Erik gave a great list of suggestions in advance, I pre-warned him of my intended visit date/time and - lo behold- when I was delving through the seam of vinyl he was at the counter asking if there was 'an English guy' who had called in. Funnily enough, there were two there that afternoon..

A possible scoop, Tooter. Just found this one - an album of Beatles covers by Ross-LeSage with Ike Isaacs. Apparently from 1971 on WRC. Not sure if it's listed in your discography.

That rings a bell with me. I wasn't sure though.

One of the worst examples I can think of is on that great Prestige session by James Moody and Eddie Jefferson and Dave Burns which includes 'Filthy McNasty'. Barry Harris has to contend with a terrible piano that probably also featured on the Martino 'East'. Funnily enough though, the pitch of the piano probably seems to add to the appeal of the performance.

I know its been said before but I find it incredible that material this strong was kept in the can for this long. Thank goodness this set was put out, with such great attention to detail, packaging/notes and sound.

I think there was a thread on this on the old BNBB. I recall that he ended up in jail (can't remember the offence) back in the 1960s. Not sure what happened to him after that. Quite active on the LA scene in the early 60s, I believe. Didn't he also put in an appearance on stage with Miles?

Of course Mal Waldron had to cope with the same problem at the Five Spot during the Booker Little/Eric Dolphy live recordings. The music trancends the problem, thankfully...

Pat Martino 'El Hombre' (Prestige Blue Label stereo) to follow:- John Cameron 'Off Centre' (Deram, mono) - with Harold McNair.

I'm also pretty partial to his work with Max Roach, particularly in tandem with George Coleman and Ray Draper on 'Deeds Not Words'.

I've just got through repeated spins of disk 1 and a spin of disk 2 and already the verdict is a big thumbs up. Release of the year so far, for me. Big impression of disk 1 is just how funky it is. Reminds me quite a bit of 'Grass Roots', same sort of groove. A bit ragged in spots but overall - excelent. Some very catchy tunes too, level of composition very high. Big suprise hearing Andrew on organ on CD 2. Immediate connections for me with the sound of Sun Ra but yes, definitely also a hint of Larry Young. The Kermit Moore string quartet material I knew from the vinyl double but 'Illusion' sounds absolutely beautiful. Malcolm Addey has done a great job with the mastering. Five Stars !

Wow - especially in such lousy condition..

BFrank - Your description of the 'Cornbread' matches mine, except that my copy is a stereo. I have a Donald Byrd 'Mustang' though which is in mono and also matches your description. Very early Liberty-era pressings, quite rare.

I would say certainly in the $200 to $350 mark, depending on condition. The 'Cliff Jordan' probably more. I recently got hold of an original of that particular Silver title and love the sound of that one. Hang on to them !

Time to stock up...

That's the usual ! I'm suprised at the comments about the sound on 'Slice of the Top'. It's way better than the LT-series 'Rainbow' original. I'll have to give it a spin a bit later. I'm still impressed with the sound of the 'Basra'. Holds up quite well against the NY USA original, IMO, although the sound is not as full.
