If I was to choose, it would have to be Evidence for me as well, and I like this tune for the exact same reasons you do. The angularity and spacing are amazing! My favorite version is on Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk on Atlantic. Blakey makes that version just as much as Monk does, and this is perhaps one of my favorite drum solos of all time! Runner-up, is Bye-Ya where I think I like the version on the Columbia best-and a lot of that has to do with Rouse's solo-just amazing! The trio version on the Prestige is also nearly just as good.

I third that. Absolutely love this package (bought mine for $73 dollars thanks to a teacher sale). You will not be disappointed.

The daddy of them all. Oh Thanks.

What label is that? Lonehill? Is that a comp of Savoy material? Will spin Modern Wondows Suite tonight. Curson is a special kind of trumpeter-kind of like Woody Shaw-he is able to play in all kinds of settings and sounds convincing in each of those cases. That was an Audio Fidelity issue. Since their logo is gone, I guess it's a "Spanish" issue. Is that a reissue of an original album then?

Up. Just wanted to heap some praise on the new RVG of Kirk's Work. Nice album to begin with, but I think the sound has positively improved Some of my favorites: We Free Kings is on top, with Rip Rig, Domino and Bright Moments next. 'Three for the Festival' is one of the baddest ass songs of all time!

Please UNDERSTAND, the recording biz as known here is imploding. Get what 'cha wanna. I guess. I have these, and I feel fortunate that I do! Its sad that anyone who discovers this music will never be able to dig deep because it won't be available. That's a real disappointment

Oh boy, Tokyo, Workshop and Newport are all OOP? What a drag. At least the It Club date still seems available. What is going on? I'm really surprised that Columbia allowed these to slip away.

Excellent date, along with these other Columbia live dates: Workshop, Tokyo and Newport '63 + '65.

Avant-Grease & Mixed-Meter Boogaloo: brainy stuff

I always pass on Turning Point. I think it's 'bout time i get it. Turning Point is badass. That's my favorite Smith album along with Think! which is almost right there next to it. -
I was just playing this the other day, and I concur with Penguin

Ornette's Of Human Feelings (Antilles) gets free and funky. I'm playing it now, and its getting down! Edited because when it comes to Ornette's Prime Time records, this one hardly ever gets mentioned, and its probably my favorite.

I also like Thinking of Home. Agreed, not his best, but certianly not the worst (hard to think of any bad ones off the top of my head, well BN at least). I was always struck by the fact that the bass player's name is Mickey Bass. I guess that was a calling, if I ever heard one.

Isn't that the Thompson Twins? I thought that was Thomas Dolby on the right

Blue Note/EMI/Capitol/Pacific Jazz Recommendations
AndrewHill replied to Guy Berger's topic in Recommendations
I've often thought that myself over the years. I really thought they'd have gotten around to it by now. Considering Blue Note's logic, my guess is that they'll RVG the Conn of Sonny's Crib before L and L. -
I thought we were trying to put you off?? Nope, it didn't work Well funny enough, I went to Half Price last night to get it (I have it on hold) and somebody dumped their Don Ellis collection there over the last couple of days (man, I love this store) so I ended up buying At Monterey (Pacific Jazz). The other Ellis titles were Live in 3 and 2/3 time (already own), Live in Montreaux, and the Connection. They also have the promos of some of the new Prestige RVG's for $6 bucks a piece (Kirk, Dameron and Haynes) and they had the new Bad Plus CD in the dollar bin. So needless to say, I'm picking up the Green in a couple of days when I replenish my funds. When I buy it, I'll report back and let you all know what I think of it.

Those covers are badass

Last Night: Don Ellis: At Monterey (PJ) The Bad Plus: Prog (Heads Up) This was in the dollar bin All for the tidy sum of $6

I think that's a wonderful sleeve!!!! MG Me too. There's 2 of us, think if we call Blue Note they'll reissue it? I also dig this one!

My first exposure to jazz was in junior high, when I joined the jazz club (I played in the concert band and it seemed to be a logical move) and I played bass clarinet and tenor sax there. We played pretty straight-forward stuff like Vince Guaraldi, but me and another dude in the club would have these wild-ass jams on our own, just two tenors and we had a blast. My mom bought me the popular jazz records at the time (early 80's) like Grover Washington Jr, Spyro Gyra and Chuck Mangione. Funny enough, I was watching ESPN Classic the other day and they showed a clip of Grover playing the National Anthem at the 1982 playoffs between the 76ers and the Celtics.

Concerning Last Exit, of the three titles I own [Last Exit (Enemy), Iron Path (Virgin Venture), and Koln (ITM)], they occasionally get bluesy, but not greasy. These are some badass albums nonetheless, and if you can find them, get 'em (Koln just reappeared in the UMS recently. Don't know about the other two.) -
I'm with you there. Altschul is a very underrated drummer. I think he's frickin' amazing on Braxton's Dortmund 1976. Other favorites where he appears are Bley's Ramblin' and Early Circle (under Corea's Name).

Awesome guys, thanks for the recommendations I'm going to pick it up tonight!
