  1. I am sorry to hear about your sad loss. I've had some health worries recently and it's certainly put me off listening. There were still some good days when the joy of music was there. My guess is that listening pleasure will return.
  2. Just finshed Walt Dickerson; Sense of Direction and now Tadd Dameron; Fontainebleau (hadn't spotted that this has a Gil Melle jacket design)
  3. I only have Prestige vinyl but I've got out Sense of Direction for later.

  5. As Sidewinder says, more sad news to start the day. A truly original vibes player.

  7. I have this. I found it Amsterdam years ago and at the time was unknown to me. I've never heard of it or seen it again. The label reads Jazzline but the spine says Delta. Recorded Studio Cornet Cologne 12, 13, 14 July 1989. 1. With an 'E' Please 2. So Spiritual 3. Punalu Peter 4. Chazz 5. Hughe Blues 6. Ballad For The Blackman 7. Pain.

  10. Woofin' and Tweetin' by Gene Ammons. Rexlaxed!!!!!
  11. Although we share the same surname I don't think we are related but I probably share the same gene.
  12. The Salim set has some great music, very definitely recommended. However it doesn't include two alternate takes that appeared on the Atlantic/Savoy reissue of Pretty For The People.
  13. This afternoon Gene Ammons; Woofin' and Tweetin' Art Farmer Quintet with Gigi Gryce Art Farmer; When Farmer Met Gryce
  14. My thanks to Flurin
  15. Back in the 70s or 80s.
  16. Chico Freeman; No Time Left
  17. Same here Mike.
  18. Four Altos. On the turntable now.
  19. Brian is probably the most knowledgable jazz broadcaster/writer in the UK. It's a shame he's not heard from more frequently. His Radio London programme was superb but he was eventualy sidelined for a more 'professional' voice.
  20. Is this the Hal Stein who recorded a very pleasant album for Progressive in 1955 and the Prestige Four Altos session among other things? All nice stuff.

    Jimmy Giuffre

I'm on a Giuffre marathon right now. He's hardly been off the player this week. What an astonishing body of work, even unlikely things like Music Man are little gems. Always new things to discover. What a man!
  22. Thanks for coming up with this one. My copy is a French vinyl reissue, when it came ot I'd not come across the album before or heard of Sleet for that matter. Sleet is in good company here so the disc can hardly fail but Sleet is excellent, as the Penguin Guide points out he 'shies away from the obvious' which gives the session a lot of its appeal. Listening to the record points up the urgent need to reissue the Lenny McBrowne albums.
  23. Jimmy Giuffre; disc 1. Just about to start on disc 2.
  24. His recordings never seem to deliver the real James Carter. He plays in too many styles and touches too many bases for my taste although clearly he's a fine player. Saw him a couple of times, once with Lester Bowie which was exciting but hampered by poor sound and another gig where he played baritone only which was excellent, excinting stuff. I've heard a boot of the organ trio and have to admit that was pretty good.
