look to be no lose propositions.
  20. I just received Roy Hargrove's "Nothing Serious" in the mail today. So for next month I'm looking at: I've read some positive stuff about this release right here on the forum. I figured it might be a nice pickup.
  21. Since I made a large number of purchases very recently, I still wanted to take advantage of the sale and make use of the $10 off coupon. I placed the order in the past hour and already received an email confirmation. Total $26.62 includes shipping. Titles purchased: Horace Silver - Finger Poppin' Grant Green - I Want To Hold You Hand Blue Mitchell - The Thing To Do Clifford Jordan/John Gilmore - Blowing In From Chicago
  22. I just purchased a number of recordings very recently and while I'm just beginning to go through the stash, this may likely be my favorite of the bunch after it's all said and done. I already own a few Nelson cds. The obvious Blues and the Abstract Truth and More Blues... plus Screamin' The Blues. I've read some great things about the Mosaic set, but that's just not affordable at the moment. I decided a much cheaper alternative would to purchase Afro/American Sketches. Man, this does not disappoint. I usually leave the house early mornings(5:30AM) to head off to the gym and on most occasions usually opt to drive with the radio or cd player off. Yesterday I decided to bring along the Oliver Nelson album. Talk about walking up from a semi coma. By the time I arrived at the gym I was wide awake and couldn't wait to get back into the car to listen to the rest of the album. Anyone else here really enjoy this album and mind adding a few thoughts also? I know I can't be alone on this one.
  23. I have a friend who just purchased about $100 worth of cds at Newbury Comics for me, then I come across this thread. The very scarey thing is now I want to take advantage of this sale. Need help, seek help.....

    Benny Golson

Thanks Larry for the input. In fact I already own Farmer's Modern Art and didn't realise he played on the session, embarrassed to say. I'm playing this right now.

    Benny Golson

I just finished listening to Benny Golson's Groovin' With Golson. A really, really nice album with fine work from trombonist Curtis Fuller. Benny is definitely someone I want to delve into deeper. I realise the Mosaic set is available, but for now the cost is prohibitive. I'd rather for the time being, focus on some of his other sessions. I understand he recorded some other dates with Fuller in the late 50's. Something I'm very interested in hearing your thoughts on. Have at it and thanks as always.
