What album turned G. Benson over to the dark side?
AndrewHill replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Artists
And all this time I thought 'Give Me the Night' was by The Commodores . I must've heard that song at least twice a day every day back in 1980-1, and it kinda grew on me (I was 10 at the time in Florida) having no idea who George Benson was. I also remember hearing Breezin' on the radio too, when I was a little bit younger. Although I own none of his leader dates, and therefore will not participate in this poll, I will say that I enjoy his sideman contributions quite a bit, especially on Taru, Miles in the Sky and Reach Out (if memory serves me correctly) and will leave it at that -_- -
Sun Ra-A Night in East Berlin/My Brothers the Wind and Sun no. 9-Leo ...after realizing that another disc I have by Ra, A Night in East Berlin on Leo is not the same as the one above!
-
Ok, to answer my own question I went and bought the other A Night in East Berlin/My Brother the Wind and it has a completely different set list than the other A Night in East Berlin. In fact, I can't even find a listing for the 1987 cd anywhere (at least at Amazon). So why would Leo name two cd's so similarly yet they are different?
-
Well, I'm very fond of that roarin' hard bop session $28 (£14) is not an unusual price here, but it probably sounds a lot worse on your side of the pond Grab the Charly Blakey/Roach "The Hard Drive" it sounds great, includes Hard Drive album AND the "MAX" album (with Mobley) and the sound is swell. Amazon sellers have it as cheap as $4.02. Didn't know about that, thanks!

Some Sun Ra confusion: I just noticed that there are two Sun Ra cds, 'A Night in East Berlin' discs on Leo floating around. I have one that's titled 'A Night in East Berlin' from 1987, with four tracks: 'A Night in East Berlin,' 'Images,' 'Love in Our Space,' and 'Space is the Place.'. Then tonight I notice that there's another one that has a similar cover to mine (mine's white, the other one is black, but basically the same design.) with a similar title: A Night in East Berlin/ My Brothers the Wind and Sun no. 9, from 1996, with 8 tracks that are completely different from mine. The date of recording is the same though: 6/28/86. Are these two completely different albums from the same night? If so, should I run out and grab that 8 track disc? Thanks, HG Edit: correction. Only A Night in East Berlin is confrimed to be rec. on 6/28/86. It says on the back of the '87 cd that the other three cuts are not known where and when they were recorded.

Woody Shaw-Rosewood-Columbia/Legacy Miles Davis-Live in Tokyo-Sony/Legacy Trying to pick the Columbia's that I've been sittin' on for awhile. Anyone wanna sell a copy of Bob Brookmeyer and Friends?
-
If anyone is interested, The Miles Davis Story is on right now (just got home) on Ovation TV and will be on again at 11pm.
-
my source at SONY says that the Ellington is to be released on July 18 If you mean the box set, then we're talking about two different things. What I mean are the midprice Columbia/Legacy cd's that have been reduced to budget, such as Woody Shaw's Rosewood, Miles' Berlin, Antibes etc.

Lemon Pepper Chicken, rice and corn.

Just called my local Borders (there's two) and one doesn't have any of the budget Columbia's but the other one does, but they're not the jazz titles. They said they're getting stuff every week, so I have to check back. Anybody else having the same problem or has anyone scored a budget Columbia/Sony jazz cd in a brick and mortor yet?

I'm on it!

Cool footage. I like the big 'ear' on the wall in the Warsaw clip.

There's a Half Price near me which is a gold mine for rarites, usually at $5.98. Well, a couple of years a ago a widow brought in her late husband's cd collection: 3 solid boxes of avant garde jazz. That nearly put me out around a couple hundred once all was said and done. Some highlights were theAlbert Mangelsdorff 'Originals' MPS boxes, a ton of Cecil Taylors, Braxtons, including Braxton House releases, a ton of Hatology's, FMP's and so on. Other scores over the years at second-hand stores: Curtis Amy/Dupree Bolton-Katanga! for $5 The Freddie Hubbard/Woody Shaw Sessions for $6 A bunch of VEE's in the $8 range, inlcuding Art Blakey (Joe Gordon), Art Farmer (Listen to...), Modern Jazz Society, Ray Brown (Bass Hit) etc. Ornette's Soapsuds Soapsuds for $2.50 William Parker's Peach Orchard for $1 Air Airlore for $6 James Blood Ulmer's Tales of Captain Black for $6 Birth of the Third Stream for $7 Sonny Sharrock's Guitar for $6 Andrew Hill But Not Farewell for $2.50

Can anyone recommend the Bethlehem date, 'Hard Drive'? I have an opportunity to pick the Avenue/Beth Archives edition from 1999, but they're asking $28 for it. Amazon sellers want over $70 for it. Is this date worth $28 smackers? Or should I keep on waiting for a cheaper one (have never seen one for sale yet). Thanks, HG

HB RFW! Love his ESP's. Unfortunately, besides an appearance on Brotz's 'Alarm,' that's all I got. But I'm always looking for more. Can anyone recommend his America date? At least that still seems available. Here's a clip of Frank with Brotz's ensemble at Vision Fest in 1985:

So, I was looking at you tube clips on Tommy Dorsey...
