  1. The turkey will stand a good chance of winning if past contests are anything to go by.
  2. Belated Greetings Noj, trust it was a good one.
  3. Was supposed to noticeable down here in the south. I didn't feel a thing either - I was in Spain.
  4. GA, am I right in thinking this reissues the original lp. Any improvement in sound quality over the previous 'complete' issue?
  5. Sorry Dan, I've not heard the anything by Gene Harris on Concord. But hearing Gene over here s not too long before he died I can't imagine him putting in a dull performance. I didn't mean to generalise too much about the label as I can't hear everything and overall I'm not that fond of many of their artists so that probably has a bearing on my opinion. But there's definitely something about the label and the production that even artists I should like seem to turn in run of the mill performances.
  6. Off thread a little I know but maybe of interest. I saw the BoB at Ronnie Scott's Old Place the dummer on that evening was Barry Altschul!
  7. Whatever the story it's a super listen. Should be much better known.
  8. We've booked Scott to playat our club on several occasions. He always puts on a decent show. Swing, ballads even a bit of bebop. The audience always goes away happy. But, for me, when it comes to home listening he doesn't excite of hold my interest. The album with Mulligan must be one of the dullest affairs I've heard from Mulligan. But then I have this 'curse of Concord' theory. So many of their productions don't seem to have very much life in them. The only Hamilton cd I have at the moment is 'After Hours'. A pleasant enough set of ballads but a lot of the credit must go to the Flanagan/Cranshaw/Nash rhythm section for keeping things interesting.
  9. I just read the review of this. Normally I don't worry too much about big band albums - not really my scene - but there's something about MF's music from this time that I find hard not to like. Gonna have to get it before very long.
  10. We're always happy to welcome a new name to aotw/m. But as CT says we do have method so things don't get out of control and become a free for all - not that that's happened lately! The system does help paticularly when it comes to updating the aotw/m past and present thread.
  11. Talk about Dizzy... Definitely my favourite example of Grey.
  12. Difficult to pick a favourite. But they are all pre mid-fifties. The Roost Sessions, West Coast Jazz, the Getz/Brookmeyer Quintets, the Prestige quartet dates. They all give me a lot pf pleasure In fact it was a friend's 78 of Getz doing Pennies From Heaven with Carlos Vidal that was one of my very earliest jazz memories. Those were the days!
  13. I'm happy with my Rega Elys. I like the three screw fixing. Not tried anything else though.
  14. Eighteen months after my last post I still feel that both the Vietnam cds are excellent albums. They've lost none of the interest since their release and get played as much as anything. Highly recommnded still.
  15. Seeing Frisell live was always breathtaking so I bought a lot of his stuff. But in the end I had to ask myself did I want so many of his recordings. This was one of those that I chose to discard via ebay. Still have two or three of his albums (the two Buster Keaton's as a reminder of the concert when he palyed this music to the films) but I still have the Motian trios/quartets. That's probably enough for the present.
  16. No thanks, allowing for a the 'train wrecks' there must be plent of scope here for a Rare Groove Mosaic Select and Jimmy Smith album.
  17. Thanks everyone. A quiet but very nice day.
  18. Loved the clips, thanks for posting There's one just a few yards from my home to keep cars out of a buses only road. It's either stuck down which isn't too bad but when it's stuck in the up position it's a bus traveller's nightmare. I can report that it's working well today.
  19. Have a great day.
  20. Happy Birthday Hans.
  21. You had me worried for a while there. I sometimes have a look at Amazon's 'get it for less' links. An occasional bargain there.
  22. While they are at it how about reissuing some of the Pacific Jazz organ dates.
  23. Anyone mention Charles Tyler. Avant garde alto with Ayler and on his own ESP recordings. Reappears later playing rip-roaring baritone.
  24. Can't understand it either.
  25. My favourite Rollins Impulse. My copy has rather noisy surfaces.
