  1. Nice! I have some Toshiko LPs, including a couple with Tabackin. All of them are small or small-ish group affairs.
  2. Absolutely -- that large ensemble music is pretty tremendous. I interviewed him many years ago for what was then called AAJ-NY. The full text is somewhere buried on the AAJ website. I wish they treated their archives better.
  3. Ujamaa is Ted's own label. I'm sure the source tapes aren't always pristine. The extra tracks on Sextet make it a worthwhile pickup, in addition to the original LP (which is still reasonably priced according to Discogs). I have the Sun LP of Tapestry and the sound is far from crisp, but it is a very cool record.
  4. hey porcy62, been a while. On one level I agree with you (and am absolutely fine with my Japanese mono pressing of this album), but on another level a mass-produced item, even if comparatively few untarnished examples survive, is still mass-produced. It's not like the one-of-a-kind stage drawings I worked with as an archivist.
  5. Huh. I have the old CD reissue of Amaranths, which sounds fine to my ears.
  6. What a mess. I hope it gets sorted out positively for you. And yes, dementia is a progressive disease and I hope you have some folks around that can help you out without hindering normal life too much.
  7. Mine landed; haven't had time to spin them yet but look forward to the experience!
  8. a film -- er, documentary -- that I never tire of.
  9. I believe he is retired from public performance.
  10. oh yeah, I know what you meant. I'd imagine, though, someone could spin it to devalue the contributions of the non-superstar players.
  11. Oh damn, that's too bad. He was an asset to this community. RIP.
  12. yeah, agree. Poor Things is an awesome movie and Emma Stone was superb, but Gladstone's portrayal in Flower Moon is unfuckwithable. Flower Moon is great, certainly "Scorsese-ish," but also an important film that needed to be made. The book is even better. Flower Moon also did not feel long to me. It's very engrossing.
  13. Ah, didn't know Carlos played with Mal. His album Radio Song is a scorcher!
  14. yeah, I haven't listened to that record in many years. In fact, upthread I seem to have spaced on owning it!
  15. Fair point. I think, however, that there is a tendency to equate the "local rhythm section" with amateurs, when we know that's not the case with Mal's collaborators on these dates.
  16. van der Capellen was a great bassist. Wish I'd been able to see him in person!
  17. True, though I'd argue that most of the players on those records already had or would soon develop very strong pedigrees on their own. Guy Hayat is probably the only sideman whose career seems a bit more obscure. Then again, he did play & make recordings with Bud Powell...
  18. cool. Maybe Patrice Caratini and Guy Hayat or a similar rhythm section. I'm sure it'll be an enjoyable set, whatever it is.
  19. oh yeah, I saw that. Pretty far out.
  20. absolutely true. As they used to say, records are a "sound" investment!
  21. yeah, it was awesome to see two of the candle paintings exhibited years ago... and I don't think Richter was as well-known when the album came out as he became, at least in America.
