  1. See the link in the first post of this thread. Odd comment at the end about the problem being that opera is not taught in schools. Was it ever taught in schools? Certainly not in the state sector. I remember doing 'Dido and Aeneas' as a set score for Music O Level as such an establishment. Eons ago though...
  2. Have a good one !
  3. 'Grand Marnier Hidden Charm Bar' vs Ringwood Ales Cask Selection
  4. All being well it should come up on 'running low' when the time comes but - don't quote me on that !
  5. If nothing else, for a multi-set order it means I effectively get free or near-free international shipping when one of these deals comes along and then its just a case of selecting from the Mosaic wishlist. Sounds good to me ! The Jamal is now 5-6 years in and must be coming up to end of licence so that got priority. As for the Shaw, I'm with Rooster.
  6. Ha ! I can recall regular 'sonic battles' between the basement blues/folk section and the upstairs jazz at Shaftesbury Avenue. That hollering stuff got very annoying when Miles's quintet etc. were playing in the background.
  7. From the sale, I've opted for the Ahmad Jamal and the Woody Shaw.
  8. I remember it being stacked to the gunnels with import avant-garde stuff in particular. Alas, not into that stuff at the time. It would be totally inconceivable for such a shop to occupy those premises in that prime location today !
  9. Another belated Happy Birthday !
  10. Every time I see those brown covers I start thinking about bean-bags and lava lamps..
  11. Obscure but not forgotten over here. And a short tribute to him ('Abena') played by Matthew Bourne kicked off the big Jazz Britannia concert back in 2005 (most fitting). It was in the Thames Estuary near Southend that he drowned I think.
  12. Bought a Mosaic set on my last visit to Ray's so I guess I did quite well !
  13. Entry to Shag? Jazz audience is shagged out!
  14. Dizzy Reece 'Star Bright' (Music Matters 2x45rpm stereo)
  15. Haven't been into the new place yet but on the cartoon boarding outside the place during the recent conversion work there was a whole feature on Ray's so I guess it is still part of their DNA. Long may it stay that way (hopefully)..
  16. Not just a Bay Area phenomenon. That's just what I find. The typical jazz fan at gigs in my experience is white, male, retired and middle class (has leisure time and adequate pension to fill it). A visit to the Swanage Festival in July pretty well confirms your theory 100% (with wives). It would be interesting to see what the demographic is at that 'Love Supreme' festival down in Brighton.
  17. Andrew Hill 'One For One' (Blue Note Reissue series 2LP)
  18. Viagra in my case.. I guess my google profile must be 'debauched super-annuated boomer hep-cat'. It is true. The last few gigs I've been to I would say that there have been maybe 2 or 3 people younger than me. And I'm no spring chicken..
  19. Arthur Ransome Art Pepper Ms Pepper
  20. Sound's like that guy who used to do the rounds of Mole Jazz and Ray's. A legendary figure.
  21. Eddie Stobart Eddie George Eddie The Eagle
  22. Damn, I visited Stockholm and never got chance to see this place. Got to get back !
  23. The best time for these Western Canada festivals (Van, Edmonton, Calgary) was probably back in the 1990s when you could see groups like Jane Bunnett's for around $10-15, which made it no problem to splash out for 5-6 of these gigs. Heck, even Diana Krall was about $6-7 back then ! Jackie McLean I remember paying about $15-18 for and it was by no means over-subscribed. Much pricier now - but there again so are the festivals over here (London, Cheltenham etc) and I guess we are all now living in a much more expensive World. Having said that, the lineup for this Vancouver festival is quite impressive. A good mix to keep both the musos and the more casual listeners on both ends of the spectrum happy.
  24. Very interesting ! Imagine working as an electrical engineer/'resident genius' in the tech department at that place. You'd never get any work done..
