  1. yeah, outstanding solo performance.
  2. things that don't need to exist for $433, Alex...
  3. ah damn, that's really sad news!!!
  4. yeah, agree. The Belgrave was later issued by him on his own Gem Eye label, so I assume he took the masters and that's why the music wasn't included. That one is a very good record. As for Black Jazz, the only ones that spoke to me were the Calvin Keys and the Henry Franklins, although even then not enough to shell out for nice vinyl copies.
  5. I've never really gotten into most Tribe stuff but that boxed set is kinda cool (even if it's missing two Tribe releases).
  6. Coltrane -- Expression -- (Impulse orange/black stereo)
  7. my Liberty copy of Out To Lunch notes that "Eric Dolphy performs by courtesy of FM Records" on the back slick. He was signed to Fred Miles and Conversations was the prior release. Iron Man (Douglas) and of course Last Date came out after Dolphy's departure.
  8. I recall when I worked in a bookstore after college being called a "bebopper" (pejoratively) by the owner when I was playing the Byron Allen ESP CD on the store stereo.
  9. Steve Swallow seems like a really nice guy. Never seen him play, alas.
  10. Probably a holding company of some sort.
  11. it's going to be hard to fill that space for a while. However, empty spaces get landlords tax breaks that occupied ones do not. most property over there is owned by Dezer Properties, notoriously connected to the current president. Do the math.

  13. ditto!
  14. yes. I'm actually surprised that others have had issues, but then again pressing plants have been lousy of late.
  15. A lot of these landlords are actually mega-conglomerates that own tons of properties under various holding/shell companies. We're not talking about the single guy that owns my building in Brooklyn and has a blues band jamming in the basement (at least before the pandemic). These companies' goal is to make tons of money, and they could continue to do so even if the Jazz Standard & Blue Smoke can't operate normally for a year or two.
  16. Exactly. It's terrible. Jazz Standard was one of a number of places I really enjoyed going in the "before time," food was good and the music and sound were often excellent. The loss of places like this, and the fact that NYC is still siding with landlords keeping properties empty as "investments" and tax breaks, shrinking availability of artists' spaces, etc., is one reason why I'm leaving the city in the near term.
  17. yeah, gutted here as well. Though we were not always on the same page politically I found her to be a warm and generous person.
  18. My bad and bad eyes, thanks!
  19. Sad news to report: multi-instrumentalist Zusaan Kali Fasteau (Sea Ensemble, Archie Shepp, many of her own configurations) died on Nov. 20, 2020 at age 73. Knew her a bit through the scene and saw her perform many times. Her CDs on the Flying Note label are varied and often superb. Completely individual personality and a creative wizard, she will be missed. https://ssqfuneralhome.com/tribute/details/2618/Zusaan-Fasteau/obituary.html
  20. I've seen Robinson play a number of times -- with Muhal, Warren Smith, J.D. Parran, and others. Fantastic musician that rarely gets his due.
  21. Sad to report that the great Danish trumpeter Allan Botchinsky passed on Nov. 26 at 80. He worked with, among others, Sahib Shihab, Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, Oscar Pettiford, the Jazz Quintet-60 and Radiojazzgruppen. 22. Serge Ermoll's Free Kata -- The New Language of Music, vol. 1 -- (Free Kata self-released)
  23. oh yeah, I like that one a lot!
  24. Lowell Davidson -- Trio -- (ESP) dusting off an old favorite.
