Happy Birthday!

A friend of mine agreed to shoot some camera footage of a concert for Teena Marie. After not getting paid for all of his work, my friend held the footage. Teena Marie's people called him to meet and when he went they tried to act all gangster and were physically intimidating him. My friend said, "Look, all I want is to be paid what we agreed to." Luckily he had his girlfriend with him, he didn't bring the footage, and managed to leave. He said had he been alone, he's not sure what they would have done. Eventually, they reluctantly gave him a small amount of money (not the amount agreed to) and my friend just gave them the footage to sever ties. "Crack heads," he explained.

Many thanks to Marcus Oliveira for the dazzlingly varied array of tunes. I thoroughly enjoy every track on this one! Also thanks to Big Al for the distribution! 1. Azymuth? Reminds me a bit of Ramsey Lewis too. A funky little groove, exactly the type of electric piano sound I like best. Dig the vocals as well. 2. Stanley Turrentine? Familiar tune, but I can't place it. I may have this. Great stuff. 3. Don't know where to begin as far as guesses, but I like it quite a bit. 4. Good good good. 5. Holy smokes, what a track!!! Reminds me of my favorite moments of Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter, but I'm not sure. 6. Lionel Hampton? For some reason I thought this sounded like a vibes player from the earlier school. 7. When I hear this bass sound, I immediately think Jaco or Stanley Clarke. Then again, this sounds like it could be Azymuth too. Really dig the percussion! 8. DAMN! This is my favorite track on the BFT. Top shelf. Again, hints of my favorite Lee and Wayne songs. I want to say Andrew Hill on piano... 9. "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing," I recognize. Whoever is tickling the keys is beyond my ability to identify. The bass sound seems out of place, somehow? Cool nonetheless. 10. Wow, love this bass player, whoever he/she is. Killer track. More from the top tier. 11. I really dig the spooky, moody piano here! Broad range of different sounds across this BFT, very well done Marcus. 12. Baden Powell maybe? Oh wait, then there's a groovy little piano. The flute and strings are so-so, but I like the overall composition. Am I the only one to find the short little female vocal toward the end funny? 13. Bass grabs me from the jump, I'm feelin' the composition before it starts. Then that piano drops in with the drums and congas and...well...DAMN! Second favorite next to Track 8. 14. Smooth and relaxing without being cheesey. Subtle, understated, simple, elegant, serious. 15. I'm guessing this is a present-day singer for some reason. A nice finish to a fine disc.

Don't worry! If there's Hell below...

Disc received today--just popped it in and track one is living up to the hype! Thanks again Marcoliv and Big Al! Will post my responses soon...

We suck. That German team didn't even qualify for the Olympics. I think we should send our defending NBA Champion team. The Pistons would chew all these teams up and spit them out. Instead we send a young team that doesn't ever play together to face teams that play together all year.

That's the only way I'd heard of him. Thanks again.

Thanks Mike! Wouldn't happen to know what album that comes from, would you?

I have a fantastic song on a bootleg compilation by a Billy Brooks called "40 Days." I wonder if it is the drummer or the trumpet player...? Either way, it is one of my favorite songs, period.

Thanks marcoliv and Big Al!

Ordered from Dusty (bastards!) lately?
Noj replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous Music
MAJOR fan here, dude. You DO have EXTENSIONS OF A MAN. domn't you? errrr, no.... We'll save that one for the next order from the bastards. Just recently I was very happy to find Everything Is Everything had been reissued--snapped it up immediately! I'll be getting Extensions Of A Man too... My credit card debt is spiralling out of control, otherwise I'd be ordering from the bastards tonight. I must try to control myself. -
I recently added Emergency and Turn It Over to my collection. I dig the raucous playing by Tony, it's McLaughlin that tests my patience at times. Also dig the funky electric Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, BWTFDIK?

Hehehe...after reading everyone else's comments and now knowing what I know about Nate's selections, my guesses are pretty funny.

BFT#14 Compiled by Nate Dorward Thanks Nate! I have played this numerous times over the last week or so. I do not know any of the tracks for certain, but there are definitely tracks whose album I'd like to have! I really don't have an excuse for being so late to the discussion...as usual I have not read any responses before making my own feeble attempts to guess... 1. Stuff Smith? 2. A complex two minutes here...fascinating transitions to unexpected sounds, really stretching the ideas. Is this Mal Waldron, who I haven't heard? 3. A beautiful song, would I be wrong to suggest this is a 'lament?' Anyway, absolutely great. When the sounds come together at 1:15 remaining I get goosebumps. Late Duke Ellington? 4. Eric Dolphy? A wild ride here, it grew on me after a few listens. 5. Gato Barbieri? Great stuff, really dig it. 6. Coleman Hawkins? 7. Far out, difficult to wrap my ears around this one. This is a busy composition with many ideas being worked out by all involved. The sax meanders playfully up and down over the rhythm section that milks the furious pace for all its worth. The sounds seem to avoid pattern as the song progresses. The pianist freely fires off his sporadic notes within that framework, showing off some positively insane chops. Not sure who this might be. Latter days Andrew Hill? 8. The perfect relief from the previous track, just what the doctor ordered. This is the kind of piano playing that brought my ears to jazz. Horace Silver? 9. John Klemmer? 10. Damn, that bass player laid down one mean groove for everybody, and everybody followed suit. Hard as a coffin nail, I feel tough just listening to this. The sax makes me think Gato Barbieri again. 11. I like the transitions on this disc. Amazing piano here, both hands are equally dexterous. Nice brushwork on the drums, I enjoy that somewhat 'breathing' sound so much. No guess. 12. Monk? 13. Herbie Hancock? 14. Kenny Burrell? Again, thank you for the tastefully compiled disc Nate. It has gotten a ton of play time since its arrival.

I dig that David Newman too, kh. Also, Roy Ayers Ubiquity - Live At The Montreux Jazz Festival--falls in a transitional period between the more jazz-oriented early Roy to the latter funk/r&b-leaning Roy. Includes a cool version of "In A Silent Way."

The Bottle See that black boy over there, runnin' scared his ol' man's in a bottle He done quit his 9 to 5 to drink full time so now he's livin' in the bottle See that black boy over there, runnin' scared his ol' man's got a problem and it's a bad one He done pawned off damn near everything, his ol' woman's weddin' ring for a bottle And don't you think it's a crime when time after time, people in the bottle See that sista, sho was fine 'fore she started drinkin' wine from the bottle Said her ol' man committed a crime he's doin' time, now she's hangin' in the bottle Out there on the avenue, all by herself sho' need help from the bottle We saw how preacherman tried to help her, how she cussed him out and hit him in the head with the bottle And don't you think it's a crime when time after time, people in the bottle See that gent in the wrinkled suit he done damn near blown his cool for the bottle He was a doctor helpin' young girls along if they weren't too far gone to have problems Defenders of the dollar eagle said "What you're doin', man, ain't legal," now he's in the bottle and now we watch him everyday he's tryin' to chase the pigeons away from the bottle They turn to me, they said to me Gil now "Don't you think it's a crime When time after time, friends of mine, in the bottle?" --Gil-Scott Heron -
