    I'm not saying that compensation should be thrown to the wind, but a more nuanced look at hip-hop culture might make one think differently. The brush you seemed to paint with was too broad for my tastes. (i.e., "fair use" clauses)

    1. Time is here. 2. For sure. Sampling is another issue that's v. complex, but as a concept I think it's fine and often great. As long as the source is acknowledged, you know.

    I'd like someone to tell me what's morally wrong with buying used items on the marketplace. Most artists I've talked to on this subject have said that, hey, at least you're paying & working to get the art from a reseller, rather than just spreading someone else's stuff around for free. I think that when one makes a record and releases it into the marketplace, they have relinquished control over what the next owner of that physical object will do with it. That's very different from sharing intellectual property on the internet. You're dealing with object vs. concept.

    Yes. It's probably the only BN sleeve which was IMPROVED when Applause issued it I got my copy cheap (4 EUR) because someone has painted the cover all blue and then just written "Jimmy Smith, Plain Talk' with a white crayon! Haha, one-of-a-kind!

    Oh, absolutely. I think I paid around $60 for Nommo, but that was a while ago in the early days of eBay (Live at Yale is the really elusive one). Of course, some of this stuff just won't be reissued no matter what - Graves doesn't want the SRP albums to be reissued, ever. And the Horo reissue program, well, we've been over that before elsewhere. I think the IPS catalog is also locked down (some excellent stuff across those four releases). And the estates of Jeanne Lee, Clifford Thornton (the real one!), and many other musicians have made it nearly impossible to see their music become legitimately available once again.

    So has anyone talked with Anthony Braxton about Garrett List? I hadn't heard "American Images" in years; now listening to a clean copy (cheaply sourced, even), and the anti-war texts the group recites are reminiscent of Trillium. Of course, over 20 years separate List's work and Braxton's opera, but I know they worked together some in the 1980s. Seems like great minds think alike.

    Yeah, I mean, I just can't fork over a grand for an LP that's unavailable in another format. If I could I would! And some people on this board (though probably few) refuse to go the download/share blog route, which is a commendable path to take.

    Huh - didn't know of this J.C. Moses appearance. Interesting. He plays fine in this setting, although it is perhaps more conservative than some of his other appearances. I find Sample more enjoyable here than with the Jazz Crusaders; he gets opportunity to stretch out a bit.     I dreamt that I saw a duet of JR Monterose and Wim Overgaauw playing at the Menil Collection. Afterward I went up and told them how "spectral" it sounded. They both laughed (of course, they would have been ghosts).

    Really wonderful set tonight at DMG from Ted Daniel and the International Brass & Membrane Corps. One of the bands I'd hoped to see upon moving here, and they were great. They utilize the framework of King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band (1923) for contemporary leaping-off points. I would think that few current approaches to this particular music emphasize the compositions' inherent eccentricity, and my breath was taken away by the tightrope walks that the musicians encountered/engendered, both in ...

    I like it and would recommend it to fans of this kind of music. It's really well-recorded, for one thing, and Guy is very much on point.
