I rarely listen to big bands but Ferguson's band of this period is something else. Fine arrangements by the band members and some pretty good soloists. Big band bop with the much same level of excitement of the Gillespie Big Band imo.
If pressed I'd say I prefer Message From Newport.
The EMI/Americans Swinging CD reissue?
American's Swinging CD. To close and hard sounding, but not as unpleasant as I remembered. Nevertheless some exciting playing from Slide, Kuhn's 'singing' is a turn off.
I've sold a few on ebay in the UK and Europe, if I get the equivalent of $5 I think I've done well. On the other hand the pressings are nice and imo OJC vinyl issues are well worth picking up.
I usually wake around 6.00-6.30. Lay in bed listening to radio 4 for about 30 minutes, then get up make a cup of tea and try to get my wife up and off to work.
Just got around to giving this one a spin, the first in quite a while. A decent dose of funk, especially on the title track. Hate the electonics, really spoils Lou's tone, sounds so thin and reedy.
Ditto, not worth me making the trip.
More interesting is a tour by Jason Moran in May. He'll be augmenting his trio with some local players and taking Monk's Town Hall Concert as a taking off point.
