  1. Very sad news. A jazz great. His from the 40s onwards was exceptional. His best work for me is his mid-50s playing, arranging and composing through to the Riverside Sextets. Truly exceptional, exciting and essential.
  2. Great tour all round. Some fine riding by Armstrong (not overlooking as Contador, Cavendish etc etc.) . Forming his own team next year, sponsored by Radio Shack. Interesting developments.
  3. I went to a couple of Jazz Goes to College recordings. Albert Ayler at the London School Of Economics was one. Memory is a bit hazy about another. It was certainly in Chelsea, Horace Silver maybe? A google search tells me that Silver did do a Jazz Goes To College but I couldn't find any details. Apparently the whole series is missing, presumed wiped.
  4. This is what I enjoy! A very nice date, perhaps not "essential" in the strict sense of the word but it's one I wouldn't want to be without. Mine's on vinyl by the way.
  5. Many of them were 'officially' available on VHS about 12 or so years ago in the UK - licensed from the Beeb. A few have been issued on DVD in Andorra through 'Improv-Jazz' and their ilk but I'm not sure how legit these are. Occasionally, some of the shows are broadcast by the BBC. Re: the Rollins - it won't be a 'Jazz 625' as that series was broadcast in B&W in 1964 and 1965 only. If it's the show when Rollins comes out of his taxi on Frith St playing wild tenor, goes through the main entrance to the club and then segues into the band I think I might have caught it when it was originally broadcast but have never seen it since. It certainly left a lasting impression with me ! Possibly part of BBC2's 'In Concert' series - but definitely not 'Jazz 625'. Sadly, quite a few of the original 'Jazz 625's' were erased in the 1970s to free up blank tape for game shows etc. I'm sure I've not seen this, love too see it televised if it still exists.
  6. I'm one of those who can't find much to buy. In any event I purchase on line now. There's no choice because the jazz racks just get smaller and smaller on each visit to a store. Just the odd Miles, perhaps a couple of RVGs and a few compilations. It's just not worth the effort going to a store, at least in my city.
  7. John Coltrane; One Two & Four. Vogue 2lp set (contains Trane's recording for Roulette)
  8. Al Cohn; Broadway/1954; Prestige Jazz Classics, purple label. Label actually reads 'Live At The Cafe Bohemia'
  9. Great album, I still treasure my vinyl copy.
  10. Happy Birthday man.
  11. OUCH!, Happy Birthday fasstrack
  12. Standing to one side or getting off the stand is okay but disappearing completely no. That's my opinion as a small club promoter.
  13. Looks just like mine Brownie. The music brings out the quality of the compositions.
  14. Art Farmer Quintet; The Time And The Place. UK CBS. (Studio session with dubbed applause)
  15. I didn't remember this being quite so unforgetable as Jack suggests. I agree with Dan, it's a very agreeable date. Mercy Mercy Mercy is a throwaway but the rest is entertaining. Goin Out Of My Head isn't on the lp.
  16. Art Farmer Quintet Plays The Great Jazz Hits. CBS(UK).
  17. There is a short note by Zorn (three paragraphs) on page four of my booklet. ps. thanks for reminding me of the Colossal Saxophone Sessions. I ought to give it spin.
  18. Always thought the title track went like mad on that one and was in a different class from the other tracks. Someone - Higgins, I think - is making a lot of "gone" noises on that one. Notice it had a different recording date from the others. Thanks for reminding me aboout this one Bill and Bob. Disposed of the vinyl years ago but it's a fine session with Fathead being something of a BN wild card. The cds second session withe the three horn front line has some nice sounds too. Higgins is certainly 'gone' on Sonic Boom.
  19. Interesting news. Presumably John is taking things a little easier, deservedly. He seems to have been a pillar of the London jazz scene as long as I can remember. Hopefully he has some good things tucked away.
  20. I know the feeling too. I feel just the same and agree with most of the comments posted above. And it's not just my age! Like GA I love my 50s/60s stuff and a few later artists but there is so little happenning of real interest now.
  21. Happy Birthday EKE BBB, have a great day.
  22. Thriller by Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy (on Twilight Dreams).
  23. Get well soon Lee.
  24. I like trains, especially American ones!
