  1. Yeah, I'm quite fond of that one.
  2. I dunno, the Bob James on Mercury is pretty weird - electronics, inside the piano stuff, alongside real odd versions of standards. Reminds me a bit of the Don Friedman stuff from the period, albeit with a narrower vocabulary. The trio won a single-LP deal on Mercury as a prize for an Ann Arbor Jazz Festival competition in '63. This is what I recall from my conversations with the drummer, Cleve Pozar, anyway. It's a fine LP in my opinion, but then again, I like the ESP quite a bit as well.
  3. I hate it when a record is awesome and self-explanatory and therefore VERY HARD to review. Four stars, somethin' special.

  4. Really like that record, and the CD that came out before it.
  5. If I've reached the stage of record collecting where I'm impressed by the sound and pressing of G'n'R Lies, then it's all downhill from here...

  6. Looks like they're working on that part still, but I'll keep you posted as soon as I find out more info.
  7. Budgie - Budgie - (Kapp) Might be one for Shawn...
  8. Happy Father's Day to my #1 influence, Jon G. Allen, PhD. Love and a wonderful day to you, Dad!

  9. Plays Ellington was from '65 - it's a favorite of my Dad's. McCoy's touch seemed pretty tough and insistent on the Blakey date you mention; it's a Bu LP that I return to fairly often. He's a furious player, sure, but at his best not without lyricism. I do know what you mean about the "chunkier" style as a post-Coltrane thing, but I imagine its gestation was a long time coming.
  10. From the Volcanic Tongue facebook page... I knew Tom had fallen ill but there had not been any update in a while. Seems pretty serious. While not a "jazz musician" per se, Tom Carter is a wonderful player, sweet guy, and this is a really unfortunate turn of events. I'll post updates here on how to help when they become available.
  11. So Christmas is coming up soon...

  12. :tup
  13. A few sub-optimal late life performances aside - and you've got to grant a few - absolutley. Amen. Another example, for me, is Burton Greene. His work of the last decade-plus has been simply wonderful.
  14. Thanks, Brownie!
  15. Perception - Perception - (Futura)
  16. A.R. Penck/Triple Trip Touch - 3+1 - (Wau Wau)
  17. He's on the Joe Daley Trio at Newport 1963, released by RCA-Victor.
  18. Can't wait for some brown cheese tonight!

  19. Cooper-Moore is great. Live, on the piano, or on his self-made instruments, it's a very special thing. Glad you got to catch In Order To Survive; a band I never got to see but always dug the records.
  20. The Bley is with Izenzon and Motian. Not sure if it was supposed to be an ESP or not - it was recorded by Jerry Newman in New York, same studio as the Cherry.
  21. Welcome to the board Farnell. Thanks for spreading the love Sunny's way. He's a unique voice and a fascinating guy, and was kind enough to give me a few hours of his time when I was starting to interview musicians. I'll never forget it.
  22. Paul Bley - Mr. Joy - (Limelight)
  23. Dick Wellstood & His Hot Potatoes feat. Kenny Davern - (Seeds)
