    Ran Blake

    Amen to that !
  2. The Biscoe band tribute to Mingus with Henry Lowther and Kate Williams is good. Caught them last month at Swanage, one of the best performances at that festival IMO.
  3. Happy Birthday !
  4. Happy Birthday !
  5. That is true - I don't think there was much input of that sort. His sessions have a very recognisable 'feel' though which permeates through the Derams and Turtles. Quite different to the various Fontanas of that era, for example.
  6. All of those available at FOPP for £3 each, for anyone in London..
  7. I picked this one up not knowing what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. Recommended, for anyone curious !
  8. As Daniel pointed out, Glenn Miller Cafe is recommended. Bijou but great fun !
  9. Peter Eden for late 60s/ early 70s British jazz. Those sessions seem to capture a unique period atmosphere.
  10. Noticed in London this week that Ray's Jazz had most of these issues in stock - £11, suposedly on 'special' (not sure if that counts as a good price).
  11. I'll stick with my old Savoy 5LP set and probably get hold of the Mosaic Dial.
  12. Clifford Brown 'The Beginning and the End' (French CBS)
  13. Yeah - the gig at Bath was particularly memorable. I got to see him put away his assorted instruments, signed my Mosaic booklet and a few LPs and reminisced a bit about the Blue Note recordings and his favourite LP cover design ('A New Conception'). That was an evening and a half..
  14. For me it's a real nice memento of Sam's last UK tour with an orchestra plus his own rhythm section, done back in 2007 I think. Quite a few of the arrangements are familiar !
  15. Congrats to whoever got it - great set !
  16. Glad I picked it up. Full of fine music and generous playing time. The booklet is very well done too.
  17. Pretty sure I've got a copy of the complete film of that Don Byas somewhere. I remember Stan Tracey's comments that he was one of the most unpleasant/difficult musicians he ever had to accompany (Lucky Thompson being another).
  18. Nice one - never seen that picture before but often checked out that view from there. There's an iron age hill fort (Bratton Castle) at that spot and the village of Eddington just below (plus a cement works creating smoke in place of the train)
  19. I have all the volumes of that one as well - time to dig it out.

    Martin Banks

Also on Harold Land 'Take Aim' and RRK 'Slightly Latin'. Martin Banks fan here ! Reminds me a bit of Richard Williams, who also never got the kudos merited.
  21. I got a similar email a few weeks ago.
  22. Lovely album, that 'Long Green'. I bought that Savoy reissue when it first came out and still have it. Time for an 'airing'. 'Lee Morgan' (BN UA 2LP) - the 'Capra Black' session.
  23. Happy Birthday Shawn !
