George Coleman Octet 'Big George' (Affinity). Brings back good memories of seeing these guys back in the day.

Would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this set (not that I am going to pull the trigger or anything.. )

Several of the 'Frankly Jazz' show tunes are included on the very fine 'Katanga!' session, which is included in the Select. The show was, I believe, sponsored by Dick Bock of PC and during each episode they publicise the then-current product of the artist featured. The Amy/Bolton had a quick feature on 'Katanga' I believe and the Jazz Crusaders show featured 'Freedom Sound'.

Got this one from one of the CD clubs when it originally came out and on the whole it's a . Good reminder for me to dig it out again.

That probably means 2 days..

One of the best mixes of hard bop and soul jazz that there ever was, IMO. Definitely not lightweight - it will be a great set !

My record is for an instantaneous delivery - at least it is when you buy from the 'horses mouth' ie. Scott Wenzel in person.

I'll probably pass on the Kid Ory set. 8CDs is just a bit too much and I've got heaps of music still to listen to in my 'pending' pile, not least the Anita O'Day set. DrJ's comments in the Ory thread do make it sound tempting though..

Yes, I remember Big Miller. A hugely popular figure up in Edmonton and very sadly missed when he passed away some years ago. Nice to hear that they put up a statue in his honour. Very much deserved !

The Anita O'Day set has gone straight to 'Last Chance' and very suddenly. Maybe Mosaic have just got a reminder from Universal that this one is about to time out on its 5-year period. The other sets I guess must just have run low on the remaining stock.

Wow - I'm glad I picked up the O'Day set from Scott Wenzel at the LP convention recently. Very strongly recommended, I had no idea that it was in imminent 'threat of extinction.' I'd be interested in hearing about the Kid Ory too. I have the other 2 sets and they are both worth having, espacially the JJ. Don't miss that one..

Just noticed that the blues singer Long John Baldry has died in Vancouver, Canada age 64 of complications from a lung infection. Long John Baldry RIP Sad news, hope he is now in peace.

'Fraid so ! I read the notes in the box set which put down this session as a 'filler' but I have to say that I find the music strangely catchy. Particularly Kirk's tenor solos. The 'Star Trecky' vocal chorus's are an acquired taste though. That bit of film with Stan Tracey and Rahsaan at Ronnie Scotts was - by strange coincidence - broadcast by the BBC last night in the 'Jazz Britannia' repeat. He was on 'full bore' - too bad it was only a very brief snippet.

I've had the Mercury box for 10 or so years now and its been a big favourite that I've dipped into constantly. Being a vinyl fetishist of late I've tried to pick up the Mercury/Limelight LPs when I've seen them and have in the racks the main ones such as 'Rip Rig & Panic', 'Domino', 'With Benny Golson', 'I Talk With The Spirits', 'In Copenhagen' and 'Slightly Latin'. The last of these was probably the most elusive but is one of my faves. If your main preference is the CD medium you can't go wrong with the box, which has pretty good mastering. The quality of the sessions is so uniformly high that it pays to go the whole hog and get the box. There's also a bonus live cut CD with Andrew Hill of 'A Stritch In Time'.
