  1. Wife has American Idol rewind on on the Fox Reality channel
  2. Saw this absurd thing on tv the other day
  3. Depending on how hard it is to obtain or how bad I want the cd, I usually limit myself to a budget of $30.
  4. Oh Yeah! That way, we can establish whether they were on acid or not!
  5. Candy cane shot glasses
  6. A couple of others: Trane's Blue Trane session to see whether John was sucking on a reed or a needle. Miles' Musings of Miles to see Pettiford playing drunk.
  7. Less than five years? Several of these were released last year!! The following were released in 2007 and are deleted now in 2008!! Horace Silver - You Gotta Take A Little Love Introducing Kenny Cox Frank Foster - Manhattan Fever Stan Kenton - The Compositions Of Dee Barton If that is the case, then I suspect that the 500 minimum sold quota still holds (maybe Kevin or someone on the inside can verify). But needless to say, the Foster and the Cox are extremely worthy sessions, and if you don't have them, consider picking them up. I can't comment on the rest.
  8. Yeah definitely, with the unfolding issue between Dorham and Taylor. I personally would have really like to have seen the Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants session, with Monk and Miles at each other's throats.
  9. Totally agree! As lone horn, I think he handles the front line quite well.
  10. Wife just surprised me with a late-coming package today: Hank Mobley's Dippin' RVG Edition
  11. Happy New Year everyone! Looking forward to new and rewarding music listening in 2009!
  12. Yeah, I have the TOCJ too, and the sound is quite excellent!
  13. I just picked up the RVG a few weeks ago and I've been really enjoying it. I also think Trudy Pitts (who I've never heard before) was burnin' on this one. I don't own anything else by Martino, but I would be very interested in hearing his other Prestige dates. The session as a whole (as Jim puts it) has no real agenda but the songs themselves have really strong themes and excellent soloing. I also really dig Martino's Montgomery-like delivery too.
  14. Agreed. The Blue Notes sound very much like the Miles Quintet with Shorter/Hancock/Carter/Williams. That was pointed out ealier in the string, but I wanted to also give my agreement, as there is no avoiding the reference to my ears. Agree too. I hear the exact same thing. The first track sounded like it could've come off ESP or Miles Smiles and others sound more like they're off Sorcerer.
  15. Favorite leader dates: Goin' Up Up Up The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard Breaking Point Ready for Freddie As sideman: Out to Lunch! Compulsion!!! Dialogue Components
  16. RIP Freddie. Thanks for all the great music.
  17. Yeah! We'd look at albums on the BN inner sleeves and wonder how to get hold of them. And the one we lusted after MOST, was "Rollin' with Leo". They were all listed in Schwann so there was no way anyone over here knew that'd never been issued. THE most frustrating thing! MG Yeah and you were probably just as frustrated with Back to the Tracks and Dimensions and Extensions BTW, the Rollin'with Leo cover is BADAZZ.
  18. This one shouldn't be overlooked either. Probably my favorite out of his three BN's, with excellent playing by all and strong themes. I have the Conn, so I probably won't upgrade unless the sound improves or there's extra material.
  19. Didn't know about this one...are they sleeved with the original artwork? I always like the RCA Sonny Rollins album covers. Mine is still on its way, but I believe the answer is yes, like mini-LPs. My Rollins and Byrds boxes arrived yesterday, the day after Christmas, and I can confirm that they are mini-LPs. Three of the five Rollins discs include bonus tracks. Cool! Gotta get this set
