Sound quality as good as can be expected considering the circumstances but great music and the usual expert sleeve note essay by Simon Spillett.

Is that the original Vertigo? If so, hang on to it, it is quite a collectible item in 1st press. Great cover art ! Ian Carr/Nucleus albums probably sold even more copies on the continent than they did here.

That was a very welcome reissue. A session which promises more than it delivers, perhaps - nevertheless good to see it back in circulation. Other than the single track included in the ‘Jazz Explosion’ LP, it was new to me.

Elvis lives?

The Liberty sounds fine - blue/white label. Heck, even the 1970s British UA pressing I have of this one sounds fine (that was a good burst of reissues - around 1977/78, which preceded the ‘Jazz File’ series).

Interesting - I have a decent original Liberty of this one and after reading this I will probably pass.

Thoughtful obituary for Malcolm Griffiths by Richard Williams - never realised that he had joined Buddy Rich, only to return home due to missing the cricket. Respect ! https://www.theguardian.com/music/2021/jan/29/malcolm-griffiths-obituary I think the very last gig I caught by him must have been the Kenny Wheeler 80th Birthday Big Band. Certainly, he was in the lineup and prominently featured for the 75th as well. Great combination of technique, fluency and power.

More an issue that CDs these days are so cheap, not necessarily that the Tone Poets are so expensive I think. I remember Pathe Marconi Blue Notes being about £7-8 in the 1980s. Factor in inflation since then and the TPs are not that far out of line.

Those Black Saint/Soul Note sets on ‘special’ are tempting !

German reissue, early 2000s. Absolute garbage - half the band sound as though they are playing their parts from the washroom. When are Rearward going to get round to their planned reissue of this one?

The UK performance was in April of 1982 I think. I caught one of those performances at the RFH, which was televised here by Channel 4. Great kudos to Cicely for accompanying him that year, after the minor stroke issue. My seat was well back and the house was packed but there was an amazing atmosphere. Last time he played here was over 10 years before.

Good that they still seem to be offering the free mail service above a certain amount.

Interesting to read that Miles and Cicely were planning to marry in 1968 but in the end he switched to Betty Mabry. I recall that she accompanied Miles on the long awaited 1982 visit to the UK and was filmed pushing him through immigration in a wheelchair I think.

Remember seeing her in ‘Roots’. RIP.

How was the VAT dealt with?

Hopefully they will re-press the first Ray Russell. Just heard that Vol 2 vinyl of ‘Ray Russell Live’ will be issued this Spring.
