I've been wanting to do the same thing for ages, but I just haven't had the courage (or space and time) to do it. I look forward to seeing how this works for you, Moose. It's probably what I'll do when I move in the fall.

I had a pet rat about 10 years ago named Gilda (after the Rita Hayworth movie). She was a cool pet. She loved Cheetos. But, my stupid roomate decided to be "snake guy" and bought some pythons and boa constrictors. I think it traumatized her seeing members of her species being consumed by those stupid snakes. She passed on soon after (and no, I didn't let him feed her to the snakes - he did ask though)

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Wow! A year already. I remember that morning logging into the BNBB and seeing the sections of the site disappearing before my eyes. Thank you Jim, Joe, Randy, Use3D for giving us this great home away from home! I really appreciate the people that I have met here. You have been great friends and have had a huge influence on my thinking. Cheers!

no thread on The Passion yet???
AfricaBrass replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Thanks Lon! I guess that's one thing I'm wrestling with. I can't believe God would be so exclusionary also. I keep thinking of George Bernard Shaw's "Man and Superman". The story of Don Juan in Hell really applies to me. Just as he ended up in Hell because he enjoyed the company there better, I think this applies to me also. -
Holy Crap! We missed Jim R’s Birthday!

AfricaBrass replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've been really struggling lately. I keep obsessing on the thought that according to my faith, my son could end up in Hell. If that happened, there is no way I could hold nothing but hatred towards God. Maybe it's time to read some of the Nag Hammidi texts again... -
I do the same thing. I find it really difficult to get rid of music. I'm also weary of getting rid of stuff because I have done that in the past and later regretted it. When I really got into jazz about 12 years ago, I thought rock music was worthless, so I sold most of my rock CDs so I could buy jazz. I've been buying back those same rock CDs for years now. I probably have replaced 95% of what I sold (and I sold a LOT of CDs).

Who doesn't own any Mosaic sets?
AfricaBrass replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I still keep my CDs in the box set, which I think is my downfall. In the future, when I have the space, my Mosaic CDs will be mixed in with the regular population. I don't have any regrets about buying the Mosaic sets, but I just found that it's rare when they release a set that I haven't already bought a good part of already. I've really wanted the Tristano Mosaic forever, but I already have everything on it that has been released outside the set. One thing that I've gotten into doing is making CDRs of my Mosaic sets with the albums in their original orders. I find that's my favorite way of listening to the sets. -
Jeez, this must be the norm for wives of jazz collectors! We are in the midst of cleaning out some closets and a storage room and I'm getting the "why the hell do you have to have so many records, I bet you could make some serious money" speech. Admittedly they take up a lot of room, but they just don't get it... You have my sympathies! I hate when she throws out the.... "You have 3000 CDs. If you paid $10 for each of them...." Aaaargh!

How about a compromise.... You'll sell a CD (or x CDs) for every pair of shoes SHE sells. You must be psychic!

Who doesn't own any Mosaic sets?
AfricaBrass replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I'll admit that I've been a huge Mosaic addict in the past. but, I haven't purchased any in over two years. I think they're beautiful sets with wonderful music, but they're just too rich for my blood these days, plus, I just don't listen to box sets as much as I listen to individual CDs. I used to be obsessed with buying Mosaic sets, but since I let it go, I don't really feel like I'm missing out. Heck, I've got enough to listen to anyway. -
Sounds like a reasonable request by your wife. Have you heard of CD-burners? Good point, Tjazz. It's weird, I've tried going through my CDs and pulling ones to sell, but I always seem to find a good excuse (to me) to keep it. The idea of selling one's collection for the family good is a noble one, but I'm afraid of setting a precedent of selling my stuff. What if (in the future) my wife wants something for the house, and she comes after me to start selling my CDs, guitars, etc...? That would be bad.

What is the opinion of the members on this board..
AfricaBrass replied to Jazz Groove's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yeah, RDK, sharingthegroove can be slow. I haven't tried newsgroups for shn files. You're right about the amazing sound quality of a lot of these shows. Some of the sets are amazing too. One of my favorites was a 26 disc set of the complete Bob Dylan recordings from 1966. I remember searching for years to find some of this stuff in the past. -
One more thing, I'm very happy with the sound. It's a LOT better than the Phillips mp3 disc player I had before.

I purchased the same machine a month ago. I also got the 40gb Nomad Zen. I paid $250 at Best Buy, plus another $40 for an extended warranty. I read on the Head-Fi forum that Creative's warranty isn't very good, and the extended warranty was highly recommended. I don't know how the unit will hold up over time, but with the extended warranty, I've got 3 or 4 years. I'm incredibly HAPPY with this machine. I know it's a little bigger than the IPod, but it's also half the price (for the 40gb model). It's really a kick taking hundreds of albums with me everywhere I go. I've been encoding a 160k and my estimate is that I'll be able to get a little over 500 CDs on the player.

Thanks for the tip, RDK! I haven't downloaded those yet. I'm busy working on some huge Grateful Dead downloads at bt.etree.org - I wish I could download more. I've been trying really hard to upload more than I download, so sometimes I'm stuck uploading only. I did pick up a cool Don Cherry from 1965 a couple months ago. Thanks for bringing this thread back up! -

I am so grateful that the link to sharingthegroove.com was posted here. I have found stuff that I had been looking for for years. They seem to try hard to respect copyrights over there. I know that live shows aren't authorized in the first place, but at least they don't allow any commercially released material to be posted. I have downloaded some great Coltrane and Miles, etc... -
Good question! I have been going through my collection with pruning in mind. I've been able to select about 10% of my music, but beyond that, I really don't think I could get rid of much. I know that I don't need EVERY Mobley Blue Note title, but I just can't imagine getting rid of any of them. On the other hand, I think I'm finally going to unload about 80% of my vinyl. I just don't have the time to sit and listen to LPs anymore (I have around 4000 albums now, so I don't feel I'd be hurting to get rid of that amount. B3-er, I like your attitude! If I knew when I was going to be ending my tour of duty here on Earth, I'd be happy to just give away my collection to those who'd enjoy it. I know my family would never sell it for what it's worth anyway. My hope is that my son and his offspring will appreciate music as much as I do.

My wife wants me to sell many of my CDs so we could put a down payment on a house. Even though I purchased most of my music before I was married, I think she resents it. At least once a month, I get the "If you sold your CDs, you'd have $(insert large amount here). I would have never considered getting rid of music before, but now I'm in the place where I just don't have the space for it. I figure about half of my CDs are still in boxes from my move a year ago.
