  1. The sonics are excellent at 45rpm - and the music is a winner too. A find ! Much more of a straight-ahead hard bop session than expected from Don Cherry.
  2. I see in the alternative universe of the Hoffmann Forum that people are currently reporting paying 60 Euro to $100 Cdn in their stores for the Evans. About 1.5 times what the stores are charging here. Outrageous ! It’s just the occasional random ‘pop’, nothing major. The Mingus was pristine though.
  3. Missed this one the first time round. A few annoying crackles, which seems to be a common complaint with this pressing/title.
  4. The predictable turmoil in Halls of Residence, not helped by ‘Freshers Week’ partying, at a lot of these ‘establishments’. They can stay in their bubbles !
  5. The ‘Redux’ 60th Anniversary 2LP edition. Looks like a Mark Wilder mastering, nice, big and crisp sound. Side 4 has alternates which I don’t think are on the ‘Mosaic Complete Columbia’. Next up - 60s Scandinavian jam featuring Don Cherry on Gearbox. 45rpm.
  6. Picked up for a fiver in mint after getting my early morning RSD batch 2 items. A gem !
  7. Yes, picked up a copy of that one too. Sounds superb - apart from some clicks on the run in on one side. Sadly, sold out now so can’t replace. Even so, wouldn’t want to be without it. In addition to fine work by Ron as usual, I really like Renee Rosnes’ playing on this performance. The live atmosphere is also captured well. In&Out tell me that they have an upcoming Ramon Valle Trio vinyl release with the same treatment and signatures, which will be tempting.
  8. A special service laid on by Impulse for this release - trash/lose/obliterate/nuke/coat in stinky wallpaper paste prior to delivery, in the unlikely event that it gets past the release stage. Jeez - I’m trying to eat my lunch..
  9. Yes, both under-rated, although Kenny Clarke and Derek Humble are missed in the lineup. Just arrived - Live from the UCL Union. Remember seeing some folk gigs there, no jazz though.
  10. The 2 tracks with Harry South Big Band are also on the 4CD South Box (the second one). Likely the same broadcast recording source.
  11. Biggest sonic upgrade ever - olive oil to de-earwax one of the ears. Quite a shocker !
  12. I’ve just added the Karousel bearing upgrade to my Linn LP12 turntable. Bang for buck, the greatest upgrade I’ve ever made and it moves my vinyl playback option up quite a few notches.
  13. Sorry to hear this - an extremely talented artist. I will spin ‘Horizons’ over the next few days. Only sorry I never got to see him play. RIP.
  14. One of the CDs I bought from an ex-BNBB member (who shall remain nameless) smelt of stale joints. In contrast, the Monk smells like an elixir.
  15. Very sad news, Brownie. She looked in good shape and spirits on that recent Miles Davis film - RIP. 93 is a very good age.
  16. There’s a mild whiff of what reminds me of wallpaper paste on the inside cover of mine. Hardly noticeable, I have to say.
  17. Still an (intriguing) mystery. For sure though, the LP is genuine (or I’ll eat my hat).
  18. Sadly with added reverb - but Mosaic sorted it out in their stellar box. I have a copy of that Sonny Lester LP too. ’Live In Munich’ was also on A&M Horizon but I’m not sure it had a UK release.
  19. “Split” I’ve always thought of them being influenced a bit by the more psychedelic acts on Motown - Undisputed Truth, Norman Whitfield era Temptations etc.
  20. Both of interest. The Matt Parker book (which I assume utilises some of his PhD work) focuses quite a bit on the Lansdowne Series so definitely of interest to me. The Harry Beckett is good too, although could have used some editing. A Barbara Thompson bio from these guys is coming out soon. Can’t keep up with them ! And that’s not even mentioning their various LPs, CDs and download action on Bandcamp.
  21. Plus there was the ‘Live In Munich’. Picked that one up much later.
  22. Interesting - I saw it advertised in the forthcoming RSD batch, along with another Hino reissue. Not my thing but good to see this stuff is at least being reissued.
