  1. I just wanted to quickly chime in how impressed I'm with Tubby Hayes on the Dizzy Reece select which arrived earlier today. Tubby is a name I've heard of, but knew absolutely nothing about till now. I'll definitely make use of some of the suggestions here. Sorry to revive a long dormant thread. Just wanted to add my 2 cents.
  2. Disc 1 Hot damn! This arrived today and I'm very excited. All the hype that been heaped on this set, lives up to the billing. Thanks to all who recommended this set.
  3. A lengthy article from PC World brings up some valid points: It's Official: XM and Sirius Are Merging So the New York Post's report is true: The Coke and Pepsi of satellite radio, XM and Sirius, have announced that they're merging. As you'd expect, the official press release says that this is fantastic news for customers--with benefits ranging from better programming to cheaper and better devices. (It also reports that the $13 billon deal is a "merger of equals," with XM's Gary Parsons serving as chairman of the combined company and Sirius's Mel Karmazin serving as CEO.) My impulse, however--thinking here as the reasonably happy XM subscriber that I am--is to be bummed out at this news. Change is always tough. And until I'm convinced that the change is for the better for those of us who are already satellite radio fans--and who chose XM over Sirius, or vice versa--I'm going to be a tad paranoid. The release says that the combined company will offer broader programming. And I'm guessing that the big marquee names of both services would survive. XMSirius (or whatever it ends up being called--I'm guessing that the XM name would eventually prevail, but I could be wrong) would presumably keep both XM's Major League Baseball (a huge plus for me) and Sirius's Howard Stern (which I'm living happily without, but your mileage may vary). But there'd have to be some downsizing of programming, given the massive overlap between the two services. A combined company isn't going to preserve two 1960s pop stations. It's probably not going to keep both XM Public Radio (a homegrown channel with NPR castoff Bob Edwards) and Sirius's NPR channels. Worthy niche channels--like XM's old-time radio station--might or might not make the cut. In other words, I fear major cutbacks--maybe in part because I'm still ticked off that XM stopped carrying an audio feed for MSNBC a few months back. With both companies pouring millions into ambitious programming, the competition between 'em has been swell for anyone who's a customer of either service. I fret that XMSirius, which would have a monopoly on satellite radio, would get fat and lazy--in part because even a less ambitious unified satellite service would be so much better than most terrestrial radio. One interesting tidbit in the release: It speaks of the merged outfit "offering consumers the ability to pick and choose the channels and content they want on a more a la carte basis." What that means isn't entirely clear. But if it involves being able to opt out of paying for the several dozen stations I'm never going to listen to, it could be intriguing. (Wild guess, though: A customer who only listens to 20% of the new company's stations isn't going to save 80% of his or her current monthly subscription fee.) Then there's the hardware question. Will all existing XM and Sirius devices--including all those receivers built into cars--work forever? If there's some period during which the services aren't completely merged, will new devices have to support both flavors of satellite radio? Is the combined company going to keep all of XM and Sirius's pricey satellites? I don't know enough about the technicalities of satellite communications to even hazard guesses here. (XM, by the way, has usually been ahead of Sirius when it comes to the coolest hardware--so much so that I'm not worrying that a merger will be bad for the quality of satellite radio gadgets. I'm just assuming that future devices will draw more from the XM side of things than the Sirius one.) It's possible to be an optimist here. Not having to choose between two sets of programming could have its upsides. (If you're a baseball fan who also likes Howard Stern, you've had to make a tough choice until now.) And both companies have had somewhat shaky business models until now; one financially healthy provider might be a better scenario for consumers than two that are bleeding cash. (The story is that a merger would save the combined company $7 billion a year.) Here's the biggest reason I'm not completely panicky, though: In the long run, both XM and Sirius's biggest competition isn't each other. It's iPods and YouTube and TiVo and HD radio and MySpace and HDTV and Wii and PSP, basically, anything you might do to entertain yourself rather than listening to satellite radio. Which means that even a unified service would have plenty of incentive to offer folks lots and lots of reasons to sign up and keep paying that monthly service fee. Assuming that the merger doesn't face any insurmountable legislative hurdles, we'll see how this all sorts out. One of my coworkers, upon hearing the rumors of a merger of satellite giants, cleverly said that it could turn out to be "a marriage made in heaven." Let's hope so....
  4. I bought it today and it should be in my hands by early next week. I'm really looking forward to hearing this!
  5. We got about a foot of snow. Much better than the forecasts were calling for. While it's sunny here right now, the wind chills the next several days will make it feel like it's in the single digits, 15 below wind chills at night. Brrrr...
  6. We're expected to get pounded starting shortly and lasting well into tomorrow. The forecast calls for at least a foot and a half of snow. I'm really afraid to get an update. It keeps getting worse. That said, we've been pretty spoiled here. Here it is the middle of February and this is the first snowstorm of the season. Get me through the rest of the month and I don't care what March brings. It wont last.
  7. Donald Fagen, The Nightfly! Good god I have that cassette probably lying around here somewhere, but not a clue where to start. GA, you're going to make me search for that one. I remember the great cover he does of Dion's "Ruby Baby". If I find it, I'll let you know? Too funny...
  8. That's screwed up. I feel sorry for the kid.
  9. Thanks Guy for mentioning this one. I just threw this on a short time ago. The songs are on the short side, but the playing is very good. Some bluesy playing which I really enjoy. A nice groove going on here. There is certainly alot to listen to with 17 tracks.
  10. I've been very fortunate to had taken this week off from work and avoided pretty much the cold temps outside. The brief periods I have been outside can only by described as bone chilling. On the upside, we've had very little snow so far this winter. That's a plus in my book, since snow and ice in my line of work(mailman) makes things a heck of alot more difficult. I'll take cold temps over snow and ice any day.
  11. Good luck on the upcoming album, Jim. If the last album is any indication, I'll be purchasing this one also. You guys have got to get to NY State one day.
  12. This Mosaic has lived up to all the hype and I'm truely grateful for those who told me to take the plunge. Right now disc 4 & 5 with help from Booker Ervin, Grant Green and Johnny Coles.
  13. I had this book in my hands yesterday at a local brick and mortar, but hesitated to make the purchase pending what the vibe here was on the book. Looks like I'll make a return visit tonight and hopefully it's still there.
  14. Disc #3 I'm really enjoying this set. The 3'rd disc features excellent playing by both Stanley and Tommy Turrentine. Tommy is someone I've mentioned in another thread on this board whom I'm really getting into. To have him on this set is just icing on the cake. On the track 'Rastus', Tommy really shines. Also the fact that I have little of Stanley playing in my collection has served as a good intro to his music.
  15. 'Treasures' sounds like a serious endorsement. I'm trying to behave for now since I've made quite a number of purchases recently. It's just after reading all your glowing endorsements, you make it really difficult to for me to sit on the sidelines. Well, I'll do my best to resist the temptation for now, but will keep this high on the list for my next round of purchases. Continue to add your thoughts if you like and again thanks.
  16. Has anyone else purchased this recently and wish to add there thoughts? I'm thinking about it, but after purchasing the Parlan Mosaic, it will be awhile.
  17. Just wanted to say thanks fellas, for recommending this one. Beautifully packaged. It'll take some time to get through the entire collection, but so far this is really nice stuff. Listening to the trio sessions right now.
  18. No upgrades here. Presently, I'm just trying to fill the gaps in my collection and yourmusic gives me great opportunities to do so. Of all the artists mentioned, only Duke Pearson doesn't have a place in my collection. Maybe that helps?
  19. Ok, let me have alittle fun here. Of the 10 selections in my queue at present, including the above mentioned what would you choose as your next selection? Art Blakey Indestructible (Remastered) Miles Davis Filles De Kilimanjaro (Remastered) Roy Hargrove Nothing Serious Horace Silver Horace Silver And The Jazz Messengers (Remastered) Duke Pearson Sweet Honey Bee Lee Morgan Tom Cat (Remastered) Max Roach Jazz In 3/4 Time Ben Webster & Oscar Peterson Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson (Remastered)
  20. No coincidence, MG. I know where to come when I'm looking for great recommendations and this forum doesn't disappoint. You guys convinced me enough to go ahead and make the purchase tonight. I should have it in my hands in the next few days. I'm really looking forward to hearing this excellent set. Hopefully this will spur my friend Ron S into making a purchase himself.
  21. 6.99 here as well. As I stated in a previous thread, I ordered 3 Arthur Rubinstein discs about a month ago. The week prior to Christmas, I received the order obviously opened with only 1 disc intact. Since I work for the post office I immediately returned the discs with an explanation and to reship the order. Still nothing. I emailed them last night and have yet to receive a response. Hopefully we can get this resolved soon! Interesting enough, two subsequent purchases have been thoroughly taped. Maybe these guys have been getting an earfull of complaints about missing discs? In the meantime, lined up in my queue for next month is Tina Brooks' "True Blue". I have been thinking of exchanging it with Sonny Rollins' "The Bridge". Any thoughts here?
  22. I was given the headsup on this set since I don't already own any of Horace's releases. Having gone through and read the positive responses on this issue, I might just purchase this before the weekends out. It helps I'm working overtime tomorrow.
  23. Thanks for the swift replies guys. I'll definitely look out for the self titled release. I'm not sure I can go along the Mosaic route, but your input is appreciated just the same. I'm probably more inclined to look up his session work as was recommended. Fickle Sonance? Duh, I already own that one! Sometimes I don't have a clue what I own.
  24. I've been listening to Sonny Clark's 'Leapin' and Lopin' which features the fine trumpet work of Tommy Turrentine. I was wondering seeing he didn't lead too many sessions, are they other recordings where he's featured? I'd love to hear more of his stuff but have know idea where to look. Any help would be appreciated.
  25. As I said in another thread I made 3 purchases before the price increase. Bobby Hutcherson - Happenings Donald Byrd - Off To The Races Freddie Hubbard - Here To Stay I'm still waiting on the 3 Arthur Rubinstein discs which were apperently opened(2 of 3 discs missing) when they arrived at the local post office I work at. I sent the order back before Christmas, but nothing yet.
