OOP Hat Art and many other discs on eBay
AmirBagachelles replied to jon abbey's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Echoing an earlier rant by another unreasonable person, I don't recognize many of these as having been offered here on the Board for ridiculously low prices before listing at Ebay for ridiculously high prices, which appear to be going higher in some cases. Shame on you Jon, bad manners. Let's hope for some occasional Buy It Now opportunities for mere mortals. Regardless, I'll be taking a shot at a few Hats I'm sure. Mo' better Braxton, please. -
Musicians With Smallest Recording

Marion Brown -
good thread here, thanks. I dig the Tom Prehn Quartet disc. I see they have issued more from the Danish scene. I always want to try another after I spend time with the UMS titles. I would be curious if Corbett has tried to access and license anything from the vaults of the big conglomerates. Digging the Luther Thomas' Funky Donkey wild ride in low/mid fidelity. Subsequent Banana is also fun but scarred beyond belief by "vocalist" Carol Marshall. Big minus.

Two of my treasured OOP hats - Carter-Bradford Comin' On, and Jimmy Lyons' Jump Up, are skipping out, each at particular moments (error is replicable). The Carter-Bradford seems to have a razor-edge width straight 3/8" scratch, or fault in the clear laminate, at the outer edge of the disc, thus last track won't play thru near the end. The Lyons, no visible faults, nothing, in fact I just recently bought it sealed. These discs are 12 yrs old or more, has anybody had similar problems with HatHut discs, as I have many discs, similar vintage, with visible wear and tear, all play fine, in car and discman too. In the case of Comin' On, can a disc be "polished" back to health with a fine emery cloth for example? Hat is maddening enough with the scarcity of their back catalog, recently I bought Ortega's New Dance in the cardboard sleeve, scratched the disc simply by removing it from that crummy pocket because there was a few grains of dirt or something inside behind the disc. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks, Dan

I laughed too when I saw that comment about being on the top the longest. A world without sniping would be like a world without two-out come from behind victories in the bottom of the ninth. If you're crying about sniping, you've probably got some other issues to tend to.

I am going to burn to CD the two FDs and Secrets, its a small crime that these are not easily available (to put it mildly) to jazz listeners.
-
I picked up New Dance on my way home, I've been thrilling to it for the past hour. Wow, what a talent! Chuck, West Coast Hot only includes the entirety of Flight for Four, nothing from Self Determination Music. I think. I'll be trying out some more Ortega, thanks everyone.

Is it true she was orphaned at a young age and raised by Munchkins?

Awhile back, Michael Cuscuna said he might look into a set covering the four John Carter - Bobby Bradford group records (two on Revelation, two on Flying Dutchman). I finally got to hold Secrets in my hands this week, really nice vinyl, and a nice textured cover, I can't wait to spin it this weekend. This LP looks like it came from an impressive, caring label - Revelation. Can anybody bring us up to speed on who was behind it, what happened to it? Thanks!

Does anybody know why the Jimmy Lyons title never made to CD? Is his estate in good control of his material? I think Lyons and Cecil Taylor might be my favorite new artistic-taste experience since I got back into jazz listening in '99 with the help of Miles and Mingus.
-
Thanks everyone, yes Clem I had wondered about the Pete Brown. I give five of those 8 Sony UK jazz titles from '99 absolute rave reviews - both Howard Rileys, both Ray Russells, and the Ricotti. (Had to scrounge Norman's, Downtown MG, and the web for these, tough!) The Ronnie Scott is actually terrific (straight ahead) too. The Oxleys kind of suck, too much microtonal bug music; I consider myself tolerant but I think Derek Bailey stinks, no ability to entertain me or swing.
-
No question - the music industry, and popular taste's indifference to jazz is a reflection of many forms of depravity. It is a bummer.

I've been enjoying Frank Ricotti's excellent Our Point of View from about 1970, especially fond of guitarist Chris Spedding's tasty high energy. I got to looking up Spedding, I see he is on a few of Jack Bruce's records from about that time. Can anybody vouch for Harmony Row, or Songs for a Tailor? These look like no-brainers, too good to be true from googling etc. Thanks

Art Pepper Opinions Needed
AmirBagachelles replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Get the Contemporary titles. (Amazing audio documents as well.) And I love The Trip as well. And read his book. He is definitely one of the all-timers. I don't know the live comeback recordings, but I look forward to that someday when I have the time and money. I am sure it is astounding as well. High consistency is one of his legacies. -
I saw a hypnotic Tsizji set at Tonic last summer (warmed up for Zorn). My friends and I really enjoyed the intensity of the experience, went well with a shot of tequila. I don't know any of his records though.

I have not heard Pictures of Lily, Squeeze Box, or Acid Queen used yet. But there is still time.

I stopped watching at 76-63, I just can't believe it. What a choke, that's all that was. I had 11 of the sweet 16. I like Louisville and Illinois, those were the only two I had a strong feeling for going in, though I still have UNC in the F4 too. I had a F4 first round vic in Kansas. I picked Illinois to win but Louisville looks the best in these games, my how badly they would have beaten WVU without the Mountaineers' unconscious shooting in the first half. Unreal. The Cards slowed that game down until WVU cooled, then it was just a matter of time.

What cd/Lp have you played the most often?
AmirBagachelles replied to medjuck's topic in Recommendations
Rock: Live Dead or Who's Next, not sure Jazz: The Magnificent Thad Jones Comedy: That's Not Funny, That's Sick -
I especially like the Verve Vault logo done up nice with the words "Out of Print" underneath. (As if to be proud of that.) How much did they spend on that graphic design? They have the analog source and digital WAV masterings and you and I get cheesy MP3. No thanks.

I am quite sure the worst movie I ever paid to see was Silver Bears with Michael Caine. Boring. Incomprehensible. Not funny. But I could be wrong.

Yelling "Freebird" at Concerts
AmirBagachelles replied to Randy Twizzle's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It does hurt to see Whipping Post and Freebird mentioned in the same article. The former is most certainly not a cliche, it's an out-of-mind experience (at least it is on the Fillmore album). And not to pine too completely nostalgic, but we do indeed need Phish to come back in a BIG way, to do the all-Freebird show, both sets. -
George Russell - Complete RCA Recordings
AmirBagachelles replied to Fer Urbina's topic in Discography
Don't rip off jazz musicians. Don't buy Lonehill product nor any other illegitimate goods stolen from the toil and intellectual property of others. Really. This is a rather obvious good-conduct reminder. -
I would like to say thanks Kevin. The only way the list of prospects could be improved for me would be to continue with the reissuance of the very strong, underappreciated Sam Rivers catalog. Thanks!
