  1. Belated Birthday Greetings Ronald.
  2. The All Stars albums on Contemporary are uniformly good. Always make for nice if not too deep listening experience.
  3. An excellent read. His opinions provide plenty of food for thought.
  4. Another guaranteed buyer here.
  5. FWIW, a happy paypal user.

    Frank Rosolino

Most Rosolino recordings can be recommended without qualification (an exception maybe his vocal album). Check out his double on Sackville for some late, live and soulful FR.
  7. Sad news. Last time I saw Mike play was many years ago. His playing was so intense, I think he had health problems even then. Mre than just a footnote to British jazz.
  8. I agree with Hans, but I still have the vinyl.
  9. Happy Birthday Dan, and many happy returns.
  10. I'll recommend this this one too. Great music and more than acceptable sound.
  11. Elmo Hope; Homecoming. Disc 2 of Milestone 2fer.
  12. Hi Bob, my very best wishes to you for a very happy birthday. John
  13. Dorham, JJ, Hank, Silver, Blakey etc. You can't go wrong.

    Clarence Sharpe

Didn't he appear on one or two Archie Shepp Impulse albums?
  15. I've always liked the Tiny Grimes album 'Callin' The Blues'. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the other Grimes items on Swingsville.
  16. Hopefully the Jazz review is strong as ever. The last few issues have been very dull with not much new. Relying on tests and comments from prmoters etc doesn't make for much of a magazine. Going two monthly doesn't seem to indicate strength to me. Hope it does go on - but it has to improve imo.
  17. just small irritating ones - right when you start the disc: there's (even) a small edit right in the middle of the crowd sound of the 41 second cut (unbelievably so) and then it very abruptly goes into Autumn Leaves - actually clipping the first note from Miles. Just irritating blips like that that I think could've used some care. The more that I think of this first cut - Waiting For Miles - business, the more I think that it's a weird, unnecessary slap at Miles' personality, ...or it could be my lack of sleep... I have a boot of this show and Miles' entry in Autumn Leaves is intact. Surely the is idea that official issues of these things should be an upgrade on the boots, no? And some folks wonder why the bootleg business thrives. Still, who gives a crap about the music, just as long as they spell the lawyers' names correctly, right? Nevertheless - all good stuff.
  18. Sad news indeed.
  19. I still have this one but it doesn't come out very often. I can't say I'm too fond of it. Best Zorn for me is the Sonny Clark Memorial Quartet and the News For Lulu cds. On the other hand seeing Naked City live was quite an experience and one I wouldn't have wanted to miss - incredible. Can't say I'd want to replay it home though.
  20. There's somthing called a slide saxophone. Snub Mosley was an exponent long ago. A little like an alto sax mouthpiece and crook with a slide sort of describes it.
  21. I seem to recall a picture of Braxton with one of the lowest clarinets. He needed a step ladder to get to the mouthpiece.
  22. I'd be interested to hear this band but so far I've not taken the plunge.
  23. My recommendation - try to buy a replacement speaker and fit it yourself.
  24. Sad news, a fine drummer.
  25. I was really looking forward to this being a big fan of the Octet. An under appreciated ensemble. I found this one slightly disappointing, somehow it seems a bit disjointed doesn't quite hang togeother like the best of the Atlantics. Sister Salvation is still my choice as the best by Hampton from this period - it really packs a punch. It's still a keeper though and I think this completes the reissue of all the Octet recordings if the rather unsatisfactory Fresh Sounds issue is included.
