MG yeah sound, it's weak and very uncertain , wavering around much of the time, I have to assume it's deliberate I haven't listened to it in a couple years, but I don't remember "feeling" it as much as I was hoping to. Maybe that's why, but it doesn't stick out in my mind. I'll have to listen to the record later and jog the memory.

I'm certainly not one to bemoan the valuable interest in the personality and the man - if I were, then interviewing musicians and artists wouldn't be a passion of mine, mythology and all - but I've just heard the "are they or aren't they" debate w/r/t Sunny and Cecil a number of times and, frankly, to me it gets a little boring. They're complicated and eminently fascinating individuals, whatever their sexual orientation (and cosmic, and literary), so I'm willing to take it all as part and parcel of the equation AND enjoy the music.

No, I'm with you Tony on the amateurs - a couple of training buddies were ex-domestiques and they were insane riders. Probably still are. But my point was, as you said, that doping is all through cycling, and the demands placed on the human body to complete those races have always required pharmaceutical assistance, among other things. Sobeit. If Landis loses the title, can you trust #2 not to be doped as well? Doubtful. Still, I had high hopes for Landis making the podium this year, well before the race begun. Scandal or no, he was strong and things fell into place for him. That's not a result of doping, and never is.

The Weird Weeds, from Austin, Texas, are my new favorite current band. Drumset/vocals and two guitars, one of which is played on the floor with a violin bow and chalk slide. It's not "free-folk" or any of that crap, but indie-pop with a churning psychedelic/free undertow. Excellent stuff!

And speaking of Saba, Transfiguration is one of the most brilliant documents of '60s European jazz. Consistently a surprising and nuanced date, and certainly my favorite of the Kuhn brothers. Now that one needs to be on CD!

Now: Clifford Thornton - Freedom & Unity (Third World original) I'd go so far as to say I prefer Thornton's trombone playing to his cornet work. But that's just me and my alter-ego!

Oh THAT one, yeah I remember that CD. It's always pretty cheap as an LP, though I've never bought it. Always preferred the small-group stuff, though with some proper guidance that could change. How's the Nonet on Atlantic?

Tell us more about the book. When will it be available? It's a collection of interviews and artist's writings, all in English or translated into English, spanning Lacy's career and compiled by Jason Weiss. It's due in September from Duke University Press. I wrote a blurb on it for the August issue of AAJ-NY with a review online to follow shortly...

Both of those Uniteledis LPs are outstanding, just to reiterate... Anybody heard/have the Attica Blues Big Band on Blue Marge? It always looked pretty heavy, though the "original" Attica Blues was never my cup o' tea.

There is a Base Italian pressing from the 80s, with the typical black-on-white Base logo. The original French pressing has a black label with orange graphics, cat. no. 28976 (September 28, 1976 recording date). The other Uniteledis Shepp, afaik, was not reissued by Base. Jef Gilson and Gerard Terrones both had something to do with the label, though I've always heard it was mostly Gilson's deal. The inner sleeves and pressings look more like Palm than Futura/Marge. Maybe brownie could shed some light?

Rolf & Joachim Kuhn - Monday Morning (HorZu Black Label) great early '70s madness with Surman, Phillips, Martin, Thollot and Eje Thelin. I especially like how, in reverse of what's normal, the tunes start with relentless racket and end with lighthearted folk melodies!

Well, it's been going on for years, they're all doped - even the domestiques at the back of the pack. Sacking Ullrich won't clean up the problem; nor would sacking bodybuilders who test positive for steroids. I personally think a safer type of performance-enhancing drug should be legalized and professional cycling can get on with its existence.

Force is a motherfucker, indeed. It originally came out on Uniteledis (France), a subsidiary of Palm. The other Shepp record in that series was Massy U-Jaama, a quintet which is also pretty nice.
