  1. Presumably recorded at 30th St?
  2. RSD issue, signed by Ron. Lovely 2LP release by the German In ‘n’ Out label. As usual, Renee Rosnes’ playing is superb.
  3. Would be a great accompaniment to the Tubby Hayes LP box though !
  4. Gearbox 2LP - excellent. The later (1979) session has the best sound. It is possible that I might have caught the original (late Sunday night) ‘Jazz In Britain’ broadcast on Radio 3.
  5. Nice to see a happy ending for once.
  6. Seems to have been missed amongst all the Covid fallout but Mono Media also brought out a limited, signed (100 copies) volume about the life of Tubby back in March. Lots of photos of Hayes’ memorabilia and diary records etc. including input from the Hayes Estate.
  7. NY mono version The backbeat drumming on ‘Dixie Lee’ sounds so familiar, you wonder where you’ve heard it before. Then you realise it is on umpteen Motown records and who was on the Motown ‘house’ team for a time - Freddie Waits.
  8. German ECM Great memories of seeing this band in performance around the time of this release and they played some of the material - truly a group of all stars. Sadly, quite a few no longer with us (Lester, Malachi Thompson, Philip Wilson) but good that Frank Lacy, Steve Turre and others are still very much active musically.
  9. Most likely Neil Swainson - as the album was intended to feature his compositions.
  10. Spinning now. One of the thinnest slabs of vinyl I’ve ever seen, typical of US pressings in 1976 (Impulse were masters of that art). I have to say though, it sounds excellent !
  11. Some good material on this UK CBS 2LP put out by Teo and co.
  12. He was introduced from the stage, stood up and took a bow. From my recollections he was sat with a group of what looked to be ‘locals’, so probably up in Toronto for the weekend visiting friends. I need to get hold of that Label M CD !
  13. I can recommend this one - a fascinating and authoritative account of a tragic episode. Currently working my way through it.
  14. How about Ian Carr’s ‘Music Outside’? That’s an important 1970s contemporary jazz text.
  15. Funnily enough, I once saw Ray Bryant with guests sat in front of me in the audience at a Toronto Club. I think it was the ‘Top O’ The Senator’ - can’t recall who was playing.
  16. I’ve got the 24000 series 2LP of that one too and will give it a spin this weekend. Magnificent stuff - and Wilbur Harden is a good foil !
  17. Wish someone would reissue her Concord LPs on 180g audiophile - as has been done for the Neil Swainson. Such a shame that she was lost to us so young.
  18. CD box version
  19. Still got mine.
  20. It needs some tightening up and expanding out to an hour or so but there’s a potential interesting docu-drama there which the likes of BBC4 (if they actually stuck to their remit instead of the endless repeats of stuff from 5-20 years ago ad infinitum) ought to commission as an end product.
  21. It’s not pressed by German Liberty is it?
  22. Because the Germans were efficient - and pressed an initial batch of these (maybe just a very few as a demo run) before the official cancellation word came out from BN HQ across the Atlantic. That’s my theory anyway. This must also have been around the time that Francis Wolff passed on, maybe adding to the confusion.
  23. Nothing additional to what I have stated above.
