  1. The place sort of reminded me of that Gringotts Bank in Harry Potter !
  2. Yep, I remember the Kafka-esque queuing and paying system at the old Foyles. Which is by I used to buy most of my books at Dillons (now another branch of Waterstones). I remember that archaic elevator too !
  3. Not to forget that the remnants of Asmans, after it closed, occupied the upstairs at Mole in later years. Saturday afternoons seemed to have (at least when I was there) a regular vintage jazz listening/critique session on the upstairs deck courtesy of 'mouldy figge' regulars. The last time I was there though the Asmans desk was bare and the record deck was bust. Also not forgetting 'All Change Records', next door to Sherlock Holmes's place on Baker St. They sort of morphed into Mole around 1978... There was also that interesting avant-garde jazz shop near Neal St (pretty sure JohnS posted about this a while back), which didn't seem to last that long. Last time I passed the spot where I think it was located it looked to be a top end hairdressing salon. The Camden Town store was my favourite - absolutely packed with good stuff. Jazz & reggae was their thing.
  4. Sad news. Remember seeing her in the Sly Stone lineup at The Hague about 10 years ago. RIP.
  5. I sort of vaguely recognise that picture of the 'later' Dobells but must only have ever gone in there once or twice and never bought anything. Having said that I have a fair number of LPs with Dobells stickers still on them. Mole was more my place, specially as being a student at the establishment in Bloomsbury I could sneak up there for a shuffle in the racks between lectures.
  6. Even Tracey Emin gets mention !
  7. That place is nuts !
  8. Those Jazz Alley dates look very interesting. Henry Franklin on bass as well - wow.
  9. We need a Mole Jazz tribute site to round it off !
  10. I'm a hopelessly optimistic ex-Edmontonian.... No probs !
  11. I've still got a few bought at the Lakeshore Boulevard West store. ECMs ! Q - Where do old ECM LPs go to die? A - Canada. I'm buying more CDs than vinyl these days. Not very often I come across anything on vinyl that is reasonably priced and not trashed, to be honest.
  12. Damn it John - you got my preference ! Edmonton 70 please !
  13. And maybe some geese as guard-dogs !
  14. Great sound as would be expected - and no doubt better than the Prestige.
  15. MJQ 'Under The Jasmin Tree' (Australian World Record Club, stereo) Lalo Schifrin 'Sade' (ditto)
  16. I think I have much of this one on 1980s Japanese vinyl - will have to check.
  17. Woods/Byrd 'The Young Bloods' (Esquire). Great rhythm section of Al Haig, Teddy Kotick and Charlie Persip on this one, something for a 'comeback' for Haig back at the time of issue.
  18. The 2CD set is certainly addictive, that's for sure. One thing that comes across strongly is just how good the performances of both Kate and Mike are on this one, even by their own usual high standards. Thanks for the fast turnaround with the mailouts Chris !
  19. It's when you see threads like this one that you realise the Mosaic Select series will be really missed after they all finally sell out..
  20. Steve Lacy Lacey Gibson Le Son 'Y Ra
  21. No problem with space for CDs and LPs. Congrats !
  22. NY USA mono, ear. Liberty, stereo Uncanny !
  23. Anyone else got their copy of 'A Bigger Show' 2CD set yet? Fine stuff - and very nicely captured in live sound by Jon Hiseman and Miles Ashton. In fact I would go as far as to say that this is my favourite Westbrook recording of recent years. One of my albums of the year, for sure ! I hope to capture their performance coming up in Taunton early next year (postponed from this year) and with a bit of luck I'll catch the Barnfield Xmas show.
