  1. If it has come to this, it may be time to take a look at the entirety of programs -- academic and otherwise -- offered in the Detroit school system. Why the arts and not athletics, for instance? (Some athletic programs, like football, do generate revenues. I doubt it's enough to offset the cost of the programs though.) But ... bah. Sad news. Reminds me of a story in the paper here recently about the state of Florida leading the nation in cuts for arts funding.
  2. This is a high note. What's they key? happy birthday.
  3. 'Gonzo-isms' might have been a better way to characterize it. With all due affection.
  4. Hard to tell. More like cosmic Thompsonisms sprinkled with Texas hot sauce. Seems to work just fine. Welcome (back?)
  5. Lefty JP Howell's done for the year. Had surgery today. He was shut down after 12 pitches off the mound a few days ago, so it's not unexpected, but not good news for the Rays bullpen.
  6. Usually put something on within an hour of waking in the morning. As I work a 4-12 shift, if I've no errands to run and I'm just hanging around the house before work, I'll have music playing for much of the day before heading in, and will unwind after work in the wee hours with at least a couple of discs. So that's a good 6-8 hours total right there. On days off, if I'm feeling lazy and staying around the house, I'll have music on for much of the day and evening. My attentiveness fluctuates between treating it as background music to more intent listening -- which usually is more of a late-night thing. Hardly ever use headphones anymore. That used to be my primary way of listening.
  7. He surely lived a rich life, something to be celebrated. RIP.
  8. The YouTube video is just an expression of teen-age angst/rebellion. In that context, it's quite good. Beats the hell out of smashing mailboxes with baseball bats. Young people commonly reject things (like 'traditional' jazz) before later accepting them on their own terms. As a piece of music, it's awful. Lack of technique aside, the musical statement is made in the first 10 seconds, then nothing comes of anything after that. Like electronic noise elevator music.
  9. Jemeel Moondoc Trio with William Parker and Hamid Drake -- "Live at Glenn Miller Cafe, Vol. 1"
  10. I stumbled across that yesterday. Looks interesting.
  11. Dying or listening to some of those might be a tough choice. Yes. He got off to a bit of a shaky start with that first selection. The whole idea that there are 1,000 albums that are 'must-listen' is a bit bizarre/OCD. I wonder what the 1,001st album was -- the last one eliminated? Boy that would be tough.
  12. No worries. There was a dropped fly ball in CF that led to the tying run, which conceivably could have been ruled a catch. (diving attempt. had it for a second then it popped out). That might have been what they were talking about. Anyways, basically the Rays are barely winning games they really shouldn't be, against teams with much weaker records. But ... they have beaten Cliff Lee twice already and they're managing to pull out these games with some gaping holes in the lineup. So, they're basically doing it with pitching and defense. The bullpen has been sturdier than in years past. Putting a positive spin on things, once those bats eventually do come around and they're not getting perfected by Get-Off-My-Mound guy, they should be fine.
  13. They don't seem to ever lose. Over at Pinstripe Alley some posters are claiming TB got the benefit of a bad call...I'll have to go see if I can find a highlight clip. But man, TB is just unbelievable so far. I'm truly shocked now whenever they do actually drop a game. Not sure about the bad call, whatever it was. There's bad calls in a lot of games. This one didn't hinge on any single bad call, as far as I could tell. But the Rays are kind of doing it with smoke and mirrors right now. Low-scoring, one-run, last-at-bat wins (and losses) against Seattle and Cleveland don't really fill anyone with too much confidence. They're batting .249 as a team, with Pena and Navarro in deep funks below .200. And Upton and Bartlett aren't exactly tearing the cover off the ball either -- both below .250. They're not getting to anyone's starting pitching lately, then their middle relief is keeping them in games until they can get to the other guy's bullpen and scratch out a run by hook or by crook. I'd be surprised if they managed to split the two games this week up in New York.
  14. Rays win another one-run game, 4-3 over the Tribe in 11.
  15. 1,000 Jazz Albums You Should Hear Before You Die
  16. That helped considerably. Still some gaps, but a much clearer picture. Thanks.
  17. Thank you. Looking through it now.
  18. I have this four-disc set but have either misplaced or lost the booklet, or it came with none. Got it used, so I can't recall. Anyhow, does anyone know where I might find a Noone discography or specific track information for this release? I've snooped around a bit, with limited success. Thanks.
  19. About 700 titles (counting box sets as one title). And still just scratching the surface after beginning collecting music semi-seriously about 7 years ago. I try to be somewhat selective when adding to the shelves. That's partly an economic thing, partly just a preference for being a little bit focused in my listening, especially when encountering something that is new to me. Wasn't always that way. Sales here periodically cull the herd. And there are very few titles I've sold that I regret not having now. So I guess I'd describe my music collecting generally as "so far so good."
  20. Eat some cake! ... enjoy
  21. I'd add the Padres to that list. These guys are just playing over their heads. Guess we should add the first-place Reds to that list, too (especially since I seem to have jinxed the Nats)
  22. Nice little walk-off win for the Rays tonight after struggling at the plate pretty much collectively for the first 7 innings last week or so. To wit: Burrell (.202) designated for assignment Saturday.
