  1. St. Louis Jimmy Oden - 1932-1948 - (RST)
  2. Allen Brothers - The Chattanooga Boys - (Old Timey)
  3. Wait a second, that could be done. "Embraceable You," anyone? "Sex Spy?"
  4. Art Pepper is awesome. I would add that those whose music challenges me the most - to the point of sometimes not LIKING it - are those to whom genius I can apply. Also those who are very subtle but whose class and beauty and complexity I grasp at only later fall into this category. So: Dixon, Braxton, Cecil (tho his music was always "easy" for me to like), Ayler, Trane, Joe Maneri, Roscoe, Monk, Nichols, George Russell...
  5. Tom, you should offer to help consign the collection to a local brick-and-mortar or eBay it. I have done that and been rewarded with a no-hard-feelings "pick of the litter."
  6. Amen, brother. To paraphrase Misha, a true "painter."
  7. I think the tape must have got damaged. Yeah, phasing, warble, wobble, various terms apply afaik to the "dropping in and out" of the cymbals. It's also bad on some of the 10" reissues. I have a Toshiba copy of the Hank w/ Lee and Byrd that also sounds pretty shitty, but it is a more general distortion with the highs that may or may not be on the source. I wonder if Kings are better or if this is one reason why some go for the OG issues?
  8. Does yours have phasing on the last track of side B?
  9. Mine are "out" leaning early ones so there you go. Unless Alfred Harth had a Jon Hendricks fascination that I don't know about...
  10. How are you measuring the concept of "genius?" I think one has to be pretty bright to even play this music and there are certainly a ton who play - or have played - it well. "Genius" is, to me, like "success" or "value" in that much of the concept can only be applied after someone's work till the day they die can be assessed in terms of influence, etc. Braxton will be a genius, Bill Dixon too. Cecil. Roscoe. Many...
  11. Moshi - Saravah, 1972. This thread has a lot of good recommendations, moreso than my pocketbook can afford.
  12. The laws are knotty enough that places like Dusty Groove aren't going to be shut down for selling Andorran CDs or even discs of dubious provenance offered for sale in the US. I think that with the board and its stance, ethics are in play more than law.
  13. I have a smattering of good Wilen records/CDs in my collection. Most are of the late 60s/early 70s "experimental" variety including a great set with Francois Tusques originally issued on the Mouloudji label.
  14. Right. I'm willing to admit I have a few total bootlegs CD-Rs but I'm not telling anyone where I got them!
  15. The "fuck you" thread.
  16. Black Gypsy, by Archie Shepp, has worked for me.
  17. Phill Musra Group - The Creator Spaces - (Intex) w/ Huseyin Ertunc, Michael Cosmic. Been a little bit since I've spun this, but reacquainting after Phill sent me some more recent music.
  18. I think it's a fair discographical question and the thread should not be closed.
  19. Um, having no Armstrong in my collection is this where I should start? Edit to add that I have heard the Columbia small groups but not in some time.
  20. Sexual preferences of board members Doctors visits - what have you got? The Babe Thread What's the latest on PerezHilton?
  21. I'd like to see a Giuffre set that focuses on his work post-3, especially some of the 70s/80s stuff for Choice, Soul Note, IAI, etc. I think that would be really nice & interesting. Especially since that is material that doesn't get as much "talk" as the earlier work.
  22. I haven't seen the new-new issue yet. The Koester article was solid, as far as I could tell. Those new Delmarks that the kids are doing are real nice, most of 'em.
