  1. Yeah, I wish there was a searchable OCR'ed image database containing each issue of Down Beat. But, as an archivist by trade, I can tell you that that would be extremely expensive and garner almost no profits, and such initiatives are wholly married to the powers that be -- so while a company or institution may support it for a while, as soon as they don't, the whole thing goes kaput.
  2. yeah, I liked the Strand fine until I learned some things about their business practices and now they do not get my patronage.
  3. 107 ! Damn, what a life.
  4. Haha yep. Spend your money at Spoonbill & Sugartown in Brooklyn, who are struggling to make their $14,000 monthly rent and are among the last standing independent bookstores in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint area.
  5. yeah, Strand is fucking people over. I think she's full of shit. Pushed out a lot of smaller bookstores in that area of NYC as well (or at least contributed to pushing them out) 20+ years ago.
  6. as far as NoBusiness goes, the Guy is probably strong and the Bailey/Takagi looks pretty interesting. I also am curious about the Toyozumi-Gustafsson disc; S.T. is a wonderful drummer.
  7. yeah, I have those on LP, all four albums are super.
  8. yeah, Dickerson was my first thought as well. Maybe Campbell has other info, don't have access to it at the moment.
  9. probably they haven't finished the graphic design for the new version. I see that their item text is cribbed from the Dusty Groove website, probably referencing the old CD version as well. Sheesh.
  10. Well technically the moderators are the E.C. so we will have to defer to them.
  11. When was this recorded? Curious to hear it.
  12. Braxton would be great to have/hear everything, sadly quite likely impossible for me. I feel lucky to have spent time with him and seen him live many times, in lieu of a full discography.
  13. Yep. Luckily was able to obtain a lot of the more obscure Lacy LPs before they got outrageously expensive.
  14. As far as issued recordings go, my namesake (Clifford Thornton), Alan Shorter, Bill Dixon, Kees Hazevoet, and Ric Colbeck, and almost complete on Frank Wright (just a couple of Penck CDs I need to get). Fairly close on Burton Greene, Charles Gayle and Glenn Spearman. I think I have several holes with Sunny Murray to plug but I'll get to them eventually. Ayler is nearly done although I think I'm missing a couple of bootlegs. Lacy has a few LP holes but the CD era is a bit less "complete" (this is an issue w/ Cecil as well -- all the LPs, but later CDs not nearly enough). Thankfully and hopefully there's time to do this -- I never think of it as a particular project, but something that just happens over time.
  15. It's just a sprinkle. A tinkle, perhaps.
  16. Saw him do a solo concert recently in upstate New York, the day after Gary Peacock died -- tremendous!!!
  17. Dusty Groove will be selling it.
  18. yeah, he was. Worked with Karl Berger, Sunny Murray, Grachan Moncur III et al. in the mid-60s.
  19. Brilliant musician indeed, sad to see him go. Have a number of his improv LPs, all excellent, as well as his work with Brötzmann a.o.. But I need to get that Fred Anderson disc!
  20. ditto. I went to my share of packed rock/punk shows, all in smaller venues, but that takes the cake.
  21. at least with hardcore and no-wave, most of the best stuff is confined to 7" or 45 rpm 12" formats. Goes by in a flash.
