  1. I love BassDrumBone but I can't say I feel very excited about this one. The guests will only detract from what's special about BassDrumBone .At the moment I'm a pass, Maybe later.
  2. Excellent. Fine solos all round. Harper was outstanding but Weiss, Handy and Henderson were all excellent. Billy Hart was thunderous and exciting and perfect for this band. Decent sound too. Very nice to meet up with Sidewinder again.
  3. I was there too. I don't remember any interruptions during the performance and there was no evidence that I could see that there were any back stage problems. I seem to recall that Harris played in a sleeveless vest. I do remember that it was an astonishing performance dominated by Ayler's sound which had to heard to be believed. A real spine tingling event and one the most memorable concerts I've attended.
  4. I bought a few interesting things by mail order from GI (Gordon Ingliss) Records back in the day. The pressing quality is as, you say just okay, but the sound is rather flat. The US issue was a rarity back then so this issue was very welcome.
  5. Fred Hopkins is an absolute monster on bass. He left us far too early but I did get to see him with Air and David Murray.
  6. My copy is on the Scottish GI label.
  7. I went there many times in the late 70s early 80s during the golden age of arts funding. Odd that the documentary didn't mention jazz at all, just alternative music. During the various Camden Jazz Weeks/Camden Festivals I saw among others, AEoC, Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers, George Coleman Octet, WSQ, Blood Ulmer, Freddie Hubbard, Chet Baker, Carla Bley Orch, Duke Jordan, Air, as well as a number of UK bands in support. Always very good sound and a good view of the stage for any seat. I don't recall it being anywhere near as bad as the documentary made out during the time of my attendances. My avatar photograph was taken there.
  8. Sorry to be late but Happy Birthday..
  9. Belated Birthday greetings GA.
  10. For the quartet tracks with Coltrane, but stayed on for the Mulligan
  11. I still have a Vogue 78 of Flamingo. I'm not a Bostic fan but this 78 is a treasured part of my music history.
  12. Around mid fifties. I can recall hearing the Gerry Mulligan Quartet on the radio before I knew what jazz was and being struck by how different it was from the popular music of the day. Soon after a friend had a 78 of Stan Getz playing These Foolish Things. Loved that one too. Within a year or so I was totally hooked. Perhaps not too bad an introduction.
  13. Sonny Rollins - Complete Prestige Recordings. Disk 6
  14. A big loss. RIP.
  15. Sad news, doubly so as a friend spoke to him not too long ago in a supermarket and he seemed to be getting on well. He played at our club several times in recent years. He always put on a good show despite his dislike of electric keyboards, Sad news, doubly so as a friend spoke to him not too long ago in a supermarket and he seemed to be getting on well. 16. I can't narrow it down to five either but these have influenced my listening significantly at various times Archie Shepp; Four For Trane Sun Ra; The Heliocentric Worlds vol 1 Sonny Rollins Plus 4 Donald Byrd; Byrd's Eye View Miles Davis; In A Silent Way and Milestones Cecil Taylor; Looking Ahead
  17. And from me. Lots of good music here. Several more or less complete takes and breakdowns and some fascinating false starts. Some of it you might not want to spin to often but there's sufficient here to make it an essential purchase imo.
  18. Hard to remember now, I was 16 or 17 at the time. I was feeling my way about then but some early purchases included. Bud Shank Quartet Shorty Rogers, Wherever the Five Winds Blow Gerry Mulligan, Mainstream of Jazz Purchase usually depended on what was in the shops and often dictated by the cover art or sleeve note.
  19. Thanks Larry, nice post. You've pretty much confirmed my opinions about a lot of this stuff. But then I'm an oldie and do not hear too much "new" these days.
  20. An all vinyl morning
  21. Felser's search for this prompted this play as it's not had a spin for quite a while
  22. I'd agree with that.
