Horace Silver's The Jody Grind is a joyous occasion for me!

Just finished Strange Strings and all I can say is WOW That first track just blew me away! I love that wicked riff Boykins gets with bowing his bass and then that section where its just Ra and that sick riff Boykins keeps on hammering out. That is badazz! Even the lo-fi production and the thundering tympany add to the overall surreal effect of the whole album. That second track with Ra with a sheet of metal or whatever it is...love it! And those strings are strange, man. And the creaking door has got to be the farthest thing Ra's ever done, IMO (btw, please excuse the amatuerish way of explaining the music). This has got to be one of the most far out albums I've ever heard by Ra. It even makes the Heliocentric Worlds sound tame! Thank you Atavistic/UMS for getting this one out! I can't wait for more ...oh wait, I got more...got to get to Night of the Purple Moon next. PS: Did anyone see the Feb 25-Mar 3 issue of Newsweek with Obama on the cover? In the article on Obama there was a pic of Deval Patrick...no mention that he was the sun of Pat nor any mention of Ra though! Edit: did anyone just catch the slip I just made?

Bought Strange Strings and Night of the Purple Moon today....haven't had a chance to listen to them yet, but I can't wait to hear that track with Ra creaking that door

Art's work for Contemporary is uniformely excellent, with Smack Up, as mentioned above, being a favorite. +11 is another favorite.

I don't think he's that remarkable in that regard. Lots and lots of bandleaders let their sidemen solo. I think Miles learned a ton from playing in Parker's band. (There's a guy who also let his sidemen solo "generously"). Seems to me that Miles looked for sax players who would offer that sort of busy tension to the music in contrast to his sparser and cooler tone and ideas that Parker offered to the young Miles. I agree. Wayne and George Coleman seem to offer that same tension.

That's interesting. Why was he using Andrew's kit? I think Philly was using pretty hard during this periond. Could it be that he sold his kit?
-
That's interesting. I don't know if that was exactly a wise decision to hand the controls over to an inexperienced pilot and let him land when winds were that strong. That could've been a disasterous outcome that could've ended in a real tragedy. edit to add that based on the 'much more experienced' pilot part, I'm assuming that that means the younger pilot is less experienced.

All this talk is getting me in the mood for Miles again, which hasn't been for a long, long time. Thanks for starting this thread!

Woke up to a frozen, ice-covered wasteland. Cars have an inch of ice on them, trees have fallen over due to the weight of the ice (not any of mine thank God) but I hear someone with a chainsaw down the street. One of my huge tree branches though, was so encrusted with ice that it is now laying on top of my roof and chimney. Apparently trees have fallen over all over the place. A co-worker of my wife's said that one of her trees came crashing through her living room window last night Luckily, I'm off today as the kids don't have school.

Looks like the weather turns shitty again tomorrow. I'm driving to Ohio on Wednesday, I hope it clears by then. We're in the middle of a winter storm warning which is supposed to continue through tomorrow. Its an ice storm in Northern Ohio and Cleveland to be specific. Drive carefully man!

I wish I was older where I could've been there buying these records as they came out. I can totally get into that feeling of holding the record in your hands and smelling the dust jacket...ahhhhhh. I guess the closest I can get is to buy the single disks and do the same thing with a cd player. I never did get into the ipod/emusic scene.

Don't forget the obligatory reissue of the Columbia/Legacy repackaging of the reissue of the 50th anniversary of Kind of Blue reissue issue.

I figured you'd enjoy it, HG. If they ever produce Seconds From Near Disaster, this will be the pilot episode, no pun intended. Yeah, that was a pretty amazing save. I would NOT want to have been in that plane, even though it all turned out fine. And Dan, I have taken to watching reruns of that show, fear-of-flying be damned! I'm actually watching Air Emergency right now, the episode is about the Philippine Air flight in which a terrorist brought the bomb parts on board in pieces, put it together in the bathroom and left it under a seat in First Class and departed the plane at its intermediate stop before heading on to Tokyo. It wasn't powerful enough to bring the plane down and iirc, the only fatality was the poor guy fated to sit in that seat. I remember seeing this episode a long time ago. IIRC, wasn't this the episode where it turned out that the terrorist was actually Ramsey Yusef? I could be mistaken though.

Funny, I was going to reach for this one yesterday and ended up grabbing Donald Byrd's 'Byrd in Flight.' This is a great album with 'Milestones' probably being one of my favorites tunes from this period. The whole band is on the case with Philly Joe especially crackling throughout. The remastering by Columbia/Legacy is quite excellent IMO.

Crazy Cleveland weather. It was 12 degrees last week and now its near 70 degrees today

If it stays around $60, maybe...

No problem! If it would remain affordable, I would consider bidding; now that would be a nice item to hang in the listening room.

Timing is everything, eh? St. Patrick's Day in Ireland and Octoberfest in Munich. Sounds like a party (depending on how the daughter factors in). Dublin should be fun for everyone on St. Patrick's as they do have a major parade etc., and that is just one of the seven days we will be there. The only time time I'm taking for myself is to go golfing at a castle we are staying at.
-
My fam and a family friend are going to Ireland for St Patrick's day and staying for the week. It will be my daughter's first vacation abroad and I'm really excited to watch her experience a country other than the US. Next year, we are planning on going to Munich for Octoberfest.

Interesting item on Ebay-appears to be an Ayler record store poster from the late '60's. Can anyone verify if this is the case? http://cgi.ebay.com/ALBERT-AYLER-RECORD-ST...1QQcmdZViewItem

Hey thanks. Learned something new today.
