  1. Sheesh, here we go again... I'm fed up with these stupid prejudices, they stopped being funny a long time ago. Windmills, tulips and clogs next, probably. And all Dutch drummers sounding like Johnny Engels...
  2. Shit, that's terrible. I am a big fan of Kagel's work, especially the "theatrical" pieces from the early '70s and their attendant films. He will be missed!
  3. Paul Smith, right. It's mentioned in the liners to the Simmons Arhoolie record that the drummer was working with Ayler. I don't know of recordings of this gig surfacing anywhere, but it would be interesting to hear with that rhythm section.
  4. I'm a whiner, and I would rather spend my $50 on filling an FMP gap or buying a cool boxed set than re-buying a BN I already have in King, Liberty, or CD form. (said from my pile of money on a houseboat smoking reefer)
  5. I hear you. Live/Dead is fantastic, kind of Amon Duul-y in a way. Allman Brothers kinda bore me. This Tyner disc would bore me, I'm sure, if I ever listened to it - which I won't.
  6. The fact that they're not Fridays...
  7. You assume only the Dutch sit on piles of money smoking weed?
  8. Haven't heard the album, but I've read Braxton was a little pissed at the title -- and given the man's output, it is pretty absurd. It's a really nice set, and presents Braxton in various context. Hence the title, I guess.
  9. Hell, maybe I'll have two copies... not to mention most of this on LP!
  10. Yes, and Moncur's compositions are "Intelligently Designed."
  11. Christ - that's insane. Supposedly I'm getting a review copy but I pre-ordered anyway, just to be safe.
  12. The Complete Braxton was a Black Lion production, licensed by Arista for the US market.
  13. I got Evolution at the local independent record store on Tues... End of an Ear? Just saw it sittin' in the rack there on Tuesday night.
  14. Think that one's in Portland, Maine, but even the Space Gallery won't program it...
  15. I actually clicked on that link...
  16. That's why we have a search function. In the past, members jumped all over new posters who were constantly starting new threads about existing artists. I don't think I'm hassling Durium for this, but this is getting kind of silly, starting a new thread every time he makes a post. Yeah, yeah, I know what yr sayin'. Ultimately this could also be in the "Jazz in Print" section...
  17. Durium's blog references a yet-unpublished book on Ellis. I see your point, but then again, with all the different Ellis-related threads and the varied information contained therein, a 167-page Don Ellis thread would be kind of a pain to sift through. And Keep Swinging is a very nice blog. (some of us should be reading it!)
  18. Poe faced? I like this one - wild stuff.
  19. Those are beautiful! When I talk to him, I'll let him know that you took some nice shots of him and his baritone (he sounds so wonderful on that horn).
  20. I don't have anything other than a sideman date with Giorgio Buratti leading. Good player, though. Maybe some of our Italian Jazz Recommendations crew can chime in.
  21. I've never had a perfect copy of either, just my luck, so I'm confident in your grading here. Looking forward! (that "Drone" piece is a bitch, innit?)
  22. Herb Bushler is still alive - he was very happy, apparently, with the reissue of New World.
  23. He still plays fairly frequently in Minneapolis and environs. I have one LP of his on Elektra. 'tis nice!
  24. At the time, when Infinite Jest came out, I liked it though at the same time wondered what all the fuss was about. Strangely, I feel now that the fuss has waned unfairly - he was a very intelligent and at times pretty far out writer. I enjoyed his nonfiction quite a bit. I don't know how to add footnotes to a post, so I'll just say again, RIP.
  25. If you're referring to the Cuneiform set, I second that emotion... a truly bitchin' pair of discs!
