When was his electric period? .... early electric period, preferably.

I enjoy a few circus tricks with my music. A little juggling, some fire eating. Nothing quite like a flute solo performed atop a unicycle! Adds a whole new dimension. Might have something to do with me living in a circus town, complete with circus museum, tiny houses built for little people, and a permanent little big top adjacent to one of the local high schools for young performers.

Just ordered the Jazz Lab sessions, and have 'Rat Race Blues' and 'Sayin' Somethin' !' on the way as well, so I'm set to immerse myself a bit. Looking forward to it. Nice thread (mostly)

If I were in the audience, it would make no difference to me. I always assumed when musicians do leave the stage during performance, it was for some purpose (to replace a broken reed, drink some water, etc.) Perhaps the singer and rock enthusiast are more tuned to entertaining and engaging the audience.

hope you had some cake! ... and a great birthday.

OK, I'm in a groove now. Usually happens around this time of day. I'm kind of a night person, although I still get up fairly early in the morning, which might explain why I'm in a rut for the first part of the day. ... But I'm definitely groovin' now. .... Yep ... No, really. .... I AM GROOVIN" !!! damnit

Do you remember the winery name? I do not. My brother in law, who is very much into wine, broke it out a couple of Christmases ago. I'll ask him about it and report back.
-
Yeah, that's a fair statement, but so is saying that each of us could only have been born when we were born. It would be wrong if something didn't get born at the only time it could have. Only you could have said that.

In a rut, but I'm kinda groovin' with it.

I'm happy that the ignorant were invited in the initial post to participate. That would be me. I enjoy an occasional glass of red, pinot I suppose. Rarely white. The most unusual wine I've had was an ice-cold, sweet (but not candy sweet) wine. As I understand it, the process involves letting the grapes chill on the vine with a frost before harvest. Maybe even a hard freeze, not sure. Served in tall, thin glass as desert. Unusual. Very flavorful. "Sideways" bloopers.

What I'm finding out is that a lot of what "we" find "dated" is what a few generations on are often finding to be "substance". Very true. Bach was considered 'dated' for decades. What happens with time is that the 'hipness' that Papsrus talks about slips into the background. If the music has the power to engage, move, enthrall then it's that which comes to the front; the packaging is still there but it doesn't have the distracting effect it has at the time and in the immediate aftermath (especially in the immediate aftermath, when new packaging makes the old look out-dated). I can enjoy Charlie Parker or Lester Young completely undistracted by the hipness that swirled around them at the time. What matters has endured regardless of changing fashions on the surface. Yes. Part of my own filter. I overstated things when I said much of what was happening in the late 60s, early 70s doesn't translate well to today. That's clearly wrong. A friend's 9-year-old daughter was listening to the Beatles White Album last week. That album holds up very well, I think. And there is clearly a lot of music that was being created during that time that holds up today. I think part of my own reaction to electric Miles stems from the fact that I was around and listening to music during that time, but I was listening to much less revolutionary music -- the White Album, for instance. So perhaps "dated" was the wrong sentiment. The music was "in the moment," and the "moment" was very much 1970, with all that implies. That might be a better way of saying it. Whereas the White Album could have been made almost anytime post 1970, including today, electric Miles could only have happened when it did. I think that's a fair statement.

Just watched the documentary "Miles Electric," which looks at Miles Davis' quick transformation to his early electric period. A little uneven, but a nice chunk of footage of his band at Isle of Wight. Pretty amazing. Comments from the likes of Crouch, Santana (a lot of Santana, which seemed odd at first but kind of makes sense), Holland, Corea, Hancock, Joni Mitchell, Airto Moreira, DeJohnette. Interesting music, although not something I'm really drawn to. Like pretty much everything that happened late 60s, early 70s, very much of the period; saturated with early 70s hipness that doesn't translate all that well beyond the period. For me, anyways. But I have no doubt the music was real. There's no way that music was contrived. It was new and uncharted, for the band members themselves. Keith Jarrett said he wasn't really interested in playing an organ, and felt he brought nothing "musical" to the band. What he brought, he said, was energy. Moreira was amazing. I hadn't realized how much he brought to that middle part of the music that was referred to earlier. And the look on Holland's face as they played at Isle of Wight was one of "I'm having the time of my life." They all looked that way, really. Except for Miles -- super cool. btw, Crouch said in the documentary that listening to Bitches Brew was like have a nail pounded into his hand with every note Miles Davis played, sort of an oblique crucifixion reference, I guess.

Cheers mate! Happy birthday. -
Dan, if you're watching the Rays-Royals broadcast tonight from KC, check out the two rock stars sitting three rows back behind home plate. Wow. Wouldn't want to have paid a bunch of money for seats down there and have to sit behind those two hairdos. ED: OK, they put on ball caps now. An improvement. Shields, on the other hand, a little shaky.

Dang ... all this time I thought it was a record label.

A good man. RIP.

I should say that I anticipate my CD purchases will slow to a crawl soon as my wax cylinder collecting kicks in.

I have Rat Race Blues but not Sayin' Somethin'...how is it? Both on order. Should be here within a week. I typically post in the "buy" thread when I place the order. In fact, often simultaneously, as I press the 'place order' button. ... I should probably wait until they arrive. I have nothing with Gryce as leader now, but the samples on both of these sounded tremendous. When I've had a chance to spin 'em a couple of times, I'll certainly toss my impressions into the mix. I'm looking forward to both.

... and?

Don't mean to be overly dramatic, but ... I guess I'm lucky in a way that I didn't really embrace jazz, or any kind of music for that matter, with any degree of passion until I hit my mid-40s. Now, in my early 50s, I'm still very much in the discovery stage. Still connecting the dots. Still marveling at the genius of the music. The stories. The history. New discoveries and "ah-ha!" moments come with great regularity, for me. And I'm thankful for that. I like to think those moments are available to everyone, no matter their familiarity with the music. But I go through periods where none of the music on my shelves seems to inspire me, just like anyone else. I don't have to be inspired by it to listen to it, though. It can be simply a comfortable friend, at times. I'm OK with that. Other times, I will sit, eyes closed, volume up, absorbing as best I can the amazing wizardry of a Clifford Brown, or Bird, or Ellington, and it can be overwhelming. I'm pretty sure everyone here knows that feeling. "Nourishment" is the term that comes to mind. Having been parched for so long, the music now provides me with great nourishment. And so I drink mightily from the trough. Five new discs arrived today. ... Bartender!
