  1. Stuff in the pipeline (with many thanks to the folks here for highlighting some of these): "Johhny Griffin Sextet" Wilbur Ware -- "Chicago Sound" Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis, Johnny Griffin -- "Live at Minton's" Red Garland Quintet -- "Soul Junction" Prestige All Stars -- "Earthy"
  2. A wonderful set. As has been mentioned, this collection presents the music in such beautifully clear sound. I probably regard this one and the Ellington 1936-1940 Small Group Sessions as my most-prized Mosaics. The Bechet-Spanier tracks here are indeed gems.
  3. Ortiz and Manny. They both look bad on this one -- Manny because he implied his positive test this year was his first transgression; Ortiz because he took such a hard line this spring against other players who flunk tests. Having said that, the devil's in the details, and until it is confirmed that they are both actually on the list, and until it's known what they tested positive for, I'm withholding judgment.
  4. How about this little beauty? The stereo egg chair: I remember thinking when I was a kid that these things were the coolest thing ever invented. (Never mind that I'd not actually experienced one). They don't look all that comfortable now. Only $1,600 plus shipping. And this junior model looks like that character on South Park who gets offed every episode:
  5. The Edison Talking Doll, touted as the " first phonograph marketed for home entertainment, with a pre-recorded cylinder." Problem was, as soon as the child dropped the doll, the wax cylinders would shatter. Never took off, but a milestone in early recorded music. The first "failed" audio product? The creepiness factor may have also had something to do with its failure. Even more creepy!
  6. thanks
  7. Your link doesn't work; I am aware of malware being installed from sites offering the alleged Erin Andrews video; I don't think anything happened in the short time I had no virus protection but I did find the Erin Andrews video without causing any harm (on Rapidshare, no "video player update" required). The comment was in the politics forum, which might tell you something about the state of affairs in the politics forum. ... but, I use a macbook and just go with whatever security updates they provide periodically. Have since I've had it -- going on five years or so. Never had any issues. But I don't install any apps, plugins, add-ons, viewers, media players, or whatever in order to view or listen to site-specific content. I avoid that stuff like the plague. Particularly when it comes to peeping on naked ESPN reporters.
  8. Is The Garland Quintet's "All Mornin' Long" in this mix as well?
  9. Didn't make it to Vinyl Fever yesterday. Hope to get back up to Tampa next week. Sound Exchange had an OK selection of jazz CDs -- comparable in size to what my local B&N used to stock, but not as good a selection of stuff, which I guess you'd have to expect in a store that carries mostly used CDs. Didn't get to look through the vinyl, which there seemed to be a similar quantity of, because I was pressed for time (and I don't have a turntable). I did manage to snag a couple of rvg's for a pretty good price -- Johnny Coles' "Little Johnny C" and Johnny Griffin's "A Blowin' Session" with Mobley and Coltrane, plus Monk's "Misterioso" (More Griffin). Got out of there for around $17. All in all, probably worth checking out if you have a 45 minutes to kill, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to stop by. The store was reasonably busy though.
  10. I'd appreciate a report, James. I have friends in Tampa and I'm sure I'll be visiting sooner or later so I'd be interested to know if this is one I should keep in mind. You might also try Vinyl Fever. When I was there last the new jazz section was decently stocked, used CDs was OK, used vinyl was pretty skimpy. But the new CD section was worth a look for sure, and if you are in Tampa already .... Thanks for the heads-up Dan. I think I'll stop by Vinyl Fever first and back-track to Sound Exchange. I'll let you know what I find.
  11. Not to in any way excuse what he did, because like most folks, I find it revolting in the extreme, but what's being left unspoken here is that dog fighting is part of a sub-culture that is not just accepted in certain segments of society, but also a sub-culture that is spread much wider than people are often willing to acknowledge. Cock fighting is the same damn thing. Bull fighting as well. Dog racing is not that different, except that it's mostly white guys. Greyhounds that don't perform at the track do not meet a happy fate. And those greyhounds are some of the sweetest dogs you'll ever see. Put rodeo on the same list -- maybe a notch lower because they don't actually kill the animals (as far as I know), they just repeatedly abuse and torture them by tying their balls in a knot and jamming an electric prod into them. Yee-fuckin-haw. ... But it's OK because it's part of our cowboy heritage. Lets put it on ESPN! /rant
  12. As the postman refuses to deliver the past 5 - 6 orders I have in the pipeline, I'm going to shoot up to Tampa to visit this place today. I talked to a guy on the phone there the other day who said they have a decent jazz section. They pay between 50 cents and $5 for CDs that are brought in for exchange, so I think I'll skip that part of the experience. It's in a pretty seedy part of town.
  13. How about MetaDada?
  14. Conditionally reinstated. He can play in a couple of pre-season games. Commish will consider full reinstatement by Week 6
  15. If he was ... something (smart, sincere, remorseful) ... he'd accept the four-game suspension graciously and use the time to volunteer at an animal shelter -- if he could find one that would take him, and I'm pretty sure he could. This argument made by TO that other players have done worse things and haven't been suspended is on par with a 3-year-old's "but Johnny did it, too" plea. And really, short of abusing and killing human beings, what is worse than what Vick did? He's probably being advised by his lawyers to keep his mouth shut for now (at least I haven't heard him say anything since his release), but it would be nice to hear him make some public comment about how/if his views toward animal abuse have changed; if he plans to do anything to help abused or neglected animals now -- that kind of thing would go a long way, I would guess.
  16. Sensory deprivation tank?
  17. I do hope he demonstrates in whatever way he can that he is rehabilitated, as far as torturing animals to death. But that's between him and his conscience. Keeping him from making a living in his chosen profession serves no purpose.
  18. OK, speaking of silence -- has anyone been to a place where there is actually no, zero, nada, no man-made noise at all? I mean nothing. No hum of electrical wires, or drone of a distant highway? No planes flying overhead, or train whistles. Nothing. Getting to such a place is not that easy. I don't believe such a place exists within a day's drive from where I live. Perhaps taking a boat straight out into the gulf for 30 - 40 miles might do the trick. But I would not be surprised if such a place were impossible to find east of the Mississippi in the lower 48.
  19. I believe it was. Some "real jazz fans" were outraged that Ellington's likeness could be used for such blatantly commercial purposes.
  20. Loved this little one-star, counter opinion from a "jazz fan" over at amazon: Each to his or her own, I guess. It's odd how some folks take such great offense at what he was doing in the latter part of his career/life. (The minority, of those who offered opinions at amazon, I should point out). I'm not familiar with his music from this period, but the brief sound samples do offer a hint of what you describe, the jazz fan's sensibilities notwithstanding. At some point, I'll wade into this. Not sure the time is now.
  21. What would that be? Direct implants. I can envision the customer complaint department: (After three-hour wait on hold) -- "I, I, I, I ordered the complete Blue Note catalog implant and you implanted the "Complete Dance to the '80s! Set on perpetual shuffle!" ... "Sorry sir, you'll have to contact our technical support division in Nairobi on Monday. Have I answered all your questions today?"
  22. Well, I guess Upton playing too shallow wasn't such a big problem after all ....
  23. All I gotta say is, BJ Upton plays too shallow in CF!!! He doesn't cover as much ground as people give him credit for, and invariably, when he does have to back up on a ball, he's twisting and turning and spinning all over the place to try to find it. ... They ruled it a triple, but he should have had that.
  24. Right now? Happy birthday to fasstrack. Happy birthday to fasstrack ... bin going on for days ...
