Blown calls of this magnitude are extremely rare, obviously. I don't know about basing a decision on instant replay on this one call, but I still feel like Selig could invoke the "best interests of the game" clause in this case to reverse the call. Galarraga is a class act. Joyce seems like a class act, too. It's just a mistake that should be corrected. ESPN is running a poll on this very question.

Thoughtful post. Did you mean to say 'reverential' in the final sentence? I'd add Zappa to Bill's list of those who produce(d) music that is at the same time irreverent and substantial.

Woody Allen article

Nice article. Thanks -
I'd shy away from expanding instant replay for the appeal of obviously blown calls, but this seems like not just a routine blown call, but one with historic implications. One could argue that these extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary measures. The commissioner's office should reverse the call. If not that, then the Supreme Court. Or maybe not. It'll go down in history either way. Just a shame, though.

I missed all this -- because I was watching the blown call at third base up in Toronto tonight that robbed the Rays of a run (down 2-1 at the time). The umps have had some real issues lately.

I started collecting CDs very hesitantly...
papsrus replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Hah. You guys are small potatoes when it comes to holding off on buying CDs. I didn't start seriously collecting CDs until about 2005. In fact, I was collecting mp3's before I was buying any CDs at all. I didn't even realize they played from center to edge until a few months ago. I win. -

Up again. Just ordered the Frog title. Looking forward to it.

Hard to believe this is real. Any geologists weighing in on this one?

The less we pay attention to Clapton, the better of civilization will be. Clapton seems to hold the love-to-hate role in the blues world that Jarrett has in the jazz. Whatever ... my beef is with the "most important blues singer that ever lived" crappola. That happens to be his opinion and, as I stated earlier, if Johnson was a huge influence on Clapton's playing, what is the issue. To him, he's apparently the "most importan blues singer that ever lived." So what? Everyone has someone who has tremendously influenced them in their life, whether or not that person is the greatest whatever. Geez man, chill a bit. His opinion, fine. This is mine - that anyone who think Johnson is the "best" blah blah hasn't really listened beyond him. IMO. Besides, the phrase used isn't "most important" - the phrase used is "the best". There's a difference. Ya could argue the first - I'd still disagree. But the second? Nah. IMHO. I'm chillin dude His opinion, fine. Your opinion, fine. It's all in our humble opinions I'm just quoting this cause the multiple quote thing starts to look like a 3D beveled camera lens after a while.

Man, you've got that right. The guy was a total disaster. Wild as hell. Walking guys all over the place. Threw a pickoff attempt at second (up by 2 runs at the time) into center field. How in the world did Gaston leave him in so long? And then he goes at the ump for ... what? Not calling his wild-ass pitches strikes? That wasn't a Rays comeback. That was a Jays implosion.

I dunno. What if the nose-blower was described as a short, stocky Italian woman? Or how about a wobbly Irishman? A pasty white Dane? I get that folks are a bit sensitive about the Hispanic reference, but I don't think the OP was using it in a pejorative way. If that was his intent, he could have been a lot more colorful than 'elderly Hispanic.' And the important thing here is the guy blew his nose in a shirt!!?!! Man! -

To be fair, Olney credited Halladay for taking advantage of the strike zone he was given. It wasn't as though his pitches were hitting those spots by mistake. But if they're going to make the claim that the strike zone was unusually large, they should back it up with some video evidence. Ed: typo

Unless you see both as nothing more than humans torturing animals. I understand the guy is back in intensive care. The bull is still dead.
-
Buster Olney was just on espn news yammering about how Halladay benefited from an "elastic" strike zone. I think he also called it gigantic. Of course, he didn't provide any video evidence. I was paying fairly close attention to the latter innings with a couple guys who were Marlins supporters, and nobody said anything at the time about an 'elastic' or 'gigantic' strike zone. Olney should just acknowledge that the guy pitched a freakin' amazing game, unless he has video evidence that a lot of called strikes were well off the plate.

Happy birthday and best wishes Bill.

It's supposed to be a display of machismo, no? Man vs. beast. But it's nothing more than a cowardly exercise in torturing an animal to death. I have zero sympathy for the sequined tormentor. I'm fucking glad the bull nailed him.

They're not that long, so not intrusive, for me. But they don't add a whole lot either, frankly. It may have been better to include a couple of longer interviews at the end of the disc rather than shorter snippets sprinkled among the music. But at the same time, the way it's presented is kind of folksy, and so pleasant, I think.
