  1. one of mine too. Now, Musiques du Perou -- (Ocora, FR)
  2. American Primitive vol. 1: Raw Pre-War Gospel -- (Revenant, US) my introduction to a lot of this music and still one of my favorite compilations.
  3. Music of the Vai of Liberia -- (Folkways, US) gorgeous later Ethnic Folkways title.
  4. Josiah Steinbrick -- Meeting of Waters -- (Banana Environments, US) beautiful electro-acoustic percussive soundscapes housed in a handsome book of scores/artworks. Really a nice 'thing' as well as being a fine musical statement.
  5. Oh, I like him a lot! This one is superb:
  6. good band, terrible name!
  7. This. And emphasis on "decent." So far I find this music incredibly corny. But if he gets people to listen to artists like Wadada, then maybe it's worthwhile?
  8. Same. Jimmy Ponder and Frank Mitchell!
  9. Sometimes I wouldn't want to hire my friends to do what I consider a job.
  10. fantastic album. This one, along with most of my CDs, are in offsite storage... alas.
  11. Sam Rivers -- Sizzle -- (Impulse, US)
  12. it's interesting, but I wouldn't pay a lot of money to hear it.
  13. Frank Strozier, Phil Urso, and Hal Galper? Huh.
  14. Coherents -- Red Shift -- (Prime, UK) collective improvisations with Marcio Mattos, Gerry Gold, et al.
  15. Tony Oxley/Philipp Wachsmann -- The Glider & The Grinder -- (Bead, UK) spare quartet w/ Wolfgang Fuchs and Hugh Metcalfe.
  16. Jesus christ.
  17. I have both of those. They are pretty solid for sure. Not being really 'around' for Murray-mania in the '80s/'90s, I find his work to be generally interesting and whatever doesn't grab me is easy enough to skip over.
  18. I had no idea he was at that age, either.
  19. Bruce Mackay -- s/t -- (ORO/ESP, US) haven't listened to this in at least a decade, probably longer. Holds up.
  20. I think more than one or two (and I caught the wink) -- seems like the Kamasi Washington hype and the Alice Coltrane freakout might trickle back into some newfound appreciation for John Coltrane's music. Bought the deluxe 2LP set and though my complaint elsewhere that the bass is too jacked up/boomy in the mix stands, for the most part it is a fine set of a bit more than odds and ends. "Slow Blues" was the least compelling aspect for me, but I probably will revise that after a few listens. The opener kicks ass.
  21. Pony Poindexter -- The Happy Life of Pony -- (Session, GER) great, great album! followed by Nathan Davis -- Jazz Concert in a Benedictine Monastery -- (Edici, FR)
  22. uh, I would like to see that clip...
  23. I'll likely just get the 2CD version.
  24. Rolling Stone has a nice review by Hank Shteamer.
