  1. Not really my scene but I have soft spots for the Dicky Wells especially the four trombone sides and the Buster Bailey.
  2. I have 'Bluestruck' and From The Heart' both on Blue Note but originally on Something Else. Both are fine but the band on Bluestruck is probably more interesting.

    Kirk Lightsey

Very active in Europe, has tours the UK regularly, tow or three times in the last two years. He puts on a good show and his happy to chat. He has a superb pedigree and I agree he should be much better known. My personal favourite by him is The Leaders Trio, very sweet. There used to be a video around of the Leaders, not too much music but a lot of good talk from Lightsey.
  4. This Fontana series, all with rather tasty covers, went to maybe a dozen or so issues. Most, if my memory is correct, were straight reissues, retitled with a, for the time a trendy title. Another that springs to mind is the John Lewis, Bill Perkins, Jim Hall Pacific Jazz issue. Jim Hall Trio too?
  5. Happy Birthday Chris, have a great day.
  6. Have a very happy birhday.
  7. I still have my old UK vinyl issue. Don't have the luxury of being able to play it the moment but I can recall it warmly. 'Snap crackle' is right.
  8. If I remember correctly the first UK issue of 'Kind Of Blue' was on Fontana.
  9. I missed most of this thread when I was off line for weeks following my house move so I got a bit behind with all the appreciation here. Just caught up with Frank with 'Not Afraid To Live'. It was Nate's review in Cadence which finally got me to get the credit card out (and excellent value from Caiman). Fascinating piano jazz. I'll be getting more.
  10. French press for me. I have a couple, one 3 cup size makes a nice serving for one, and a larger one for when we have guests. Makes a good cup of coffee, relatively cheap and easy to clean.
  11. My mono copy of 'Complete Communion' has the ear too
  12. Received my Jazztet today. Good service and a great price. So thanks again Alfred.

    Shadow Wilson

Always tasty and tasteful. Mulligan Meets Monk springs to mind as another fine example of his drumming.
  14. Would you believe Johnny Lytle. The Tuba recordings or The Village Caller. Can't help feeling better after those.
  15. Many happy returns Chris.
  16. Thanks Hans, the language links were just off the screen. What an idiot!! I'll know better next time.
  17. Thanks for the link Alfred. Ordered the Jazztet. Didn't find the website too intuitive for someone without any knowledge of German but I seem to have managed it.
  18. I've just come across an interview with Lester in a borrowed copy of "The Jazz Musician 15 Years of Interviews - the best of Musician interviews".
  19. A very happy fiftieth John
  20. WE promoted a nice quintet gig earlier this week by two top British players, Guy Barker (trumpet) and Alan Barnes (alto and baritone). It's basically a pick up band with Barnes supplying the charts. Numbers played- It's you or no one Landscape Dis here Old folks A peck a sec Raincheck Line for Lyons Well you needn't Star crossed lovers Spontaneous combustion Some surprising choices with pieces by Pepper, Hubbard and Adderley.
  21. Nothing useful on the jacket of "Hot Horn" Everest FS 361. The drummer is given as Billy Hayes, the pianist Cedar Watton??
  22. Happy birthday Glen.
  23. Love this one, even have the tee shirt.

  25. Have a great day Brad.
