Was Richard Grossman mentioned? I thought his trios on Hat Hut were very interesting.

I see Randy Peterson is on a recent piano trio date led by Rema Hasumi: https://www.ruweh.com/collections/frontpage/products/rema-hasumi-billows-of-blue The label's site also has an interview with him: https://www.ruweh.com/blogs/news/randy-peterson-interview

Oh wow, Randy Peterson, have not heard about him for a long time. What a drummer! His playing on Mat Maneri's trio discs on Leo is fantastic.

Regarding Formanek quartet with Malaby, I will check it out on Spotify. Wanted to catch up with what Malaby is up to. I remember he had a very strong trio disc way back when, 15 years ago or something. And then everything I've heard by him afterwards was not that interesting, so I stopped following. But I am not a fan of Ches Smith and Kris Davis either, so my expectations for Formanek disc are not that high.

New Barre Phillips solo is a good one. More mellow and melodious than his previous (8!) solo records. Baby Sommer is great, one of my favorite drummers. One of my favorite musicians, actually. I've been listening to his solo "Dedications" (on Intakt) a lot lately.

Well, this is more about trying to come up with a sustainable income model for creative musicians, rather than providing listeners with bargain deals on music.

I agree. I am not the biggest AEoC fan in general, but to my ears their later stuff is markedly worse than earlier. And Lester Bowie's Brass Band... eh.

Nice price, although none of the AEC ECM releases are that good, IMHO. As far as I am concerned, with AEC the earlier - the better.

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
Д.Д. replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
I agree. Widmann is good. Overall, there are a lot of excellent composers around these days (or perhaps as many as always, it is just that their music is recorded more often). Listening to Morton Feldman piano works / Ilic. I have heard quite a few versions of "For Bunita Marcus", but keep returning to this one for whatever reason. -

Yes, this one is good, although perhaps too reliant on catchy hooks. Listening to Dusapin quartets 6 & 7 by Arditti SQ. Great. -

Loks like an ID photo to me, but mug shot is a possibility - he had problems with US authorities (nothing to do with music) that led to his fleeing to Mexico. -

Yes, she's great. Was planning to listen to some Xenakis, but will listen to this one now, Xenakis later. -
And there is Strings with Evan Parker (EMANEM)

Scott Fields - Burning in Water, Drowning in Flame (2015). Excellent solo acoustic guitar release. Perhaps the best I've heard from Mr. Fields. Bandcamp for this release: https://newatlantisrecords.bandcamp.com/album/burning-in-water-drowning-in-flame

This one is not available on Spotify, although most of hatarts are. I understand that Corbett vs. Dempsey acquired the rights to all the McPhee HatHut recordings, so I guess we will see it released eventually.
-
Bad Shank - The Lost Cathedral.

Bandcamp "special" on Joe McPhee: https://daily.bandcamp.com/2018/08/21/joe-mcphee-discography-guide/?utm_source=notification . What a musician!

Well, Spotify (or Apple, or amazon prime) is your friend. Saved me a lot of money.

Flurin, knowing a bit about your tastes, I don't think you will like it. It's too similar to Old and New Dreams - to a point of intentional copy (drums sound is very Blackwell, and Redman plays a lot of his father's licks), but the writing is definitely not on the same level. Well played, of course, but very safe. Sounds quite contrived and forced to me.

The disc is merely OK (admittedly, I did not get to the end yet). A lot of the music sounds like going through the motions. I also didn't like Ches Smith's playing. He plays too much with too few ideas and with this ugly boomy drums sound (IMHO, of course). Does not fit the sound pallet. And his persistent falling back on steady beat is annoying. Overall, the combination of personalities is not that good a match, although I would probably be interested in hearing a duo of Parker and Taborn. Not sure about Mr. Smith, but there is definitely better stuff available from Parker, Holland and Taborn. Regarding hard leftists in Western Europe, I really wish they shared my experience of staying in a line for one hour to buy one loaf of bread in Moscow in 1980s. I definitely acknowledge the imperfections of the capitalist system, and they can and should be managed and corrected, but socialism (or communism) is really not the way. I see pampered starry eyed students here in Vienna with barely coherent leftist ideas - this is understandable and sort of cute. But when somebody in his 70s is still there, I have less understanding for this.
