I have a few details on this one which I will try to forward tomorrow, Tooter. Its a 10" LP on UK Columbia.
-
Have you got this one, Tooter? Ronnie is apparently credited as 'Redvers Reedworker' ! I think the format is 10".

'Brilliant Corners' -
There's certainly a lot of cross-fertilisation between the folk and jazz scenes here in the UK. Huw Warren is a good example, an artist who operates equally in both genres, drawing on the old UK folk tradition. Another example would be Danny Thompson, a bass player who has done a lot of mainstream jazz work but has also been featured on lots of folk sessions. Ditto the late Harold McNair's work with the likes of John Martin. Singer Christine Tobin also seems to draw extensively from the UK/Irish folk tradition, as well as drawing on elements of jazz, with convincing results. Worth also mentioning the hybrids with Scottish folk music such as John Rae's 'Celtic Feet' (who have performed at festivals with Hungarian folk musicians, again very convincingly). Ken Hyders 'Talisker' was another band that delved extensively into the highland repertoire.

I have most of this one on the OOP Camden Cedar Walton 2CD set. I've always liked it - second the comment about Hank's playing. He's putting 120% in there, the ideas and sense of purpose are first rate but the lungs are right at their limit. 'On the edge' sums it up pretty well - not the greatest Mobley perhaps but some of the most fascinating.

There is some justice in this world ! Thanks for posting this.

Sal Salvador Quartet 'Juicy Lucy' (Beehive) Ramsey Lewis 'The In Crowd' (Argo deep groove). Both £3 each and in near mint !

That 'Village Vanguard' box is a must-have. Incredible music, good notes and great sound. The definitive issue. I'd also recommend 'Live In Seattle' for some really interesting late period Coltrane, pushing the boundaries in a live recording with Pharoah Sanders. Elvin & McCoy hanging in there, not knowing what to make of it all at times. 'Sun Ship' (a very under-rated and challenging late Impulse session) is also very highly recommended too.

b3-er - shall I delete this thread?

Have a very happy birthday !
-
Just about every copy of this LP that I have ever come across has been beaten up or had a cut-out. Must be something about the title !

Picked up an original deep groove of Ramsey's 'The In Crowd' at a record fair today. Cost £3 . Always liked this one !

my last mosaic purchase for the year? Ha!

That Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams Mosaic is an absolute MONSTER set. It isn't at caiman's "cash 'n' carry" but at $64 what have you got to lose? :rsmile: -
oh how sad! but why did he stop playing? The 'JazzTimes' article mentions asthma - no doubt due to this mold and chemical issue. I'm not suprised to hear that he's not playing at all, probably hard enough work just to breathe. I'm all for this fundraising idea - I can't think of a more deserving cause. I just hope things improve soon for Mr Kloss, in return for all of the fine music he's given us over the years. I still hold out hope that he will be reunited live with Pat Martino. I asked Pat about Eric a few years ago on one of his tours and he confirmed that he was musically active again and teaching. This must have preceded this asthma onset.

Article in 'Jazzwise' this month mentions Holland's move from ECM. No falling out whatsoever apparently - he's done this in order to get full control over the rights to the music for his family/estate.

Martyjazz: This was probably a typo, but Evans died in New Jersey. I was at his last performance at Fat Tuesday. Michele Le Grand was there also, by the way. Evans had to have someone on each side of him to get around; he was so unsteady on his feet. Joe LaBarbra ( who is from my area ) told me that night that he recorded every set of every night that he played with him! Those final Bill Evans concerts seem to have brought out the celebrities. I saw two of the nights of the final Ronnie Scotts engagement and extremely moving it was too. On the first of those nights Art Garfunkel and companion were at the same table I was sat. I think he was filming in London at the time. It was clear that Evans was extremely unwell (he had to be helped off the stage several times at the end of sets) but it was still a shock that he died so soon after the gig. In retrospect, he was very much a 'man on a mission' during these last gigs, playing with great sense of purpose/adventure. The past-midnight shows I saw only had 15-20 people in the house but we were all enchanted. I would therefore definitely have to add the Evans 'Village Vanguard' performances (Milestone CD and Mosaic LP ) to the list. These recordings take me right back to those two incredible evenings at Scotts... -
Nice early start today, I have a vinyl sale to attend to . Absolutely superb sunny day but no snow unlike in Paris as Brownie mentions. I think about 4 members were using the board when I logged on this morning.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Thad & Mel disk 1. The music on this particular disk hangs together beautifully and the sound is spectacular ! -
I have to say that this set has already been in heavy rotation this weekend. The first 3 disks I have spun are fantastic. At £37 it's less than £5.50 per disk with free box and booklet. Unbeatable... Love that West Coast session with Bill Perkins, Bob Gordon & co !

Huh, you mean she's not from Manhattan. I think she was actually born in Liverpool and emigrated to Canada at an early age. Her parents are also scousers B-) If she's scouse I don't think your accent would work Tony. On this basis I would definitely pull out my Ace card, the vinyl 'Heavyweight Champ' set. Irresistable !

Asked to select her 'desert island disks' by BBC Radio, Coltrane's 'My Favourite Things' is on the list. Billie Holiday is on there too. Hmmmmm...... Kim's Desert Island Disks here..
-
Totally agree with you about the Moody. One of my favourites ! Just spinning Tubby Hayes 'Tubbs' Tours' (Fontana mono) To be followed by McCoy Tyner 'Tender Moments' (BN Liberty original).

I totally agree with you. Charles Fox had great musical taste and played some very challenging material. I remember him playing just about everything on Evan Parker's 'Incus' label when they came out. I also remember him playing quite a bit of Anthony Braxton, which resulted in me buying the 'NY Fall 1974' and 'Montreux/Berlin' Aristas. He certainly broadened the listening horizon ! I also remember that superb, scholarly series called 'The Arranger In Jazz' that he broadcast on R3, quite a bit of which I think I've still got on cassette tape. Maybe the reason all of this is recalled in such detail is thanks to the total dearth of jazz on radio at that time other than these few programmes. I can remember tuning in to a very faint French am station one night (thanks only to radio wave reflections from the troposphere !) and hearing the whole of Miles's 'Agharta' album played. I don't think any of the UK stations gave this one airplay at the time. The French, Germans and Swiss were spoiled rotten with their radio jazz !

Mustn't forget the two Tubby Hayes live Fontanas: 'Late Spot at Scott's' 'Down In The Village'
