  1. Yeah, I agree. Remember when we started? Jim did us all a favour by starting this board after the demise of the BNBB. Lots of us migrated here and we've been grateful to Jim ever since. I've been here since the start and although it's Jim's board we've made it ours too. I really enjoy this place, I don't upset anyone (I hope) and I don't get offended. I'm just interested in the music. I'm on holiday now for a couple of weeks, I want it to be here when I come back.
  2. Sadly no one. After fifty years of listening to jazz I've sampled a lot. I know what I like. I don't particularly enjoy a lot of what is going on these days and I don't have the inclination to delve into it.
  3. Two things got me this week, both on my mp3 player. Cisum, New York Contemporary Five ( track omitted from the cd issue) What's New; Charles Gayle.
  4. I have the US Cadet 2lp set of Percussion Discussion. Sound is quite adequate imo.
  5. Happy Birthday Chuck, and many more too.
  6. It looks like this CD (Hard Bop Academy) is kind of hard to find. Charly also released the Blakey session backed with a Max Roach session (presumably the same one) on a CD called The Hard Drive (different from the Bethlehem CD), which is also OOP but a little cheaper used. Much as I like both Blakey (I have more CD's by him than by anyone else) and Roach, both of those sessions are dogs, relative to their other work of the period. I think you are being a bit harsh on theses albums. Not the most exciting things by these artists but nevertheless a very pleasant listen as you'd expect with Hardman, McLean. Dorham and Mobley.
  7. Art Blakey; Tough, followed by Max Roach; Max. Both from Cadet 2lp set Percussion Discussion
  8. UK Affinity issued this on cd coupled with the Max Roach session.
  9. Still on Prestige. Bennie Green; Walking Down (OJC)
  10. Bob Brookmeyer; Revelation (aka The Dual Role of ....). UK Xtra from Prestige.
  11. Bula-Beige by Tadd Dameron and his Orchestra from Fontaineblleau (Prestige)
  12. Clifford Brown Memorial. Prestige, French Carrere pressing.
  13. I'm not a big on Don Ellis but this is well worth seeing. I can recommend it too.
  14. Have the original Prestige LP of that, bought in the 60s. The music has stood the test of time, but not the cover - front and back are parting company. A real classic. Still sounds great today. Now, as it's next to Dameron on the shelf - Ted Curson; Fire Down Below; OJC/Prestige
  15. Quite a surprise. Trane's not the kind of person you expect on this programme. Nothing new but worth a listen.
  16. Tadd Dameron; Fontainebleau; OJC/Prestige

    Andrew Hill

Voices apart there is some very fine playing on Lift Every Voice that easily overcomes the negatives. I rather like it.

    AOTW

Thanks for resuscitating aotw Ray. Sorry to say I don't have this one, hopefully others do.
  19. My copy arrived this morning. Still looks like JJI inside and out but there is some advertising. A layout revamp is promised. Seems to be a decent and varied number of cd reviews. A lot of space is taken up by 'record of the year'. Too soon to pass judgement.
  20. A super set. The melodies are treated with total respect and it makes you realise just how good some of these themes are.

    Jimmy Ponder

Very reliable guitarist. Generally worth a listen.
  22. Mal Waldron; Left Alone. Bethlehem (French Musidisc)
  23. Still with Parlan Headin' South. Blue Note (Japanese Toshiba pressing)
