  1. The 2 tracks with Harry South Big Band are also on the 4CD South Box (the second one). Likely the same broadcast recording source.
  2. Biggest sonic upgrade ever - olive oil to de-earwax one of the ears. Quite a shocker !
  3. I’ve just added the Karousel bearing upgrade to my Linn LP12 turntable. Bang for buck, the greatest upgrade I’ve ever made and it moves my vinyl playback option up quite a few notches.
  4. Sorry to hear this - an extremely talented artist. I will spin ‘Horizons’ over the next few days. Only sorry I never got to see him play. RIP.
  5. One of the CDs I bought from an ex-BNBB member (who shall remain nameless) smelt of stale joints. In contrast, the Monk smells like an elixir.
  6. Very sad news, Brownie. She looked in good shape and spirits on that recent Miles Davis film - RIP. 93 is a very good age.
  7. There’s a mild whiff of what reminds me of wallpaper paste on the inside cover of mine. Hardly noticeable, I have to say.
  8. Still an (intriguing) mystery. For sure though, the LP is genuine (or I’ll eat my hat).
  9. Sadly with added reverb - but Mosaic sorted it out in their stellar box. I have a copy of that Sonny Lester LP too. ’Live In Munich’ was also on A&M Horizon but I’m not sure it had a UK release.
  10. “Split” I’ve always thought of them being influenced a bit by the more psychedelic acts on Motown - Undisputed Truth, Norman Whitfield era Temptations etc.
  11. Both of interest. The Matt Parker book (which I assume utilises some of his PhD work) focuses quite a bit on the Lansdowne Series so definitely of interest to me. The Harry Beckett is good too, although could have used some editing. A Barbara Thompson bio from these guys is coming out soon. Can’t keep up with them ! And that’s not even mentioning their various LPs, CDs and download action on Bandcamp.
  12. Plus there was the ‘Live In Munich’. Picked that one up much later.
  13. Interesting - I saw it advertised in the forthcoming RSD batch, along with another Hino reissue. Not my thing but good to see this stuff is at least being reissued.
  14. Just got this one through the mail. Sort of ‘James Bond meets Denis Preston’s Columbia Lansdowne series’ ! and the spy was...... Guy Warren of Ghana !
  15. Same here ! And ‘New Life’, bought around the same time, both still in my collection. Those A&M Horizons got good distribution in the UK.
  16. I think this one is a really excellent - and under-rated - Thad & Mel album. The Motown stuff on it works out pretty well I think. Surprised just how good the vinyl sounds - I think this one is a UK pressing, done by CBS. The back cover with Thad, Mel and the older guys such as Cliff Heather wearing kaftans is a bit of a ‘period piece’ though !
  17. Hitting all the bullseyes there in terms of optimal sonics - not..
  18. I don’t have the pressings readily available but the King will be smooth, low noise with very nice presentation. Maybe lacking a little presence. The Pathe Marconi will be a little on the ‘thin’ side. An original will have lots of ‘oomph’ and life, although noise might be an issue if the condition is not great (although Plastylite pressings usually are very good in this regard). My NY pressing has a blank white label on one side. They were churning them out so fast in 1964/65 that quality control took a dive ! And as usual, Londonjazzcollector has a whole treatise on it.. https://londonjazzcollector.wordpress.com/2018/02/08/lee-morgan-the-sidewinder-1964-blue-note/
  19. The old tradeoff - musical vitality vs. increased noise.
  20. There’s also the French DMM reissue if prepared to ‘rough it’. Agree with Porcy there - the King Japanese reissue is a good option.
