Thanks for the name, Dan! I've never seen him anywhere else either, but added some tasty stuff. His tone is different than what I'm used to hearing. I almost wonder if he was playing a Fender. His execution wasn't perfect, but it was good. I find that I've really come to like LD's early sixties recordings quite a bit. I just wish Big John had more room to stretch out. :rsmile:

When her album first came out, I was going to pick it up. I had heard her on Charlie Hunter's album and thought she had a nice voice, and I wanted to support Blue Note. The album also was priced at $7.99 for a while, so I figured I would give it a shot. I just never got around to it. Now, I don't have anything against her, but I have no desire to pick it up. There are so many other albums I'd rather spend my money on. I hate what happened at Blue Note after the success of this record, and I'm pretty much done with them, except for Conns and stuff from Osby, Moran and Harris. My days of buying almost everything they put out are over.

What have you been diggin' recently?
AfricaBrass replied to Templejazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm glad you've been digging the Dead, Lon! Jazzwise, I'm with Sal, I've really been getting into Sonny Rollins since we had him as the album of the week. I've never really gotten into him like I should, but that album really did it for me. My main musical squeeze lately has been the collected works of Jimmy Bryant and Speedy West. If you're unfamiliar with these guys, they were an amazing pair. Out of this world guitar playing paired with steel guitar (non-pedal variety). They recorded together in the 50's on Capital. I have the box set on Bear Family and I've also been digging a compilation of their performances on the Tennessee Ernie Ford show from the early fifties that Jasmine released. My 22 month old son wants me to play that cd over and over. I happily oblige. :rsmile: -
I just heard this album for the first time yesterday and I was impressed. I hadn't heard any of his Argo recordings before. All I can say is, if Dan likes the other two Argo's better, they must be really good. Unfortunately, I don't have the cd with me right now, so I can't tell you his name, but I dig the guitarist on the session. I realize he isn't Grant Green, but I dig his style, it's really funky. So far, my favorite track is Signifyin', but I need to listen a few more times before I say more. Thanks Dan! :rsmile:

That's great! You can't go wrong with 1973 Dead. That was such a great time for them. I love the Dark Star > Eyes of the World on DP14.

Modern Rock - what do you like???
AfricaBrass replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I didn't want to like Radiohead at first, they were those whiny guys who sang "Creep", but OK Computer just floored me. I used to hear it all the time at Tower Records and it really got under my skin. Now I have all their albums. To me, they are the Pink Floyd of these times. I dig their last couple albums, though not as much as OK Computer. :rsmile: -
My vote goes to Otis Redding. I had never explored his recordings until a couple years ago. Wow! I was missing out. Though many of the already listed artists are up there for me too! Especially Marvin. His Let's Get it On definitely has the SOUL and the groove. Here My Dear is the coolest divorce settlement ever. Ouch!

Good luck on your thesis! I wish I could go to Greece too! See you in the fall. :rsmile:

Modern Rock - what do you like???

Mnytime, No offense here. Those Gallagher bros. were pretty stupid when they claimed they were as good as the Beatles. I think Liam thought he was the second coming of John Lennon. For me, it was just nice to hear that kind of music on the radio again. There isn't a lot of stuff on the radio anymore that does anything for me. :rsmile: -
Modern Rock - what do you like???
AfricaBrass replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I know the Crowes were derivative, but I still think they made some enjoyable music. As for Oasis, I agree they knew their Beatles well and they are pretty annoying people, but some of their songs were pretty good. I didn't like them when they were popular, but I really liked their Standing on the Shoulders of Giants cd from a couple years ago. The reviews weren't great for it, but I dug it. -
Do People With Big Heads Scare You?

I'm more afraid of people with Giant foam heads who talk like Andy Griffith. Jimmy, save me! -

Parkertown, My favorite track off Amorica is Wiser Time. I think this is one of those albums were almost every track is good. I really think this album was their peak. The songs are good and the production is really good too. If you don't have it, I hope you give it a chance sometime. The cover is funky. My wife looks at me funny when I play this cd. I'm just glad the photo isn't of a dude. Ooof!! -
ROBOTICONS RULE! ROBOTICONS RULE! ROBOTICONS RULE!
AfricaBrass replied to JSngry's topic in Forums Discussion
Thanks Jim! As one who has always been happy to apply a Roboticon when possible, I thank you for the new ones. They're nice and twisted. I like the oil can in the special place Roboticon. It looks like its medication just kicked in. I wish there was a "What are you smoking?/Are you high?" Roboticon for outrageous statements. :rsmile: -

I used to dig the Black Crowes too, Parkertown. I even dug their super-stoner phase. I thought they were great until around '97 when they fired their lead guitarist, Marc Ford. Their album that followed, By Your Side, really seemed like a huge sellout to me. Their album, Amorica, was my favorite. :rsmile: -

Bfrank, I dig the new Supergrass album. It really grew on me. They are a great band. Impossible, I believe Stereolab is in the studio now. I read on their website recently that they were beginning to record again after the death of Mary Hanson. I love that group. They were my band of the '90s. I like a bunch of the groups you guys have mentioned. Here's a couple that haven't been mentioned yet. Beachwood Sparks - I love their first album. Their other two are okay, but the first one is great. Brendan Benson - His Lapalco album has been a big favorite of mine. The last Wondermints album is good if you're a fan of the Beach Boys. The High Llamas were another big favorite of mine in the '90s. Their Hawaii album really pulled off the Beach Boys Smile era stuff. I still like their Gideon Gaye album the best. I know these guys are derided by some, but the last Mother Hips album, The Green Hills of Earth, is one I really liked. I also like some of the alt-country stuff. Wilco's Summer Teeth has been a favorite (though it's not as country as their earlier stuff was). I know I'm forgetting a bunch, but here's a few I like. :rsmile: -
John Oswald did a great job with Grayfolded. I don't listen to it much, but it's impressive. I'd really like to hear his Plunderphonics cd. I've read a lot about it, but haven't heard it. I guess he really pissed off the record companies with that one. :rsmile: BTW - if any of you download from gdlive.com, they just added a bunch of new shows.

This is a great album. I'm really glad you picked it! I look forward to listening to some Satchmo next week. :rsmile: :rsmile:

Welcome to the board, David! I really dig Sam Rivers. I'll check out the samples. :rsmile:

Thanks Joe (and Big Al too)! The cat is Captain Kirk with a cat head. I've always had a thing about putting animal heads on people. It's fun. I figured it was getting annoying for you guys so I switched to my idol (Fat Albert) after Joe posted a picture of him for me. Man, I wish I could play the radiator like ol' Fat Albert. Maybe I'll continue the adventures of James T. Cat someday. I had the Kenny G in Hell avatar on the AAJ board for a little while, but when someone kindly took the time to tell me that there are better soprano players than the G-dude, I took it off. Here's a couple of my favorites: Brittney Dog (Brittney Spears + a dog) & James T Cat

Album of the week: The Quintet - At Massey Hall
AfricaBrass replied to AfricaBrass's topic in Album Of The Week
Yeah, that is a great thread. Jim really said it all. I've tried to avoid listening to the cd again until this week. :rsmile: -
I've been listening constantly to the new expanded edition of Waylon Jennings' Waylon Live. I just can't get it out of my head. :rsmile:
-
Thanks Scott! I've been having the same problem. Now everything's fine again. I'm embarrassed, though. I really should know these things, this is what I do for a living. It's like a horn player playing an E sharp. Ooof!

I just want to mention that 2 year olds love the album too! My son was having a great time listening to the cd in the car. He was boppin' his head (in time). Maybe he'll get the jazz bug early! :rsmile:
