  1. I see that the Gene Russell vinyl release for RSD is getting reports of ‘bright sound’ on the Hoffmann board. Needle drop ?
  2. So - signed by Ron then..nice !
  3. Didn’t even know that one was on the list !
  4. Yes, the Parker on LP does seem superfluous (and expensive) considering that it is readily available on CD. I was tempted by the Neil Swanson but have always found the Concord CD very much acceptable.
  5. Fond memories of seeing that one when it was toured in the UK.
  6. I’m using one of these for my Spotify streaming. Haven’t yet hooked it up to a NAS but that might be a good project to look at. Preference though is for CDs on the main system, with LPs the priority option when I have it on vinyl.
  7. Anyone else participate in this 1st Aug 29th ‘Drop’? I didn’t bother attending in person (not keen on 5hr queues in a pandemic) but I did manage to order online the Sun Ra Egypt ‘71 5LP set from Strut, which is pretty well the only thing I was interested in. No doubt it will be on discount and freely available in a couple of weeks time.
  8. Indeed I did. I was using it for a school project at the time (Music ‘O’ Level) and that was my main resource. I think it was graded an ‘A’.
  9. Yep - down a drainpipe (or was it a stairwell..). It’s in the notes. Gladys wasn’t amused !
  10. Still got that great Vogue 3LP set from the seventies. Excellent !
  11. 50 years ago tomorrow ! The weather was better that weekend !
  12. More like a Genesis LP on Charisma !
  13. This is an excellent Monk release - well worth the effort. Maybe the UK’s new trade deals are kicking in?
  14. A classic of its kind ! Excellent Turtle Records release of the Deram LPs, in good sound. Plus additional tracks !
  15. Both of those are excellent too. Mike’s site was offering the Hat CD of Rossini (Swiss radio version I think) a while ago for £5, which was a bargain. Both the live version of the Rossini and the radio version are great. I have ‘On Duke’s Birthday’ on a 2LP set and that is very good too. Calling resident Westbrook experts Chris-T and Jazzscriven for further pointers.... Good move ! This recent archival 2CD release also captures some fine performances in excellent sound and with a good cross-section of his and Kate’s work, including stuff from ‘Citadel’.
  16. BGO or the recent recording? Both very good really so you won’t be disappointed either way.
  17. Yes, I have the Swedish recording on vinyl. It’s fine but my personal preference is the original studio version in the BGO CD reissue. I prefer the latter to my RCA LP version. Music-wise all are excellent. I think Surman plays better on the studio version. In fact, it is one of his best performances IMO. Even 10 years ago the BGO was hard to find. I chanced on a good second hand copy in a shop and even then it wasn’t cheap. Mike W.’s current Orchestra has been featuring numbers from this title in concerts over the past few years.
  18. That aligns with my own recollections - he didn’t look too well at Swanage but he played a blinding set.
  19. Although the Swedish performance of ‘Citadel’ is good, I’m not a great fan of the sound, which is a bit on the thin side. Prefer the studio version - the BGO issue is worth searching for.
  20. Wasn’t cheap here either - £75 I think - and involved a Record Store Day scrum just to get at it.
  21. Happy Birthday Mr Martino !
  22. Very sad news - A classy player who played on diverse, important dates. We seem to be losing these few remaining and important players from the classic era at an alarming rate. RIP. Yes, Brownie - ‘impecable’ is spot on in the case of Mr Persip.
