  1. Richard Williams, the trumpeter, allegedly attacked saxophonist Frank Smith at Slugs', breaking the latter's horn.
  2. That's awesome about Jorma! Tal must've been a heck of a date, too.
  3. I've seen The Sentinel a couple of times and it's an excellent film.
  4. I've never felt like he was a particularly public person outside of the concert realm, so I'm not surprised by that. Still, yes, absofuckinglutely weird scene.
  5. The Fred Anderson I recall being kinda tough to track down these days. It's good, and it's too bad there was no vol. 2.
  6. Yeah, what I've heard of that session is very good and with fabulous sonics. That doesn't mean it isn't a boot, which I am almost certain it is. speaking of Don, caught Neneh Cherry last night here in NYC. I'd never seen her before, and the show was excellent. I never saw Don, but her stage mannerisms/vibe certainly reminded me a lot of what I *think* Don was like. She played "Black Elk Speaks" on the BBC a while back and it is an incredible tune. Hope the whole thing gets issued someday (which she hinted it might).
  7. glad the audio survived via the Beeb. too bad Albert Ayler's BBC broadcast wasn't as lucky.
  8. Yeah, this situation seems quite bizarre though UCLA health benefits -- like, who knows, not all institutions have great health coverage, especially for the aged. I could totally see their claims getting denied and, while dealing with fraud, it being too much to follow up on and get figured out. Not to mention the fact that very sane and well off people go bankrupt in this country because of health care costs.
  9. I interviewed him some years ago when he was living in Switzerland. I'm not sure what he's up to now. Fantastic player in my opinion.
  10. I was so sad to learn this the other day during my travels westward. Never met him, sad to say, but his contributions are immense. I hope that his archives (paper and otherwise) are in good hands.
  11. RIP. Those RAU/Three Motions/etc. records he's on are really interesting.
  12. Quantum is awesome, though. I have rips of both Worlds and they are indeed excellent. Had the Island on LP at one point but it was not in the greatest condition...
  13. Yeah, I made an offer to someone with a deadstock unplayed copy for pretty much NYC rent money and was turned down. Probably for the best, but man...
  14. I have some of those field recordings on LP as well, amazing stuff. Hungaroton put out a few boxes of that material (and Kodaly's).
  15. Yeah, Potts is on two Chico records on Solid State.
  16. Yeah, I mean that stuff was there if you dug / listened to college radio; "grunge" actually had a lot of interesting bands, but the better they were the less mainstream press they got. Mudhoney did pretty well in terms of popularity despite the fact that their music was/is fairly non-traditional.
  17. I mean, there were some weird ass bands in the 1980s scene that later became identified with the term "grunge." U-Men, Mr. Epp and the Calculations, the Melvins, and even Tad were not exactly normal. If you're just going by what was on the radio in 1992 I can't really help you there, but it was a pretty interesting time for rock music. Yes, Geffen were able to be on trend and pour money into signing some weird ass bands to DGC, most of which were loss leaders. Sonic Youth as a legacy band are absolutely huge, even if not exactly Nirvana numbers (and as I understand it, SY got Nirvana signed and received quite the finders fee as a result).
  18. Yeah, the Hat set is the only other one I can think of in that particular realm. Zeitgeist is cool as well, larger group though.
  19. I bought some used LPs at my local shop, ate free donuts and drank coffee, hung out with friends and talked about music. It was a nice time.
  20. I dunno, I like it.
  21. I would like to own a clean original Brasamba, though the Hokusai cover on this reissue is kinda fun in its way.
  22. Kenny Kirkland and Wynton Kelly? I suppose I should say that I like the Branford set with the Dead. It's really strong, although one can't attribute that entirely to Marsalis's presence.
  23. I wouldn't take it as one.
