  1. I'd be pissed off either way. When the Japanese BNs hit J&R around 1979-1980 it was off to the races to snatch them up before they disappeared. Around $15 a piece IIRC back then! Quite a few were never issued stateside on LP including those Grant Greens, the Sonny Clarks, Hutch's Oblique. Mole Jazz in London had them all during that 1979-80 period as well - I remember seeing the likes of 'Pisces', the Grant Greens, 'Inner Glow', 'Oblique', 'The Collector' etc. in the racks for about £8 or £9 back then, a small fortune at the time. It is only in the last decade that I've picked up 'The Collector' on the King issue but it cost me a bit more than £8... Wish I could get on a time machine and program it for Kings Cross, 1980 !
  2. The Disco Antistat can leave a lot of gunk on the record and has a tendency to stain the outer rim of labels, in my experience. Wouldn't personally recommend.
  3. I use a VPI 16.5. Excellent piece of kit.
  4. Very sad news. Saw him a few times with Kenny Wheeler, a fine player. I have a copy of his debut Philips album (produced by Scott Walker) and will give it a spin later today. RIP.
  5. CDs 1, 2 and 4. Particularly enjoyed the Hines and the Ram Ramirez.
  6. John Taylor 'Pause and Think Again' (Turtle, Factory Sample) 'White Magic' indeed..
  7. Almost forgot that I saw him with his quartet in NYC as well - Lincoln Center (outdoor fest).
  8. Sorry to hear that, looks like a real nice dog. On the plus side, he will be at peace now.
  9. That is very true. The one time I saw him at one of those West Coast weekends he appeared in a lot of lineups, participating with great enthusiasm. Played most of the time on baritone, I recall..
  10. Remember seeing him once with that quintet with Hal Crook on trombone. Good stuff !
  11. No manic car park clappers then?
  12. Attention JLH! I think I remember seeing the LP of that one in Sam The Record Man, Toronto. Didn't buy it, sadly..
  13. I picked a bundle of them up on LP some years ago John - and also some of those 'Gold' series releases - part of a nice old collection. When the Xanadus came out I recall it being a very lean time in general for straight jazz. Other than Jazz Journal doing reviews of them, they pretty much slipped under the radar. Mole Jazz had 'em, of course. I got several, but the only ones I kept were the Teddy Edwards and the first Ronnie Cuber. The rest were too much like jazz for me. MG Yes - I remember seeing them in the racks at Mole. Not cheap either at the time I recall - £5 or £6 a shot.

  15. Have a great birthday Dan !
  16. All the best !
  17. Wish they would drop the price of the Dexter !
  18. Clifford Jarvis was one underrated drummer. Lived in London for many years and passed away over here I think. Have come across musicians who used to jam with him. He was pretty low key in his years here.
  19. Yep, all those 'Books' are great.
  20. I think you'll find that was dug for Georgie Porgie's Northern Powerhouse idea. Expect it to be filled in before the triumphalist Autumn Conference. Location for Jezza's victory ceremony?
  21. Booker Ervin 'The Blues Book' (Transatlantic)
  22. Another very early West Coast intro for me were those Wardell Gray tracks with Sonny Criss and Teddy Charles. Interesting to compare those with Prince Lasha/Sonny Simmons 'Firebirds'.
