Am I the only one who thinks LEEWAY is boring?
AndrewHill replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I like Leeway quite a bit. Its worth owning for Jackie McLean alone, in my opinion. I can understand that if you're expecting the opening track to be a burner, it is not. But the last two tracks are terriffic, especially Jackie Mac's Midtown Blues. I'd suggest giving it another try or two and see if it clicks. -

An unsettling and shocking view of Auschwitz
AndrewHill replied to king ubu's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I have to say that there's no easy answer to a problem of this magnitude. Has anyone here read the book 'The Good Ole Boys' published by the Free Press about 15 years ago? It gives a pretty interesting account of what happened on the 'other' side of genocide. Essentially, it included personal accounts of how the Jewish problem was handled, and in many instances, how the Wehrmacht and the SS would intoxicate themselves in order to handle their gruesome tasks, because if they were not capable of carrying out their orders, then they too would be killed for their incompetence. The photos included in the book were also peronsal snapshots of Jews in their last minutes of life or in death, which made the book all the more chilling. WWII, is tantamount of what mankind is capable of doing and I think 60years later, we have not learned our lesson from this darkest time in history. History tends to repeat itself, yet humankind are slow to learn from its mistakes. -
I dig this one too! It was the 2nd Brubeck disk that I pruchased right after Time Out.

Tubby Hayes & Clark Terry - New York Sessions
AndrewHill replied to Unk's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I became aquainted with Tubby Hayes' music when I found a Fontana import of 'Tubbs' at Dusty Groove in Chicago. Great stuff. Too bad if there is a contract violation with Columbia and _______ so we basically cannot expect a Legacy reissue with the original cover/remastering etc. -
I became aware of Rosolino's art viz 'The Music of the M Sqaud' on RCA which I enjoy quite a bit. Yeah, it has a little bit of TV kitsch to it, but it is still some pretty fine jazz music. I read a terrible outcome of Rosolino's final year in the 4th edition of the Penguin guide to jazz where he murdered his kids, wife then himself in the late 70's because he was depressed. Jesus, that was heartbreaking to read

Ok, so I bought my first CD from the Keepnews Collection, and yeah, he is ALL OVER this reissue series (and as someone pointed out, you catch Keepnews on the spine before the artist) but nonetheless, I picked up Joe's 'Power to the People', which I've never heard before and it is the shit! It seems very much in tune with Mile's 'In a Silent Way' and Foster's 'Manhatten Fever'. I'm really digging this album, and I never thought I catch myself sayin' this, but I dig the electric tracks more than the acoustic tracks! Great stuff, and I'm glad its availlable at midprice!

Picked up Joe Henderson's Power to the People from the Keepnews collection used for $8 They also had The Modern Jazz Quartet plays the music from the movie 'Odds Against Tomorrow' in the $2.50 bin so I took a chance and picked it up. I'm not really a big fan of MJQ but for that price, what the hell.

If you only own Time Out, you may want to condsider picking up the box set 'For All Time' which includes, 'Time Further Out', 'Time In', 'Countdown: Time in Outer Space' and 'Time Changes'. Its good value at about $30 and I don't think three of these titles are available for individual sale.

Ayler's 'Holy Ghost' on Live in Greenwich Village, the Complete Impulse Recordings. Albert's solo is just draw-dropping.

domestic (U.S.) RVG series on CD (complete, or the first 4-5 years)
AndrewHill replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
Cool! Printed out a copy to keep track of what I have...you know so I don't double up when my wife asks for a Christmas shopping list. -_- -
cds you sold or traded but wished you hadn't
AndrewHill replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
Regret selling my Conn BN copy of JR Monterose. Now that was 12 years ago, and for some reason the music didn't hit me right. Now in hindsight, I wished I would've given it a second chance and it doesn't appear to be on the RVG horizon. Hard to believe that a CD can bug someone for over a decade. That's kinda scary I also regret selling some of the 10 inch conns too. I sold the Sal Salvador and the two Howard McGhee's. Boy, that was stupid. -
And while I like both, I like the earlier bonus material with Ponder even more than the session that was released. I think Ponder especially, adds a hell of a lot to the date -- and being the only guitar player to grace an Andrew Hill album (at least with Hill as the leader), the session is really a special one in my book. (Doesn't hurt that it has Woody Shaw and Frank Mitchell on it either.) If all you have is the vinyl of Grass Roots, you really should grab a cheap copy of the CD sometime, if ever you have the chance. ESPECIALLY if Grass Roots is your favorite Hill date -- you'll get earlier "prototype" versions of three of the tunes found on the later (released) session, plus two similarly styled tunes that are otherwise unreleased (best as I can remember). Huge thumbs up for Grass Roots. I remembering draggin' my feet on this one because this date was advertised as a 'groove' date, which is not the usual Hill bag, but I wisened up and got it before it went out print and Jesus what a great disk! I like Jimmy Ponder's contribution on this one too. Its hard to imagine Hill with a guitar player but Ponder fits like a glove. Can't imagine what those tunes would sound like without Ponder on them.

Important win for the Browns todaay, we need a serious morale boost. -
Voted for Stan and Zoot. Another suggestion (and this is what I named my two cats): Tom and Jerry
