  1. Dallas-based trumpeter/flugelhornist, educator, and composer Dennis González passed on Tuesday, March 15 at 67. I was lucky to see him a few times when I lived in Austin, and his sons Stefan (percussion) and Aaron (bass) many times. I know the last decade or so had been a struggle owing to significant health challenges, and surely he's at peace now. https://www.dallasobserver.com/music/dennis-gonzalez-who-died-tuesday-wanted-to-be-the-hero-of-his-own-legend-he-was-13617933 His recordings for Daagnim, Silkheart, Clean Feed, Ayler, and Qbico (among other labels) are all superb. Others here knew him on a more personal level than I did (especially Sangrey) and probably have some stories. Great man, glad to have shared the air with him.
  2. Yeah, those I would recommend -- also Collaboration (w/ Kikuchi), Live at the Junk, Dedicated to Charlie Parker, Round Trip, and his work with Charlie Mariano.
  3. yes, far worse actually.
  4. I've since learned about some nefarious behavior around his ex-partner Marlee Matlin that leaves quite a bad taste in my mouth. Cocaine is a hell of a drug...
  5. yeah, I have all of those on LP. Stellar albums. The Kikuchis are pretty happening throughout -- Re:Confirmation is my pick of the litter. You Wanna Rain is also a very strong LP with Shigeharu Mukai on trombone in excellent form.
  6. Wow, that sucks! Sad news. I thought he was excellent.
  7. Wow, such sad news. Way too young. Always liked his presence here though I don't think I got to know him outside of his posts.
  8. Won't be in Buffalo but I hope to get that trio to Kingston at some point.
  9. yeah, that book is swell. Bisio's new CD with Berger, Dickey, and Maneri is HOT.
  10. Lace Mill is doing stuff now -- was just there yesterday to see Karl Berger perform. Next ones definitely locked in are Apr 24, May 22, June 5 (I'll announce those lineups as we get closer, in separate threads). Also working on an Astral Spirits showcase for June 24. Beverly seems to be done.
  11. This upcoming Sunday: Tickets here: https://tubbyskingston.lyte.com/3701204
  12. That is a really wonderful LP.
  13. Yeah, it's really tremendous. Still waiting for one of my long ago preorders with them to ship... kind of done with the preorder game if it's going to take this long.
  14. yeah, it really sucks and doesn't look good for Bandcamp or the artists.
  15. I need to try that one again. Didn't do much for me when I first heard it in the late '90s, but my tastes have changed.
  16. Nice record. Astrorama (with Sato, NHOP, M. Hino, Masuo) on Liberty/Express is good too. The album with Michel Portal, Phil Woods, and Daniel Humair is a party.
  17. ROLAND ?!? ezz-thetics needs to slow it down and put some actual care into these reissues. Otherwise they'll be indistinguishable from their Euro-PD brethren.
  18. yep. Always felt that way about Lyons/Taylor/Murray though some might disagree. @ep1str0phy -- are you listening to Akisakila on LP or CD? For what it's worth, the original Trio 2LP set sounds great to me. I was floored by the quality of the sound upon a recent revisit. And I think the sound on this digital release of the Town Hall concert is a bit fuller than what was on the Unit Core vinyl -- bass is more audible, etc.. Indent II and the large ensemble were never released on LP. Shame.
  19. They look like puffed fish crackers. You can get them from vendors in Chinatown in NY among many other places. Good record too.
  20. I feel like there was something and Sangrey was part of it.
  21. I heard something solo/unaccompanied at least a dozen years ago that I thought was good, but admittedly haven't given his work much attention since.
  22. Always looked a little like Bluiett to me although the hair is a little fuller. The second label design has a David Murray-like appearance.
  23. that's not how it's supposed to run.
